Directed by Ang Lee.
Ang Lee's adaptation of E. Annie Proulx's story Brokeback Mountain stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as young cowboys named Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar. Each of them is hired to corral sheep on the title location and they soon bond very closely. Their platonic relationship explodes into a physical one, but eventually the two are separated when their job comes to an end. Although the two follow different life paths -- one becoming a father of two and the other marrying into a successful business -- they have a reunion years later. Each is affected profoundly by the rekindling of their old feelings for each other. Those feelings lead each to consider what continuing their hidden relationship would cost them. The screenplay was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

"I thought that I was going to see a movie that shows how homosexuals can achieve true love of the highest kind, and that is normal and beautiful. Instead, I found a movie that chronicles two promiscuous, lewd men who make so many mistakes in life that it is hard to assign them virtues. Each one does have his charm and his goodness, but in the end, they are immoral (in the worlds sense of morality, not just the Christian sense). What is odd is that their immorality has nothing to do with their homosexuality. They are just faulty people living their lives who happen to love someone of the same sex. Groan moments-1. When Ennis was a child, a homosexual was castrated for his wrongdoings. His father made sure his son knows what happens to homosexuals, and drags his son out to see this man. 2. Ennis has sex with his wife, but turns her over so that he can screw her in the butt. 3. There are cheap religious insults. 4. The boss to the two men stereotypically hates homosexuals. ... " [More]

"Sen. Patrick Leahy's film career has taken a macabre turn this week with the mysterious death of 28-year-old "Brokeback Mountain" star Heath Ledger. The Vermont Democrat, who had silver-screen cameos in two previous Batman movies, has a bit role in "The Dark Knight," the sequel to "Batman Begins," which is set to be released next summer -- though Ledger's death appears to have thrown post production of the film in turmoil. Leahy appears alongside Christian Bale, who plays Batman, and Ledger, who starred as the Joker. Leahy worked with Ledger during a two-day shoot in Chicago, according to Leahy spokesman David Carle. (The senator took an overnight flight to Davos, Switzerland, for the world economic forum so he was unavailable for comment on Ledger's passing.)Leahy is no stranger to showbiz. A lifelong Batman fan, Leahy made cameo appearances in the last two Batman movies, has done voice-overs for Batman cartoons and written the preface to ... " [More]

"You are probably aghast, thinking, "What, you haven't seen this movie until now??" Well, no. Truth be told, when this movie was out, and the buzz and controversy surrounded it, I knew the experience of watching it would be cheapened if not altogether ruined. This was why I was so happy to have seen Crash when I did, at least three or four months before it unexpectedly snatched Best Picture honors from this film, the heavy favorite at the time. I figured I'd see this one when I saw it. No rush. Then, my happy-to-lend friend had it amongst her traveling collection, and the rest is history. The story is relatively simple. Emotionally scarred and introverted Innis DelMar (Heath Ledger) and gregarious Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are cowboys hired as sheep herders by seedy boss Gary (Randy Quaid). They are expected to take the sheep up into the mountains, specifically Brokeback Mountain, for grazing. While there, they form a friendship and then an emotional bon ... " [More]

"Michelle Williams (I'm Not There, Brokeback Mountain) is in final negotiations to play the wife of Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the Martin Scorsese-directed Shutter Island, for Paramount Pictures. She also joins Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo in the drama, based on Dennis Lehane's 2004 novel, about a pair of U.S. marshals (DiCaprio and Ruffalo) who travel to a Massachusetts island to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane. The two get trapped on the island when a hurricane hits and a violent inmate riot breaks out. Williams is set to play the dead wife who haunts DiCaprio's character. Kingsley has just been cast as the hospital's enigmatic chief physician who reluctantly hosts to the two marshals. Shooting is scheduled to start in March. Williams got an Oscar nod for her role in 2005's Brokeback, and she will next appear in Fox's The List and writer-director Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York. She ... " [More]

