Directed by David Jacobson.
A romance between a teenage girl and a thirtysomething drifter takes the young woman down a dangerous and unexpected path in this independent drama. Tobe (Evan Rachel Wood) is a pretty 18-year-old whose father, Wade (David Morse), is the sheriff of a town in California's San Fernando Valley. Tobe is driving to the beach with some friends when she stops at a filling station and meets gas jockey Harlan (Edward Norton), who dresses like a cowpoke and claims to have recently relocated to Los Angeles from South Dakota. Harlan is immediately and obviously taken with Tobe, and when she asks him to tag along for the day, he impulsively quits his job to follow her. Tobe and Harlan soon become a couple, but Wade is convinced Harlan is not all he claims to be, and Tobe begins to wonder if her father might be right when Harlan takes her horseback riding and their date is cut short after police inform them the horses have been stolen from an rancher (Bruce Dern) whom Harlan claims is a friend - and who promptly turns up with a gun to confront both of them, insisting that he has never seen Harlan before. Tobe's suspicions grow when Harlan offers to teach her little brother, Lonnie (Rory Culkin), how to shoot using a pair of real .45 revolvers, as his actions become less charming and more worrisome. Leading man Edward Norton also served as producer on this project. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Yes, I have my devised own system for rating movies, but it doesn't mean that 1) it works perfectly, and 2) that I am completely satisfied with it. (Am I ever completely happy with anything?) The problem with ratings systems is that they are, by state of being, merely numbered lists, and cold and swift in their doling out of opinion. There is no allowance in their efficient little stabs of icy preference over finely hewn lines of art, distinction or purpose between films of decidedly different ilk, nor is one able to discern within such ratings the notion of a film that is, in the parlance, "so bad it's good" as opposed to a film that is simply "good" or "bad." The number "6" is just a "6," and what that number means to the reviewer still requires further dissemination from that reviewer publicly for it to make true sense to the outside eye; to the reader, unless they are distinctly attuned already to the scale the reviewer has set as a pattern for judgment, they will have ... "I'm impressed with just about every role Edward Norton takes on, and his tranformation in Down in the Valley from country boy to dangerous drifter is no exception. This film quietly sneaks up and catches you off gaurd. It's a pleasure to watch, well shot and constructed. Noton pulls off a complex character which is hallmark of his best work, where even at the end of this surprising film, it's hard not to feel compassion for the bad guy. " [More]

"Down In The Valley In the outskirts of Los Angeles, rebellious teenager Tobe's (Evan Rachel Wood, Thirteen) aimless existence is turned upside down by a chance encounter with Harlan (Edward Norton), an older, charismatic cowboy who seems as if he would be more at home in Monument Valley than the San Fernando Valley. They pursue a passionate and furtive romance but it suddenly takes a dangerous turn when Tobe discovers Harlan is not all he appears to be. “It's mysterious and bold at every turn, and refreshingly removed from the commonplace.” – The Onion (A.V. Club) - Scott Tobias Website: http://www.downinthevalleyfilm .com/main.htm Opens July 21 – Showtimes Forthcoming http://www.uica.org/film.html " [More]
