Directed by Scott Derrickson.
In this blend of psychological thriller and courtroom drama, Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) is a 19-year-old college student who begins displaying bizarre and troubling behavior; as her actions become increasingly destructive and shocking, Emily begins speaking in strange tongues and destroys religious symbols that surround her. Emily's parents believe that their daughter has become possessed of the devil, and the Catholic Church agrees to authorize an exorcism of the young woman. As Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson) attempts to drive the demons from Emily's body, the girl dies in the midst of the taxing ceremonies, and Father Moore finds himself charged with negligent homicide. Attorney Erin Brunner (Laura Linney) is hired to represent Father Moore against prosecutor Ethan Thomas (Campbell Scott), who intends to prove there were concrete medical explanations for Emily's behaviors, including epilepsy and schizophrenia, all leading to a heated courtroom debate between the notions of faith and science. The Exorcism of Emily Rose was inspired by the real-life story of Annaliese Michel, a young woman from Germany who died in 1976 after priests in Wurzburg spent eight months attempting to exorcise demons from her body. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"By Tricia Olszewski The dilapidated, middle-of-nowhere house is there. So are the single woman’s apartment and the deserted dorm hallway, both so still as night crawls toward morning. But the majority of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, based on the true story of a young German woman’s alleged demonic possession in the ’70s, takes place in the most unexpected of locations: a courtroom. No, writer-director Scott Derrickson’s portrayal of Anneliese Michel’s experience isn’t as balls-out horror-ific as its trailers suggest. But moviegoers hungry for a good fright might be satisfied anyway. Combining the most chilling elements of its famous cousin, The Exorcist, with the supernatural-tinged drama of another misleadingly marketed but much milder thriller, The Skeleton Key, Emily Rose will not only provide fuel for a postfilm debate on the finer points of evil-spirit-related jurisprudence but also give you a bad case of the 3 a.m. willies. (For those who ... " [More]

"I think that religeous themes just make for good Horror Movies! You can see this in everything from "The Omen" to "The Exorcist" to "Rosemary's Baby" to "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose" to almost EVERY 'Vampire' movie ever made... " [More]

"I enjoyed "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose" a great deal... (but then, as I've stated earlier, I never met a Horror Movie I didn't like!) ... Yes, I can see where most people would find the courtroom scenes a bit tedious, but I enjoyed that part as well... I think it boils down to, how can you prove, in a court of law, that demonic posession is real? No easy trick, that! Also, I heard or read in an interview somewhere that the young girl who played 'Emily' insisted on doing most, if not all, of her 'body contortions' herself... without any assistance from 'special FX'! The climactic scene in the barn was quite good! I think the idea of this movie was to make people ask themselves, "COULD it be real?" " [More]

"Actually I'm called Divine for a totally other matter, but we won't discuss that here...hee hee...ANYHOOOOO, Actually I used to sing Professional Opera and one of the guys in the chorus started calling me Divine Ms. Junebug, then everyone else started calling me that. It was not because I was ever a DIVA, I am extremely humble, I think it was because I really liked Bette Midler at the time, she calls herself the Divine Ms. M - a little history about me. Now I just sing Jazz and watch scary movies...You know, Ghost hunting is a LOT of fun. BUT I would never go anywhere by myself. I am not that brave. BUT I am more afraid of the living than the dead. There are a lot of psycho people out there. But it's really fun with a group of people, and you usually walk in pairs around old houses or grounds, etc. BUT like I said if I really did see something, I would probably faint. ha ha. I'm very interested about ANYTHING paranormal. I watch anything and everything on ... " [More]

"That's why we call her the Divine Ms. Junebug.Anyway, I was going to mention The Excorcism of Emily Rose. It was advertised a couple of years ago as... *grabs DVD box * ..."Based on a true story." That's what the DVD box says. *Puts DVD away*Naturally, I'm skeptical about this claim. The movie is fiction and we all know that.Fortunately, the DVD (which is a really nice DVD, by the way) has a featurette about that claim. They mention that it's based on an actual trial, but the fictional stuff has been... fictionalized. So in essense, it really is BASED on a true story.Great movie, though, for anybody who's never seen it.And Dr. Gor -- You've never seen Identity? BLASPHEMY! Interesting thing about Identity is that it was directed by the same guy who directed Girl, Interrupted and written by the guy who wrote Jack Frost (not Michael Keaton's excuse for a career reboot, the horror flick). "What struck me about this film was the interesting debate between theological speculation and scientific reasoning. Was Emily Rose's death caused by a evil spirit or was it murder? Laura Linney and Oscar Nominee Tom Wilkinson give strong performances in this very intriguing motion picture. Director Scott Derrickson does a great job of trying to keep our interest by giving both side of the arguement without trying to insult our inteligence with a ridiculous and predictable storyline. A more inexperienced director would have tried to shock us with blood and gore, turning it into a forgetable "B" movie. By not taking the low road, this film actually becomes rather entertaining and spiritual. Don't let the title fool you. Give this movie a chance. You might like it, as I did! " [More]

"I was very disappointed with this movie. Emily Rose is a good Christian girl suddenly possessed after entering college. She comes home and her family tries to have a priest exorcise the demon from her body with fatal results. The priest on trial for her death slowly lets the story out to an agnostic lawyer defending him in court.I watched this film because it was featured on Bravo's Scary Moments update. Jennifer Carpenter was praised highly for her performance and for not using a prop or double-acting the part of Emily's deleriums, contortions, etc. I tried and just couldn't care about any of the characters or the story. The movie seemed to drag on and on. " [More]

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is the sort of movie where the fundamentals of jurisprudence get jumbled up for cheesily dramatic effect; where tight-lipped collegiate boyfriends suddenly unleash bathetic romantic monologues; where priests and rural housewives ooze manufactured dignity; and where a brassy career women is forced to learn Important life lessons by mysterious forces beyond her control. In short, it's a lot like a David E. Kelley television drama, only padded out to two hours and projected on a 50-foot screen. Because the aforementioned career woman is portrayed by the reliable Laura Linney, The Exorcism of Emily Rose proves far more watchable than it should. Casually steely one moment and full of self-doubt the next, Linney invests her post-feminist archetype with more humanity than she deserves. Yet Linney's performance is in service of such a hokey Big Idea that it's almost painful to watch her struggle against the script. The only aspect of this absurd concoction that deserves any real praise is the demonic-possession back story. The Exorcist is such a pop-culture touchstone that the filmmakers deserve some respect merely for avoiding most of its many clichés. As the titular victim, relative newcomer Jennifer Carpenter doesn't so much erase the memory of Linda Blair as sidestep it completely, portraying her affliction like a cross between epilepsy, schizophrenia, and an eating disorder. Too bad Carpenter contorts her body so convincingly in the service of such a fourth-rate script. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
