You can take the clerks out of the Quick Stop, but you just can't take the Quick Stop out of the clerks as Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randall (Jeff Anderson) prove in this long-awaited sequel to Kevin Smith's breakthrough comedy. Years after we last saw them, Dante is still toiling behind the counter at a New Jersey convenience store and Randall is still annoying customers at the video shop next door -- or at least they are until a fire burns down the strip mall, forcing Dante and Randall to look for work. Times are tough, and the guys find themselves embracing the ultimate indignity as they take jobs at Mooby's, a fast-food outlet where the burgers are advertised as "udderly delicious." While Randall's snarky attitude toward the public remains unchanged, Dante is trying to make the best of the situation as he plans to marry his fiancée, Emma (Jennifer Schwalbach Smith), and move to Florida. However, Dante's plans are complicated when he falls for Becky (Rosario Dawson), a funny and tart-tongued woman who happens to be his boss at Mooby's. Lurking about in the background, as always, are Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith), who for good or ill have changed even less with the passage of time than Dante and Randall. Clerks II also features Wanda Sykes, Ethan Suplee, and Trevor Fehrman, with cameo appearances from Kevin Smith regulars Ben Affleck and Jason Lee. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Thank God Kevin Smith came to his senses and gave us Clerks II, the brilliant return to the View Askinewiverse after the cowardly sellout Jersey Girl. The movie is slightly better than the original, and stands firmly with Smiths masterpieces Mallrats and Chasing Amy. The film does what a sequel should do- it continues the story without repeating. The memories of Clerks, one of the most influential films of the 90s are with the audience at all times during the picture, and Smith shows us what would happen to his now legendary characters if time had passed. Its like fictional comedy version of Michael Apteds Up films. Like the first film, Clerks II chronicles a single day in the lives of Dante (Brian OHalloran) and Randall (Jeff Anderson) as they work a piece of shit job. The convenience store they worked at in the first film has burned down, so their lot is even worse- they work at a McDonalds-like fast food restaurant. There social lives have not improved much either, both still li ... " [More]

"Dante doesn't deserve such a great name, but Randall is the coolest uncool guy ever. Jay and Silent Bob are of course as hot as ever, and I can't wait to see what Kevin Smith comes up with next. I love how he can just through shit together and turn it into a masterpiece. " [More]

"More confessions: I am also a Kevin Smith fan. Not a big one. I own the original five View Askiewniverse films. Some are better than others. I tend to rate them, my favorite to least favorite, in this order: Dogma, the original Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Mallrats, Chasing Amy. Say what you want about Jay and Bob Strike Back, but I thought it was a fitting end (or what I thought was the end) of this odd assortment of films, which celebrate male insecurities, fanboyism, and vulgarity in ways that should not appeal to me, yet they do. Some of the films broached complicated subjects (faith in Dogma, love and sex in Chasing Amy), while others were pure joyrides of testosterone (Jay and Bob). Yet, what charms me, a female, about Kevin Smith and his unique sense of humor is the balance he strikes between the vulgar and mundane with the intelligent, witty, astute, and even tender or sentimental. Jay and Bob are comic relief, but they have heart, can be gentle, and are ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Maybe, in the 12 years since Kevin Smith’s Clerks came out, we as viewers have become more accustomed to seeing the film’s distinguishing characteristics combined onscreen: pop-culture obsessions, filthy words, and even filthier scenarios. Smith, naturally, became his own imitator, continuing to examine his fixations in his subsequent movies. But even television has done them, in series such as Strangers With Candy, Crank Yankers, and the always-topical, always-raunchy South Park. If we aren’t suitably and giddily shocked by the films and shows that seem to exist solely for this purpose, it’s not our fault, is it? Maybe it’s the culture’s fault. It couldn’t possibly be Smith’s—right? Not the guy who’s the hero of potty-mouthed, life-beaten geeks everywhere. But how about the guy who allowed the long-announced Clerks II to be publicized with a poster that features Rosario Dawson placed saucily front an ... " [More]

