Directed by Terry Gilliam.
Following the death of her drug-addicted mother, a whimsical young girl follows her chemically dependent father to a remote prairie house to discover a wondrous world of magical fireflies and nocturnal bog men in this hallucinatory childhood fantasy from visionary filmmaker Terry Gilliam. Noah (Jeff Bridges) is a burnt-out rock star whose post-superstar voyage to obscurity is hastened by a serious drug addiction that is also shared with his wild-eyed wife (Jennifer Tilly). When the Noah's increasingly erratic wife suffers a fatal overdose, the faded rock star opts to escape the painful reality by retreating to a ramshackle remote home with his young daughter, Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland). Left to her own devices as her father stumbles about the grasslands in a drug-induced haze, Jeliza-Rose soon ventures into her own fantasy land before making the acquaintance of mentally challenged youth Dickens (Brendan Fletcher). As the two become fast friends and Jeliza-Rose joins the swimsuit-clad Dickens in defeating the menacing shark that traverses the nearby railways, the pair are watched over by Dickens' black-clad sister, Dell (Janet McTeer), who acts as Dickens' guardian and whose overly enthusiastic interest in the art of taxidermy borders on obsessive. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"This will probably be a rant. The DVD of Tideland starts with an introduction by director Terry Gilliam ("The Brothers Grimm") where he tells us that many of us will not like the film and many of us will not understand it. And then he says that some will love it. Also, it seems that Gilliam has a small girl inside him. I don't know that that's really a surprise. But, by starting out with the negative, I got the feeling that he was saying that this was a mess of a film and his intro was just a ploy to stem criticism by implying that the audience who did not enjoy the film just wasn't smart enough to understand his vision. Well, f you, Mr. Gilliam. I don't want my films to come with an explanation or an apology. And I don't like my intelligence to be insulted before I even get a chance to delve into the movie. So the whole 122 minutes, I had the taint of this intro in my mind and I got angrier and angrier as this mess of a movie played out. The story, and ... " [More]

"I have loved Terry Gilliam ever since I saw Time Bandits when i was like 14. My automatic response whenever anyone asks that "Who is your favorite director?" question is always the same, Terry Gilliam. It is quite safe to say that he is one of the most original directors of the last 20 years. If Tideland is any indication of the direction he is currently going though, I'm afraid we may have lost him. I love weird. I love weird. Tideland is something beyond weird. Maybe I'll come back to that thought. I think the one thing that is most impressive about Gilliam's style is his constant ability to get completely unique performances out of his actors. He does it every time. If you think about Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys, Heath Ledger in The Brothers Grimm, Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro in Fear and Loathing, and EVERYONE in The Fisher King, they are all completely unlike anything else you've ever seen from them. The performances in Tideland are top-notch. It is pure ... " [More]

"This is not for your average movie-goer, which anyone who has seen the directors other works probably knows already. I hope you'll give it a try. Terry Gilliam really one-upped himself with this one. I am also a fan of his other work Brazil, Fear and Loathing, 12 Monkeys, but this movie tops them all. The cinematography is the best i've seen in recent years, A lot of it is shot at a child's perspective which adds to the eerie and other-worldly atmosphere of the movie. From the first scene you get the feeling that things will only get worse for the movie's little main character. Throughout the movie you (along with the main character) will go through long periods of being submersed in insanity, only to be shocked to the surface with brief moments of sharp clarity. Once the movie is complete and the credits start rolling you've still got a good 20-30 minutes to try to sort out the odd spectacle you've just witnessed, " [More]

"1. Joel and Ethan Coen 2. Jim Jarmusch 3. Hal Hartley 4. Tsai Ming-Liang 5. Terry Gilliam Gilliam was actually hard to say because I haven't seen several of his movies. Anyone seen Tideland yet? Werner Herzog is another one I thought of as well, but there are so many of his movies I haven't seen either. I also thought about Terry Zwigoff, but still haven't seen Art School Confidential yet either. And I almost wanted to say Aki Kaurismäki just based on The Man Without a Past. I haven't seen a single one of his other movies because they all seem to difficult to be able to find, but if most of them rival this film, he'd definitely be up there. Paul, this is a really cool list! I'm surprised someone else listed Tsai Ming-Liang. Badlands is one of my aboslute most favorite films. And Days of Heaven is extremely good. I just saw The Thin Red Line for the second time recently and didn't find it as good as I had remembered it. Mallick is such a mysterious figure. Have you seen ... " [More]
