Directed by Chris Columbus.
This film adaptation of the Broadway musical based loosely on Puccini's opera La Bohème features many members of the original cast. It follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger (Adam Pascal), Mimi (Rosario Dawson), Tom (Jesse L. Martin), and Angel (Wilson Jermaine Heredia); Maureen (Idina Menzel) deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne (Tracie Thoms), wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benjamin (Taye Diggs) has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark (Anthony Rapp), an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

"Let me come right out and say it: I am a 23 year old man who owns this movie on DVD and I am not afraid to say it. Some may call this movie a "guilty pleasure" film--I however, prefer to call it a damn fine movie.Adventures in Babysitting is a roller-coaster ride from start to finish and the more ridiculous and campy it gets, the better the movie becomes. What is amazing about this movie is that, despite the rather zany storylines, nothing ever becomes so overly convoluted that you can no longer take the film seriously. Adventures in Babysitting walks a fine line that screams, "we didn't take ourselves to seriously" while also clearly stating "we still think we made one hell of a movie."Elisabeth Shue is fantastic as "Chris Parker" the babysitter who gets herself into a night she is not soon to forget. Also, who couldn't love the craziness of a young Anthony Rapp playing Brads best friend. Oh yeah, thats right, the lead from the ... " [More]

"An inspirational movie about what people with AIDs go through. I liked that Roger went through emotional problems, it made the movie seem more mature. The songs were inspiring, and truthful. The movie could have used more dancing, being a musical. The Tango Maureen was absolutely amazing though. Funny, but full of talent.Rent was a great movie. Inspirational, funny, romantic. The best of all worlds. " [More]

"The addition of our talented new member nathan503 got me to thinking about representations of queer musicians and how they are portrayed and/or their music is used in film. For me, at least what is coming to mind at this moment, are the glam rockers; specifically Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine and John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Both films are written and directed by gay men about queer musicians and miraculously succeed at telling poignant, engaging stories that don't fall victim to the abundance of stereotypical cliches that so many others do.Within recent years, a number of films have begun to delve into the lives of rather famous musicians of the past whose queer sensibilities have only recently come to light. Irwin Winkler's De-Lovely which chronicles the life of Cole Porter, and Atom Egoyan's Where The Truth Lies. Unfortunately, due to the (homophobic) powers that be, the films tended to skim the surface of this aspect of their lives and ul ... " [More]

"RENT **1/2rated PG-13 (for mature thematic material involving drugs and sexuality, and for some strong language.)2 hrs. 15 min.story, music & lyrics by Jonathan Larsonscreenplay by Steve Chboskyproduced by Jeffrey Seller, Kevin McCollum, & Allan S. Gordondirected by Chris ColumbusWhen a stage musical is touted as a "revolutionary rock opera" I start to feel a lil suspect. I mean, the only rock operas I'm care about are the Who's "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia." I remember getting so sick of hearing the ads on the radio for this musical when it was making it's theatrical rounds. Maybe it's cuz I know how hype can be and how overexposed some forms of entertainment can get. Maybe it was cuz radio stations just play the same ads over and over. Regardless, I never saw the musical Rent on stage and now that I've seen the movie version, I wish I had. Based on Puccini's La Boheme, tells the story of one year in the life of friends living the Bohemian life ... " [More]

"Here are the undeniable truths of life, as they relate to the film version of RENT: 1. The story has not aged well. And no, little RENTies, this does not mean we've cured AIDS and ridden ourselves of poverty in 2006. 2. Spoken dialogue lifted directly from song lyrics is, to the ear, like a 2nd grader's haiku assignment and should be avoided at all costs. 3. Rosario Dawson, not trained as a singer, should never have been allowed to attempt one of the most vocally challenging roles in modern Broadway history. 4. All emotional, social, and political impact was surgically removed from RENT prior to filming. 5. In film, we get to go places and do things, of which a platonic, arm-swinging jaunt through Central Park in our spring finery does NOT count. 6. We can portray orgies on screen (EYES WIDE SHUT, THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE) as long as they're either a. predominately lesbian in nature, or b. a piece of artwork that magically comes to life. If it's AIDS-related dementi ... " [More]
