Directed by Wolfgang Petersen.
Wolfgang Petersen adapted Michael Ende's children's story for this charming fantasy film that spawned several sequels. Bastian (Barret Oliver) is dealing with his mother's recent death. His father (Gerald McRaney) is an imperious sort who continually lambastes Bastian for daydreaming and falling behind in school. On top of his father's badgering, he has to contend with a bunch of school bullies waiting for him in the schoolyard. One day he decides to play hooky and walks into a strange bookstore, where in the attic, he discovers a book called "The Neverending Story". As Bastian reads the book, he's enveloped in the unfolding tale. A sickly child-like empress (Tami Stronach) from a land called Fantasia is concerned about who will take over the land if she dies. She decides it is best for Fantasia if she remains alive, so she dispatches a young warrior named Atreju (Noah Hathaway) to find a cure for the empress's malady. It turns out the land is consumed with a plague called The Nothing, generated by blighted dreams and hopeless fantasies. As Atreju continues onward to search for a cure for The Nothing, he encounters an assortment of strange creatures. Bastian is so consumed with the tale that he finds himself catapulted into the land of Fantasia himself. Atreju realizes that the only way to save the land from its blight is with the help of this strange earth boy, Bastian. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

"(photo: La Jetée, Hellboy II: The Golden Army) Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army hits theaters this Friday. Del Toro is a rare filmmaker who, despite his unique vision, often works on projects based on material from an outside source (Pan’s Labyrinth being a notable exception). Assuming all the legal issues get ironed out,  he’ll next direct a two part film adaptation of Tolkien’s The Hobbit, the most prestigious property to date to get the del Toro treatment. Here are seven either failed or unjustly obscure movies ripe for being remade by Hellboy’s father. 1. Spawn - Todd McFarlane’s comic about a Hell-trotting anti-hero indebted to the Devil opened my young eyes to genuinely dark storytelling. While the 90s were a simpler time in terms of comic to movie adaptations, I was already dreaming about a big screen adaptation after reading the first issue. Unfortunately, my dream came true in 1997, when Mark A.Z. Dippé’s god-awful Spawn slumped into theaters. 2. The Nev ... " [More]

"I've always been scared of black wolves. So I'll second the bid for The Neverending Story, but specifically the part where the big wolf is talking from within that cave. But the worst one for me was Benji The Hunted. There was a frightening wolf in that, and the worst scene is when Benji tricks the wolf to run off the side of the cliff. You see the wolf's body fall down this deep ravine while you hear the most blood chilling howl. For some reason this movie played often in my house. I don't know why we would have rented it more than once, but somehow it was always on TV or something. I would watch the movie with my family but have to run into the bathroom when I knew that scene was coming up and plug my ears. I had a lot of nightmares of wolves coming to attack me at school around that time. Holy crap, I just watched this and it just gave me major goosebumps. And I don't even have any audio at work. "Release Year: 1984Director: Wolfgang Peterson *****In the wake of the success of the original Star Wars trilogy, every producer in the world ran toward science fiction/fantasy films. Krull, Conan the Barbarian, Beastmaster. The list goes on and on. So it shouldn't be any shock that this film, released after 1983's Return of the Jedi is a fantasy film shamelessly riding the coattails of George Lucas' epic trilogy. What The Neverending Story forgets is that Star Wars was foremost about character and only secondarily about the aliens. Plus, frankly, the story told in a galaxy far, far away actually had an ending that didn't make the audience want to throw their popcorn at the screen. Bastian is a boy living in the modern world with modern problems: his mother is dead, his father doesn't quite know how to deal with his book-worm son, bullies pick on him. In short, he's the typical "nerd". But on the run from bullies one day, he enters an ... " [More]

"I never get tired of watching this film. Even though my cousin Jonathan will disagree, I think the SFX still mostly hold up, especially when you consider that "Clash of the Titans" came out only 3 years before this film, and the SFX in that film look horrible. I think the story is strong and even though the music is dated, that damn song will still get stuck in your head. If I ever had kids, they will most certainly be watching this film...and I hope they get as much enjoyment out of it as I have through the years. " [More]

