Directed by James Wan.
The directorial debut from filmmaker James Wan, this psychological thriller comes from the first screenplay by actor Leigh Whannell, who also stars. Whannell plays Adam, one of two men chained up in a mysterious chamber. The other, Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes), like Adam, has no idea how either of them got there. Neither of them are led to feel optimistic by the man lying between them dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Together, Adam and Dr. Gordon attempt to piece together what has happened to them and who the sadistic madman behind their imprisonment is. Also starring Danny Glover and Monica Potter, Saw premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"Yeah, you're right, Rizzo. As I have mentioned before, the SAW movies are not my favorites for exactly that reason. I mentioned this as an example of REALISM in the sense that there were NO supernatural elements at all... The things in the movie COULD have happened although it is not very likely. For one, I would have figured out that the guy laying in the middle of the floor was not dead, ESPECIALLY if I were a DOCTOR... in an effort to get my hands on that gun I would convince the guy at the other end of the room to slide the toilet tank lid as hard is he could at the 'body' to move it a few inches in my direction so I could grab it. ("If I get out of here so do you..."). Then it would be 'game over'. Jigsaw would have no choice but to release me or he would die before I did... and his 'electrocution-buddy' wouldn't dare pull the trigger on that once I have a hold of his 'boss' because he would get it too... simple, hu ... "How plausible really do you find the movie Saw? There are a lot of far fetched and unlikely circumstances and coincidences in it. " [More]

"In spite of writers forcing primetime repeats as most of the country settles into winter (I recommend knitting as an alternative), the public seems to be siding against “The Corporations.” How American. Marketing guru behind Sweeney Todd–Tim Burton’s musical about a serial killing barber–struggles with “many niche audiences that need to be dealt with.” Solution: Promote it as Saw meets Dreamgirls. Jesse Eisenberg (Squid and the Whale) and Justin Bartha (Failure to Launch) will add to the “burgeoning ‘Jewsploitation’ genre” with a *comedy* about Hassidic drug mules. How does “sploitation” get added to an ethnicity? Case in point: Maria Full of Grace is sad, but if it had a Hassidic Jew cast? Oy vey! I just spit out my Schmaltz! "It is the summer of 1958 and young David (Daniel Manoche) meets Meg Loughlin (Blythe Auffarth), the new girl next door in Gregory Wilson's Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door. Meg's parents were killed in a car crash, and now Meg, and her sister Sharon (Madeline Taylor) are forced to live with Auntie Ruth Chandler (Blanche Baker) and her sadistic children including Wille (Graham Patrick Martin) and Donny (Benjamin Ross Kaplan). It is a summer that haunts David in his adult life. The film starts out as a coming of age story like Stand by Me or Stephen King's It. It develops in a different direction that is more unsettling. Meg is punished for every wrong thing and that builds until Meg is strung up to be tortured. It then becomes Saw and tries to make the audience blink. The acting is varied. Daniel Manoche's is good early with scenes of budding love, but loses character as he is forced to watch Meg's degradation. Blythe Auffarth's Meg suff ... " [More]

"Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! My bad! I had my calender on the wrong page! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... "I remember when this came out, everyone was freaking out about how scary and "good" this film was. So when it came out on DVD, I rented it. Sure, the ending catches you off guard - the first time you see it. On this, my second viewing, I was thoroughly unimpressed with this film. Sorry, folks - I just don't see how this could warrent three sequels (which I haven't seen). It's slightly remeniscent of better films (Seven comes to mind). Not my cup of tea, but for the gorehound-crowd, possibly a milestone...? " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski If you’ve caught the trailer for the new horror flick from young Australian filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell, consider Saw seen. And then think about buying a ticket to something scarier—Shark Tale, perhaps. This one-twist splatterfest turns on the premise of a serial killer who doesn’t actually kill, but rather forces his victims into elaborate emprisonments in which they either have to do themselves in or commit murder. As the teaser has the balls to flash: “HOW FUCKED UP IS THAT?” When the film opens, the villain has already done his dirty work: Adam (Whannell, who also co-wrote the script with director Wan), wakes up chained in a tub of muck. On the other side of the tiled basement hall is the similarly shackled Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes), who helpfully sets things in motion by saying, “Oh yeah, there’s this freak named Jigsaw who likes to watch people kill each other.” As the two talk—and t ...
