Directed by Chris Buck, Ash Brannon.
A surfing penguin currently riding the wave of success enters his first professional competition in a computer animated family-oriented comedy from directors Chris Buck and Ash Brannon. Cody Maverick (Shia LeBeouf) may be a relative amateur when it comes to hanging ten, but he's sure he has what it takes to surf his way to superstardom. With a little help from his cantankerous King Penguin mentor, ex-surfing legend Big Z (Jeff Bridges), and a little encouragement from star Pen Gu Island lifeguard Lani (Zooey Deschanel), there may be hope for this tuxedo-clad wave twister after all. James Woods, Jane Krakowski, Michael McKean, Jon Heder, Mario Cantone, and Brian Benben all lend their voices to this inspirational tale that proves anything is possible when you put your heart and mind to it. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Until last year’s brilliantly directed Ratatouille, all of Pixar’s animated features could be summed up with one word (toys, bugs, monsters, fish, superheroes, cars). Then the more complex plot synopsis of “rat functions as a culinary Cyrano in a French restaurant’s kitchen” came along and ruined the studio’s tradition of simplistic scenarios. Fortunately, this year Pixar is back on track with Wall-E, a movie that can be summed up as being about, in a word, robots. But in their pipeline they’ve got a couple sequels (Cars 2, Toy Story 3) and a couple multi-word synopses (2009’s Up and 2011’s The Bear and the Bow are, at the least, each described with two words: old man and fairy tale, respectively. Only 2011’s Newt could have been pitched using a single word: newts. So, while Pixar seems like it currently has enough on their hands, I’d like to suggest a few more single-word pitches for animated films in order to get things back to basics: Birds - They’ve given us a movie featuring ... "Pixar's latest Oscar contender, Ratatouille, is an interesting story of a rat who wants to be a chef, a man who can't cook and how they become a team. The animation and voice work are, of course, top notch. The characters and voice acting are also well done. However, I felt that the movie lagged a bit in the middle. And I just wasn't that into it. Maybe I'm prejudiced against rats.Surf's Up, another Oscar nominated animated film, this time from Sony, follows a penguin who longs to be a great surfer. The film is set up like a documentary, with the film crew interviewing friends, family and rivals of the main character, Cody. I really enjoyed this device, something I don't think I've seen in an animated film before. There were many parts where I laughed out loud, especially at the young penguins. But I didn't really feel the connection between Cody and his idol. Cool animation, though.La Vie En Rose is a biography of sorts of French singer Edith Piaf. ... " [More]

"Even though the writers have apparently settled on a deal to end the strike, there is still a great deal to fear on the Oscar broadcast set for Feb. 24, that can be summed up in three simple words (two if you hyphenate correctly):Oscar-winner 'Norbit'.That's right. While many wrestle with the fact that their favorite films have been left off the nominee list (I understand, though don't agree with, the love-fest called Juno, but even my friends who are the most ardent supporters of the film agree that it has no place in the Best Picture and Best Director category) a film that was universally loathed like 'Norbit' has a shot at earning the most coveted trophies in the biz. Here to give you an edge on the office ballots, I have opted to fill this column with a handy guide to this year's nominees, chock-full of winner predictions. "I'm getting tired of the over saturation of Penguin films. I'm also getting tired of CGI films with no story at all (it's what separates the mindless animation from the flawless creations of Pixar). I was not interested in seeing this film at all, but decided to check it out because it was free. I was completely blown away. The whole film is surfing mockumentary. Made to look like it was shot hand-held, with narration, interviews, and perfect surfing photography. If you are a fan of films like Riding Giants, Billabong Odyssey or Endless Summer you are going to dig this film. It has a fantastic voice cast, and it is very funny. Props to Sony for green lighting this one. I really can't believe how good this film is. " [More]

"First they marched, then they danced, & now they surf! In the latest film to feature penguins as its stars 'Surf's Up' takes us on a fun and wild ride alongside the headstrong teen Cody Maverick, voiced by Shia LaBeouf. Don't let the fact that this is yet another movie with the flightless birds deter you from giving it a chance. Where as 'Happy Feet' relied on song and dance to carry itself, 'Surf's Up' focuses more so on story and laughs while it makes a huge splash in the vast ocean of recent CGI family flicks.Everything begins with an interview with Cody in his hometown of Shiverpool, Antarctica. For the next hour and twenty-five minutes the same camera filming him in the interview will follow him on his journey to and on Pen Gu Island for the tenth annual Big Z Memorial Surf Off. For those of you not familiar with penguin culture, it's a surfing competition held in the honor of legendary pro surfer, Big Z. By winning the surf of ... " [More]

"Surf’s Up is a documentary styled, animated, children’s story about penguins in the jungle who surf. A little difficult to put my finger on why, but this animated tryst kind of works. Unusually small penguin Cody Maverick (Shia LaBeouf) surfs the wake of a giant whale to the Big Z surfing competition with the dream of being a world class surfer. On the whale he meets Chicken Joe (Jon Heder) and they become fast friends. Chicken Joe and Cody Maverick get separated and each of them have their own small adventure. There is a small group of young penguins that comment on different aspects of the plot. The movie is animated documentary style and it gives it distinction from other animated movies. I admit it, I was a sucker for the little penguins. They are pretty freaking cute. Their contribution was just to be gosh darned adorable and they were! I don’t care if it was a cheap attempt at “aaah” but I don’t care, they got me! This isn&rsq ... " [More]

All penguined out after the 1-2 punch of March of the Penguins and Happy Feet? Well, save room for one more. Despite potentially seeming like a crass grab at the tuxedoed coattails of these other penguin movies, Surf's Up is a funny, warm, and highly enjoyable salute to the ever-cinematic sport of surfing. It also happens to be the world's first feature-length animated mockumentary. Surf's Up expands on the logic of the outtakes included in the closing credits of Pixar films -- outtakes designed purely to break the fourth wall, since cartoons aren't actually capable of flubbing their lines. An animated documentary has the same effect of making its universe "really real," which allows viewers to effortlessly embrace the characters and the scenarios. (Plus, it's funny to watch interviewed penguins banter with the boom operator). The imaginary hubs of wave-riding activity featured here, from the jutting ice floes of Antarctica to the gnarled rocks of Pen Gu Island, are glorious and inspired. But the true inspiration comes in the vocal casting. Surf's Up opts for a refreshing slate of animation newcomers, including Shia LaBeouf displaying his usual charming pluck, Zooey Deschanel easily transplanting her wry sarcasm, Jeff Bridges excelling as the superficially cranky mentor, and Jon Heder as a stoner-like chicken named Joe. Co-director Chris Buck also helmed Disney's Tony Hawk-influenced Tarzan, and those extreme sports sensibilities seem to further benefit him here. Did Surf's Up have to be about penguins? Maybe not, but a wintry bird excelling at a summer pastime just adds to the underdog quality that makes films like this click. Add in the fact that it doubles as a lampoon of/homage to the great surfing documentaries, such as The Endless Summer and Riding Giants, and surf junkies should be just as geeked for it as their kids. ~ All Movie Guide
