Directed by Joss Whedon.
A band of renegades on the run in outer space get in more hot water than they anticipated in this sci-fi action-adventure adapted from the television series Firefly. In the 26th century, the galaxy has been colonized by a military force known as the Alliance, but its leadership has not gone unquestioned. The Alliance was once challenged by a league of rebels known as the Independents, but the Alliance emerged victorious after a brutal civil war, with the surviving Independents scattering around the galaxy. Also wandering the edges of the galaxy are the Reavers, who have won few allies due to their violent behavior and habit of ripping apart their enemies and eating them before they're dead. Capt. Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), who fought as an Independent in the galactic war, is the head of Serenity, a rogue frieghter ship whose crew includes Mal's first mate, Zoe (Gina Torres), who fought alongside him in the war, her husband, hotshot pilot Wash (Alan Tudyk), sunny but dependable mechanic Kaylee (Jewel Staite), and hard-nosed gunman Jayne (Adam Baldwin). The crew of Serenity wander the galaxy, taking on whatever work they can get, from criminal activities like smuggling and stealing to legitimately offering transport to travelers. Passengers aboard Serenity include professional "companion" Inara (Morena Baccarin) and holy man Shepherd Book (Ron Glass), but the real trouble aboard the ship comes with the arrival of Simon (Sean Maher) and his teenage sister, River Tam (Summer Glau). In time, the crew discovers that River has remarkable psychic powers and was being held captive by Alliance forces until Simon came to her rescue. Now the Alliance is hot on the heels of Serenity and its passengers, with The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a sinister Alliance tracker, leading the chase. Serenity was written and directed by Joss Whedon (in his directorial debut), creator of Firefly, which only lasted 11 weeks on the air but gained a powerful cult following who rallied to get the show released on DVD after its cancellation, leading to impressive home-video sales and and an eventual motion picture deal. A couple of months prior to Serenity's theatrical release, reruns of Firefly were picked up by the Sci-Fi channel, adding even more fans to its cult following. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"[quote user="unclefestering"] I'd have to say that for such a tiny woman, Summer Glau manages to get roles that kick ass and take names. I was thinking of both River Tam and the Terminator TV show. [/quote] I need to see that show. I watched Stargate the other day and realized it was missing a tough chick. It looks like the tv shows have remedied that? " [More]

"The Western Top 10 is the toughest for me. As some of you may know, while I'm hardly Richard Slotkin or Jane Tompkins, I write, teach, and think about this genre on a regular basis, and, as a result, my views are not only fairly strong, but well-informed. And, where certain well regarded classics are concerned, they are also iconoclastic. This is probably nowhere more obvious than with The Searchers (1956), the film that tops the AFI list. This film does not resonate with me on any level. I have never found the ending credible. John Wayne does not portray Ethan Edwards with any of the complexity needed for his embrace of Debbie (Natalie Wood) to ring true after his 118 (or so) minutes of hard, racist ranting about Native Americans and his intent to kill her. I also find the photography and production design to be garish without purpose, and for all of its superficial sophistication about Native peoples, the talk of ritual, the use of indigenous language, it only serves to perpetuat ... "It's amazing how a cast can instantly make us fans of a movie. If I had nine bucks, I would fork it over to see these two remakes of Raiders: Second Place to dansinch for imagining a cult classic that never was. I'm a big fan of Raiders and Big Trouble in Little China, but I think I like this movie more than either of those: John Carpenter's Raiders of the Lost Ark [SkyPilot's notes in brackets] Kurt Russell … Indiana Jones Kim Cattrall … Marion Ravenwood Sam Neill … Dr. Rene Belloq [Dr. Grant in Jurassic Park] Stephen Tobolowsky … Major Arnold Toht, "The Melting Nazi" ["Ned! Ryerson!" He was also Sammy Jankis from Memento. Brilliant!] Wilford Brimley ... " [More]

"I definitely was more than annoyed the first time I watched Serenity. The pseudo-futuristic amalgam language that's used and never explained (yeah, ok, it's mostly just cuss words but still), the references to other characters and places and events that are never shown or explained in the film, and just the weird Western-like nature of it. I had never watched Firefly and knew virtually nothing about the show. When watching it, I was so distracted by it all that I couldn't really focus on what was actually going on. However, watching it again a little more relaxed I loved it: mixing genres, the snarky Whedonisms (that made Buffy the Vampire Slayer such a great show) and the full range of development of each of the disparate characters. This lead me to watch Firefly (which was incredible) and then watch Serenity yet again which I finally completely fell in love with. " [More]

"If you were a fan of Firefly, you knows exactly what I am talking about. Firefly was an orginal creation by Josh Wheaton. For some reason the powers that be (FOX) decided that it wasnt a good enough television series that they canceled way before it had a real chance to florish. Little did they know that an underground movement would push back and have a huge cult following. So large in fact that they decided to come out with the movie Serenity. Serenity was a huge hit not only among the loyal brown coats, but also for those who never had actually watched the series or let alone knew that it existed. What was so great about the movie was you didnt have to be a fan of Firefly to enjoy Serenity. It was a movie within its own self. The plot was good as well as the acting and the special effects. Everything tied up neatly and centered around the explaination of what River Tam really knew about the Alliance. But how it effected all of them.Without giving anything away, you must either r ... "While I'm thinking of titles to toss out for discussion - I'd have a hard time coming up with a Top 5, although Once Upon a Time in the West is also my favorite, and I would make the case for McCabe and Mrs. Miller (as implied by one of my previous comments) - I'd like to suggest High Noon (1952; another candidate for my 5 were I to come up with a real one). It's an artfully made film, thoughtfully photographed, and with one of the best uses of a single, simple musical theme in all of Hollywood moviemaking (and if you doubt me about that, just watch a few minutes and you'll have "Do not forsake me, oh my darling" stuck in your head for days). It also lays bare the key tensions of the genre, particularly the one between civilization and the violent men that that same civilization uses to "tame the frontier." The moment where Will and Amy Kane are rushed out of town after dispatching the Millers is, to me, as poignant as any statement from The Searchers about the ... " [More]

"when the show (firefly) came out, it was the best show on tv.  when it went off the air, it could be argued that it was one of the best tv shows ever, if not the best (it certainly trumped buffy)  the movie was not as succesful, but it certainly is worty of some merit.  the acting is perfect, the storyline was good (even if it pissed some fans off) and the special effects were wonderful.  the camera work also stayed true to the show with a few good zooms and focus blurs.  the soundtrack was good, but sometimes i wish they used the show's composer.  me and a few freinds argue about this movie all the time, so it's about time for me to get hate mail.  i liked this movie more than lord of the rings in every way. "What can I say, having loved the Firefly series for its wit and on-screen chemistry of the cast (okay the story lines were pretty good too) I knew I'd either LOVE Serenity or hate it.... (but only in an "it didn't transfer to the big screen well" kind of way... ) Well I loved it, the whole thing transferred beautifully to the big screen, the action was "action packed" and the funnies were just as funny even though the whole thing takes on a slightly darker tone than the Firefly series itself. I laughed, I twisted in my seat to dodge laser, erm no EMP beams and I cried quite a bit too! Sorry but the film is tinged with a little sadness.Summer Glau excelled her self with the fight scene, which I believe she did most of if not all herself? Don't quote me on that! Most of the old plot holes from the series are all tied up neatly with a pink ribbon, which is a shame, as theres now no reason for a sequel! Only a few questions where left unanswered in my eyes, like who we ... " [More]

"I used to think Joss Whedon was a genius. No, start over. Joss Whedon is a genius, but he’s going through an interesting stage of re-development. I was one of those people who might have seen ‘Buffy:the Movie‘ (1992) on it’s initial release and greeted the series with an attitude of ‘meh’, only to see it grow into the trenchant occasion of ‘The Body‘ during its 5th Season, before the show became bored with itself. I also watched ‘Angel’ grow from its dodgy 1st Season to the kick-ass triumph of its early cancellation by the WB network. While both of those shows were interesting and ‘important’ in that parenthetical way that takes old ideas and recasts them in surprising new ways, the thing that REALLY sold me on Whedon was his ‘Alien: Resurrection‘ script. Though many people hated — hated - ‘Alien:Resurrection&rsqu o; (1997), I thought that it was the best installment of the franchise ... " [More]

Joss Whedon's feature film adaptation of his much-loved television program Firefly marks his big-screen directorial debut. The movie may enchant some newcomers, but it was obviously constructed primarily for the enjoyment of the series' hardcore fanbase. This can create a very sharp divide among viewers, as pre-existing fans will most likely remain enthusiastically approving of the film, while outsiders will probably find it less compelling, despite some back-story offered in the narrative to let its story potentially stand alone. This may be a simple matter of target audience, however, as Serenity unabashedly offers itself directly to its cult followers -- though it gracefully avoids indulging in the in-jokes that rendered the Star Trek: The Next Generation movie franchise too embarrassing for general consumption. Nathan Fillion, the only member of this ensemble cast that could arguably be described as a protagonist, delivers a likable and nuanced performance as Mal, the ragged captain of the freighter ship for which the movie is named. Mal's resilience is tempered with a wry cynicism as well as with a humanity that only selectively becomes more than a subtle internalization. The surrounding cast members offer nothing less than their absolute best performances as well, though fans may be disappointed that the time limits don't allow all characters extensive screen time. The fight, flight, and general action sequences in Serenity are beyond engaging, and the resolution of each would cause any enthusiastic audience to erupt in applause. The plot itself is smartly written, exploring and explaining cliff-hanging elements of the series that would no doubt have been fleshed-out had the show not been cancelled. It brings each of the characters -- all of whom are portrayed with elegance and affection -- to a completely new place both personally and logistically. This is what makes Serenity so much more than an elongated episode of Firefly: the landscape in which the story takes place has been reformed, creating in many ways a completely different world for these people to explore. In the end, Joss Whedon triumphantly breaks new ground in the genre of science fiction, defying all odds to tell his story. It's very possible that even some sci-fi fans who've never seen Firefly could enjoy coming along for the ride. It's refreshing to see universe that is neither utopian nor dystopian, characters who are both flawed and forgivable, and a sense that none of us are safe, but none of us will survive without hope that we will be. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