"Yep, reliving my childhood again. When I watched it this time, my focus was drawn to two points: Atreyu unable to escape from Fantasia riding the Luck Dragon through The Nothing over the Sea of Possibility ... metaphorical, much?... and Atreyu's confrontation of G`mork.G`mork ... I was always afraid of him as a kid, but now he seems like a friend of mine. "I am a servant of the master of The Nothing. I aid The Nothing in Destroying Hope ... [Why?] Because people without hope are easy to control." Yes!But it all came together for me with What Dreams May Come. I won't say much more except something strange, like "before- and after adulthood."Before I started watching What Dreams May Come, I saw Anne Hathaway, 24, in Ok! First Celebrity News; and she reminded me of The Childlike Empress ... maybe she did play the Empress, though probably not---but I'm not putting it past her. " [More]

"Well, it might've been this (The NeverEnding Story), or The Goonies, or The Muppet Family Christmas ... but this was definitely one of the firsts. I'm not sure if Jim Henson or Frank Oz had anything to do with it, but the puppetry effects were at least up to their caliber.I put this on my 'Must See'-list because--though it might be a bit cheesy--it successfully, enjoyably engrains young people with the message: you do have to "keep your feet on the ground" (along with most of your human-interactions), but don't deny the Divine Spark its fuel! "The movie is very different from the book. The only part that I enjoyed was the inner story where one of the characters goes on the "Quest". But I find that in order for these books to be put to movies they need to stay as true to the book as possible for me to enjoy it. " [More]

"How could I not have responded to this convo yet?!?! Excellent topic. I refuse to relinquish my childhood completely anyway. As such, this will be tough for me, but here goes:1. Star Wars / Empire / Jedi - They may be obvious choices, but as we are embarking upon the 30th anniversary of Star Wars/New Hope, and as we are embarking on the 30th year of...something else...I have to say that I've never known a world without these movies, they're still my favorite, I still watch them, and I watched them a gajillion times when I was a kid. And poo on those prequels, which are so inferior despite their fancy CGI special effects.2. The Muppet Movie / The Great Muppet Caper / Muppets Take Manhattan - The three Muppet motion pictures where Jim Henson was still the voice of Kermit. I refuse to watch any of the rest of the series except A Muppet Christmas Carol for that reason. With the exception of Star Wars, no group of characters has made a more delible impression on my life. "1. The Empire Strikes Back: It's one of my first movie memories. I remember being afraid that the AT-AT and AT-ST walkers would attack the neighborhood. 2. The Adventures of the Wilderness Family: Probably the movie I watch the most as a kid. I re watched it about a year ago. Let me tell you, It does not hold up. 3. Fun And Fancy Free: For some reason, this was the Disney film that I always wanted to watch. I think it's still great. 4. The Neverending Story: So classic. 5. E.T.: It's still one of my favorite movies. " [More]

"Yeah Willy Wonka, the part where they ride that boat through the tunnel and Wilder sings that freaky song and there's all kinds of disturbings images projected up on the wall. I remember when I was a kid, Judge Doom scared the crap out of me when he turned into a cartoon as well. Now Roger Rabbit is one of my all time favorite films. Tmoney, I just read your blog on The Peanut Butter Solution. That does sounds like one of the freakiest things around. I was totally frightened of black wolves in movies. So I would always run out of the room when the wolf parts would come on in Benji the Hunted or The Neverending Story. The most chilling part of Benji was when Benji tricks the wolf into running off of that cliff to his demise. The wolf howl haunted my nightmares. I think it was Superman III. There was some part with a giant computer that would grab people and turn them into evil androids. I caught that on TV once and couldn't get the terrifying image out of my head. I think I w ... An epic fantasy that combines live action, puppetry, and animatronics, The Neverending Story delivers the goods as a mythical journey for kids. While failing to address a lot of material in the source novel of the same name by Michael Ende, the film version still manages a tense, dangerous adventure story filled with wonder. As the first English-language film for Wolfgang Petersen (director of Das Boot and In the Line of Fire), there seems to be both a sense of typical Spielberg suburban morality as well as deeper explorations into darker themes. The narrative structure makes no attempt to hide the underlying literacy message, as the bookend device of having Bastian (Barret Oliver) read the ancient story line certainly is a positive endorsement for getting kids to read more books and use their imagination. The synth-heavy soundtrack and quality of the special effects sticks this old-fashioned tale firmly in the '80s, making for a good nostalgia piece. The Neverending Story would be followed by two lesser sequels lacking the skilled direction of Wolfgang Petersen. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide
