Directed by Chris Kentis.
Independent filmmaker Chris Kentis directs the dramatic thriller Open Water, based on a true story. Susan (Blanchard Ryan) and Daniel (Daniel Travis) are a busy married couple on an island vacation. They board a vessel called the Reef Explorer with a group of other scuba divers, traveling 15 miles out to sea. Since they are certified to dive in open waters, the couple breaks off from the group to go exploring. The Reef Explorer accidentally leaves without a proper head count, leaving them stranded in shark-infested waters. Kentis and producer wife Laura Lau did all the filming themselves in the actual ocean without extraneous special effects, while the actors wore special steel-mesh under their wetsuits in the scenes where actual sharks were involved. Open Water was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the American Spectrum competition. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

"Last night I did something I haven't done in a while. I actually sat down and watched a movie! All the way through, even! See, usually I don't have much of an attention span and get easily distract - look, a bird. Anyway, I watched Primeval and boy do I wish I hadn't. Why? 'Cause it was DUMB. Not just dumb, lower-case. Capital DUMB. Yes, it was humorous in parts, mostly brought out by Orlando Jones, but, then again, Jones was just another token black guy in a monster movie who, in the end, gets killed. LAME. And you don't even get to see him die a cool death, one that he deserves, one that he would say, while floating on his celestial cloud, "Man. Now THAT was a way to die." All you get to see is him running for his life with this gigantic crocodile lumbering after him. Then it goes in slow-motion and then...CUT! Different scene! What the hell?! Oh, but you do get to see his corpse later in the movie which, by the way, looks very much ... " [More]

"A River Runs Through It?! Well, at least Das Boot was mentioned, even though it wasn't actually included on the list (it would be my #1). Some others I would definitely include would be A Night To Remember (certainly the best film based on the Titanic disaster), Lifeboat (great single-set Hitchcock that takes place entirely on the water), Run Silent, Run Deep, The Caine Mutiny and, of course, Open Water. "Swingers's detail pageI thought I wouldn't like participating in this group at first because it get's frustrating complaining about movies, but I can't seem to hold myself back. Puhnner, you asked me to list some of my overrated movies, referring to my definition of overrated by ratio. Well I'm not sure if this is going by the same criteria, but I've come up with a list from another source. I also rate movies at the website movielens. It will give you recommendations based on your ratings and whatnot. It also gives some interesting statistics. For one, it tells me which movies I have rated the lowest compared to the average rating on their site. So I have looked at that list and picked several of them. The thing about this method is that I am not using what my impression of the ammount of acclaim a movie has received for the ratio but rather what the ammount of acclaim a website thinks a movie has based on the votes from it's users. is neutral about it.
It took almost 30 years for a film to truly take the "terror in the water" concept to the next level, something that 130,000-dollar indie underdog Open Water pulls off in a frightfully intimate way. By tapping into the subconscious fear of isolation, the filmmakers tease the audience with a deep-rooted phobia that, thankfully, most will never have to face. The fact that the story plays on people's inherent anxiety of being completely separated from loved ones only elevates the tension to another terrifying level that many viewers will have a hard time facing. While the two leads do an admirable job of basically carrying a two-person film, the ultimate test will be if the viewer is drawn into the drama through their own experiences rather than just by watching the tale unfold. Oh yes -- and it doesn't hurt that those are indeed real sharks swimming around the actors! In fact, take the sharks away, and you still have an interesting tale to tell, though you can bet that the last half-hour wouldn't be as nerve-racking as this one is. Needless to say, if you're afraid of what lies beneath the ocean, there's a high chance that this movie will deeply affect you. Those looking for more standard and grotesque scares might come away disappointed, as will those who cast a critical eye in light of the Blair Witch similarities. For many moviegoers though, this is that kind of desolate nightmare that will take them quite a while to recover from. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