"I probably shouldn’t even legitimize this with a post, but what the hell, it’s Friday: OK! Magazine, that bastion of fairness and accuracy in reporting (see their previous “scoop” from earlier this week) is reporting that Heath Ledger is about to sign on to star in a sequel to Brokeback Mountain: “It will follow the nasty process of being openly gay in 1963 Wyoming, an insider tells OK!. “Ennis will finally come out of the closet.” Defamer, noting that Ang Lee’s film followed Ledger’s Ennis DelMar through to 1983, calls bullshit: Escape from Brokeback Mountain promises to mine all the nasty gay processes missed by the original, while setting the stage nicely for part three, Brokeback Revolutions, in which our hero finally reaches the fabled realm of Zion (which looks a lot like a leather-themed circuit party in Fort Lauderdale). "I never even heard of this movie until I saw a funny skit on Comedy Central's "Mind of Mencia" where he created his own "Wetback Mountain" trailer. Yep, funny... funny. I would actually watch "Brokedown Mountain" if it wasn't about cowboys. I just don't like ranch movies. Grr. " [More]

"I’ve been following Electroma out of the corner of my eye for awhile. It’s the first feature film written and directed by Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, who are better known as the French techno duo Daft Punk, although there are no Daft Punk compositions on the soundtrack. Bangalter has described Electroma as “experimental and inaccessible; however, it’s a movie that does not require your brain to function.” It screened at Cannes, where it earned possibly the most condescending Variety review I have ever read, wherein Leslie Felperin sniped at the film’s “risible” plot and total lack of dialogue, and lobbed pejorative comparisons to Gus Van Sant’s Gerry and Vincent Gallo’s The Brown Bunny – which are two films that I absolutely adore — although she eventually concedes that one shot of a burning robot (is that a spoiler?) is pretty off the chain. And as more reviews roll in, the news seems to be getting better and better. This one, from Seattle’s The Stranger (whi ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski When an ape loves a woman, it turns out that he likes to woo the object of his affection the same way upright-walkin’ dudes do—the more sensitive ones, anyway. The beast will cuddle up to his sweetie and peacefully enjoy the sunset. Or gaze into her eyes in the middle of a quiet, snow-dusted street. And when the animal gets confused and frustrated while gallantly trying to walk on ice with her in his arms, he will just fall down and start gliding in circles with his girl, both giggling—yes, giggling—the whole time. At least that’s how it goes in the Hobbit King’s mind. And goes and goes—for 187 minutes, Peter Jackson's King Kong is nearly double the length of the 1933 original. How did Jackson and co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens stretch Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace’s relatively simple story to such epic proportions? Well, the movie is first a smaller-scale Titanic, then a ballsier Jurassic Par ... " [More]

"I must say seeing Brokeback Mountain for the first time was truly a beautiful and moving experience, which will probably stay with me for a long time to come. In fact, I feel like the film is still growing on me and that I will be appreciating it more and more when time passes... and when I inevitably will watch it again. I think it's a real shame the film has acquired the reputation of 'the gay cowboy film' (even though I know it's impossible not to call it that, it just kinda flows. :P ), as it might limit the amount of people who will go and see it - and possibly prevent exactly the types of people from seeing it who really should see it. Because first and foremost, it's a lovestory. A lovestory so sincere I can't even remember when I last felt so much for the characters in a film. The acting is so brilliant that gender becomes wholly inconsequential and you are left with just the raw essence of what all of us are about. You feel for these two people and understand their pain so ... " [More]

Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain is an effective and affecting psychological study of a man so afraid of revealing emotions that he nearly implodes due to his inability to express himself. Heath Ledger gives a beautifully nuanced performance as Ennis Del Mar, a man of the land who for a number of reasons is unable to share himself in a real way with anyone other than the love of his life -- and even then he is unable to open up fully. The fact that his great love is another man provides yet another reason why he feels he must keep his emotions inside himself. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jack Twist, the more outgoing of the pair. His gregariousness wins over the taciturn Ennis, but it also is the character trait that will eventually cause the two to have their biggest fight. The film smartly observes the men's relationships with their wives. One realizes that Ennis' inability to communicate would have caused trouble in his marriage even without his affair. Jack, being the more outgoing of the two, actually attempts to find ways to satisfy his closeted impulses even though emotionally he is drawn totally to Ennis. The pair are more than ably supported by Michelle Williams playing a simple but very smart woman, Randy Quaid, and Linda Cardellini, who gives Ennis a piece of advice about love that rings remarkably true in a film that seeks nothing more than to show what is inside the heart of a man trapped by inarticulateness. The film's final scene is so small it plays at the time like an anticlimax, but when a viewer takes stock of everything the character has gone through, one realizes how profoundly the character has changed. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
