Directed by Richard Shepard.
A chance meeting between two middle-aged men leads one into a life of crime in this offbeat comedy. Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) is an American businessman whose life has been going through a sour patch after he and his wife, Carolyn (Hope Davis), lost their young son. During a business trip to Mexico City, Danny strikes up a conversation in a hotel bar with fellow out-of-towner Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan), and while Julian's loud and brassy manner initially puts Danny off, in time the two become friends, and Julian feels comfortable enough with Danny to tell him what he does for a living. It seems Julian is a hired killer working under the auspices of underworld kingpins Lovell (Dylan Baker) and Mr. Randy (Philip Baker Hall), and Julian tries to persuade Danny to help him with his latest assignment. Danny refuses, but a few months later a distraught Julian appears unannounced on Danny's doorstep. It seems Julian has blown his two most recent assignments due to a variety of psychosomatic illnesses, and now Lovell and Mr. Randy want him dead. Julian has also done something to put Danny in his debt, and the previously non-criminal businessman is forced to help his friend stage a hit, with Julian's presence in his home upsetting the precarious balance of Danny and Carolyn's marriage. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Lately I've had more time to watch movies than I have had to write about them. Actually, that statement is a bit misleading, because any time I'm watching a movie I could be writing instead, but forgive me, I recently got cable for the first time in about 20 years, so I've been overwhelmed lately by so many viewing options. Some of the movies inspire a few random thoughts, but sometimes not enough to warrant a full review. So here goes, my first weekly roundup of the movies I've seen, but don't think I can stretch a full post out of. A little disclaimer; these weren't ALL within the past seven days, lest you think I've done nothing but sit on my couch 24 hours a day. I'm being a bit lenient in my first post so I can clean out the backlog.Justice League: The New FrontierI haven't read the graphic novel this is based on, but seeing how closely the animation follows the stylistic illustrations of artist Darwyn Cooke, I'm going to assume it's ... "The Matador (2005) is really good, but you have to be careful who you recommend it to. A struggling, straight-laced corporate businessman (Greg Kinnear) is in Mexico bidding for a contract when he bumps into a guy (Pierce Brosnan) pretty much his opposite: a killer for hire. Some months later, the businessman is enjoying success, his marriage is working wonderfully (Hope Davis), and suddenly the assassin rings the door bell looking for asylum and help. I had heard that this was a comedy, but the main comic element is the premise: A conservative middle manager becomes friends with an amoral assassin. Beneath the witty dialogue and the comic patina, the movie is deadly serious. For one thing, the killer is a nasty piece of work—no manners, not interpersonal skills, no friends, no morals.. There is a sense of menace and of a man out of control. For another thing, the relation between the two men may lead to no good for either of them. The acting by all three principals is gre ...
