One of the most popular and influential video games ever makes its way to the big screen in this sci-fi thriller. A coalition of Earth's scientific and military interests have established a research colony called Olduvai on the planet Mars, but one day all communication from the outpost stops and no one can tell what has happened -- though the final messages suggest it's not good. Believing foul play may have overtaken Olduvai's crew, the Rapid Response Tactical Squad, a team of specially trained military personnel, are deployed to investigate the situation and, if necessary, eliminate the invaders. But Sarge (Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock) and Reaper (Karl Urban), leaders of the RRTS team, soon discover the situation is far more grim than they could have imagined. An experiment on Olduvai has very literally opened a portal to Hades, and a variety of savage and demonic creatures have overtaken the colony. Now the RRTS must seal off Olduvai, close off any access to Earth, and exterminate the satanic beasts before they can kill again. Doom also stars Rosamund Pike (as Dr. Grimm), Dexter Fletcher, Ben Daniels, and Deobia Oparei. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"I have been a fan of the game Doom since it first came out, so I really wanted to like the movie. Alas, while it had some moments, it didn't have enough of them. Certainly not the worst movie of the year, but not worth a sequel unless they do a much better job. " [More]

"Last week, I followed a link from Fimoculous to Wired’s GameLife, where blogger Chris Baker attempted to quell the anti-Roger Ebert sentiment in the game community by posting a game review written by Ebert for the magazine. If you just read that sentence and immediately asked yourself, “What anti-Roger Ebert sentiment in the video game community?” … well, let me back up a bit. In 2005, Ebert fired the first of several shots in what appears to have been an accidental battle, by admitting to never having played the video game that inspired the movie Doom. A reader named Vikram Keskar wrote in with an extremely well-articulated letter of protest: Doom works as a tribute because it fails so utterly as a movie. There is a reason so many video game-based movies suck: They are fundamentally different forms of representation. Thus by being faithful to the game, the movie pisses off the critic and pleases the gamer. …to which Ebert rather flippantly responded: Seen as a moviegoing experien ... " [More]

"DOOM **rated R (strong violence/gore & language)1 hr. & 40 min.directed by: Andrzej Bartkowiakwritten by: David Callaham & Wesley StrickLast week some of the fellas and I went out to the Tuesday night $5.00-free parking-free popcorn special at our local theatre. Parked our brains and watched the latest sci-fi video game translation to screen. You gotta know what you're goin' into when you make the decision to see these types of flicks. It cracks me up when people gripe and complain that a movie like DOOM was rotten. I mean that's one of the reasons trailers exist, so you can kinda make up yer mind, ya know? (My wife and I make it a tradition to do the whole thumps up/thumps down review after each trailer when we're at the movies.) When I first saw the trailer, I thought, "Ah, looks just okay but fun. I'll check it out with the fellas," and that's exactly what happened. For those of you who have no idea what DOOM is or about or never played the classic FPS video ... " [More]

"Let me start by saying I have only played a little of the doom franchise, most notably Doom 3. So writing this review I won't be heavily relating it towards the games, as I don't know that much about them to compare. I will say that I heard a lot of negative feedback about this flick and that I don't feel like it's getting the recognition it deserves. I also feel that once a game franchise is made into movies it more often then not carries with it an unfair disadvantage. Let me start by saying Doom is much more then just a sci-fi action flick, it touches on so many well rounded themes that really get over shadowed by the fact it is a "video game movie, staring a former pro wrestler". If you look into the story arc you will find a plethora of deep and intriguing elements. One of the most dominant themes in the story follows the concept of mans endless need for technology and science, which ultimately in this movie unlocks a hellish nightmare. There's a ... " [More]

While far from prize-winning material, the big-screen adaptation of Doom remains a breezy time at the movies that captures the feel of the game but adds little to the franchise's legacy. Taking its cues literally from Doom 3, the movie meticulously translates the game's sounds, images, and even first-person perspective shots into easy-to-stomach celluloid schlock for the masses. Sadly, apart from aesthetics, there's not much more that connects the game and the film. They're both fun rides that wear their inspirations on their sleeve, just as any comparisons to Aliens becomes a no-brainer when one stops and thinks about the source material. As it stands, the movie gives the audience just enough action to chew on without pandering to the audacious special effects that have hampered other video-game adaptations. While the plot is fairly brainless, there's just enough bullet-ridden action and blood-soaked gore to vaguely bring to mind the big-muscle intensity and horror elements that have made the game successful. However, those looking for the ultimate translation will most likely be disappointed with this modestly budgeted production. It certainly tries and is aided by The Rock's never-ending charisma, but the Doom film isn't the end-all-be-all movie that it should be. Fans of the third game have overwhelmingly stated their distaste for the adaptation, which could have been averted if the filmmakers would have only embraced the hellish monstrosities instead of focusing more on half-baked zombie adversaries. Separated from it's source material, though, the film remains a dumb and fun action ride, and sometimes that goes a long way for like-minded audiences looking for a good time. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