"Let's hope there's no truth that old "these things come in threes" adage. Exactly a week ago, I rounded up reactions to the death of film critic Anderson Jones; today, I'm collecting responses to the death of film critic Joel Siegel. Siegel, who had been the house critic for ABC's Good Morning America for the past 25 years, succumbed to colon cancer on Friday. He is remembered vividly by former college roommate Harry Shearer at the Huffington Post, who offers a few anecdotes in tribute to "the Joel Siegel that I knew: the pre-moustache Joel." Siegel's fellow cancer sufferer Roger Ebert quotes from an email in which Siegel admitted to actually appearing on camera with "a pouch in my right hand pumping chemo into a port in my chest." Ebert also quotes Siegel's wife, Ena Swansea who says her husband was "so sad that true film criticism was being replaced by 'entertainment news,' when they only get interviews if their review is laudatory, or they don't review at all.” Speaking of t ... "Amen on your comments on Batman Begins Mattypro. Nolan handles the material perfectly, balancing some dark realism with comic book thrills. It's a Batman movie all us Batman fans hoped would be made. And what else can be said about Christian Bale as Batman - home run. Have you seen the much overpraise Tim Burton version recently. I thought it was it was a mess the first time I saw it, and it just gets sillier with every viewing. It's Batman, not Joker. 1. Clerks 2. Given that I hadn't liked a Kevin Smith movie since Mallrats, I was blown away by how funny and affecting this movie is. Recasting these two unknown actors, ten years later, shouldn't work - but it does. 2. Waking Ned Devine. The only movie in which the combination of a quaint Irish village and cute old people doesn't make me want to claw my eyes out. 3. The Rock. Three things that are 9 times out 10 horrible. Michael Bay movies, Nick Cage movies made after 1990, Sean Connery movies made after 1987. ... " [More]

"I have to say this was a pretty funny movie, nothing much too wrong with this movie. This one girl that I know keeps saying at random times, "You go ass to mouth!" over and over. She also says, along with a lot of other people that I look like luigi, so I created a screen name in honor of clerks II and well my appearance, ass2mouthLuigi. That is seriously my SN, so if you want to talk to my, try to arrange a time. Anyways, this movie has limited jokes, but it gets me everytime. I actually rented it twice, once a while back when it first came out, and today. I am fixing to watch it again. Maybe I'll add more later, after I see the movie, to have it fresh in my head, but from what I know, I liked it. 4 out of 5 for the second Clerks movie. " [More]

Clerks II is yet another attempt by Kevin Smith to bring to a close the View Askewniverse he launched over a decade before with his low-budget comic gem Clerks. It is difficult not to think of this as a retreat after the failure of Jersey Girl to break out of that fictional world, but the fact is this type of crude yet occasionally socially perceptive dialogue is what Smith does at his best. The film offers a handful of monologues, most all of them by Jeff Anderson as über-caustic loser Randal, that dazzle. An uproarious sequence where Randal begins to suspect a beloved relative might be racist, and a sequence in which Randal's teenage Christian co-worker Elias (Trevor Fehrman) explains about the troll living inside his girlfriend that prevents them from having sex showcase how Smith uses vulgarity to get at deeper issues in the culture. That said, much of the film feels like Smith running away from any ambitions whatsoever. He has most certainly been here and done this before, and the conclusion of the film offers little hope that Smith wants to challenge himself or his diminishing group of devoted loyalists. This leaves a fan asking, "Where can he go from here?" That question might be less depressing if it wasn't the same thought that one took from his previous two films, Jersey Girl and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Clerks II is much better than those previous efforts, but it is hard to shake the feeling that Smith wants to diminish his and other people's expectations of himself just as his characters do. A lack of ambition is a prison for any artist, so one hopes Smith recognizes the irony of staging his climactic scene in a prison cell. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
