Directed by Shane Carruth.
The debut feature from filmmaker Shane Carruth -- who wrote, directed, photographed, edited, scored, and stars -- Primer is a psychological sci-fi thriller about a group of four tech entrepreneurs. Toiling away in a garage, the quartet have successfully created error-checking systems for their clients. But their recent work seems to have created an unexpected and seemingly impossible side-effect. Suddenly, two members of the group realize they are in possession of a device that can double, or perhaps even quadruple, the space-time continuum of anything that enters it. What at first seems like a windfall of astronomical proportions eventually proves to be much more than they bargained for, as the duo attempt to manipulate time to their financial -- and emotional -- benefit. Also starring Casey Gooden, Anand Upadhyaya, and Carrie Crawford, Primer premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the coveted Grand Jury Prize for dramatic film. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"Primer isn't a movie that tries to reach the lowest common denominator in terms of audience. It expects you to meet its concepts. And for those that do there is a great payoff. Four engineers in a tiny startup realize that they have built something amazing, but don't quite know what they have. Two of them figure out they have built a time machine and manage to buy out the others. At that point they start going back in time to make money on the stock market, always careful to avoid interfering with themselves or anyone they know. But eventually the temptation to interfere in their own lives becomes too great and the repercussions grow greater and greater. This harkens back to when science fiction movies were about ideas and not just explosions. There is a lot of tech talk, but is easy to follow and actually has meaning, unlike the techobabble in most science fiction movies. It isn't boring, but the deliberate pace of this movie may put some people off if they are expecting and actio ... " [More]

"Something that seems to happen more and more these days are movies in which people see them, leave the theater going "Huh," or "Umm," or "That was interesting," and then go home and spend hours reading up on the motivation behind the film and what exactly the filmmakers were trying to convey with it. I'm torn on this (shouldn't a good film need no explanation?) but acknowledge that I am myself guilty of this. Here we go:1.) Mulholland Drive - Not that I was completely oblivious to most of the films goings-ons (this undoubtedly being what everyone says when justifying their love for it), I was just so in awe of it all that I wanted to find out what the film was born out of (it was originally going to be a television show that never got anywhere so Lynch turned it into a film).2.) The Hours - Having just read Mrs. Dalloway the year before and loving it, I felt inclined to research how much of the film was actually based on Virginia Woolfs life and how much was just exaggerated ... "I'm not sure what the budget was for these films but I'm sure it was low. I can't really explain why but I was a pretty big fan of the latest two Polish Bros films, Twin Falls Idaho and Northfork. It's wierd because I've never been a big fan of David Lynch and these guys' film are so obviously similar to his work. I loved The Elephant Man, but other than that, I've never really cared too much for his work. Also, just to chime in, I loved Primer and I think it's because I had never seen a time-travel film tackle the obvious conflicts of time-travel before. (exept for possibly Donnie Darko, in a different way.) Such as what happens when your cell phone rings and what do you do with all the extras. " [More]

"Let's watch Primer because it's an Indi film with a cult following. It's the kind of movie that you'll need to watch multipul times. It's a beautifully shot move and they spent $7,000 making it. There's plenty to talk about. It's perfect for Film Friday!!! you can read a nice bit about it on the AV Club. " [More]

"Seems like you figured the movie Primer out well enough to me.You recognize the ambiguity. Are you taking it as some kind of challenge that you have to look for clues to try to piece it all together? I'm not sure if you would be able. I think there was ambiguity on purpose. Honestly, with such a good premise like this I would have rather there was something where you could piece it all together and really show some of the outrageous situations that might arise if this really could happen. But it seems like time travel movies never really go that far. I guess the science really isn't exciting enough for people. " [More]

"I dunno, I've seen Primer because I heard great stuff about it and it sounded like something I could really get into. But I think they set up a fantastic scenario that they totally squandered. It could have gotten a lot more exciting and convoluted in a good way. Instead it just sort of hinted at things but not in any satisfying way, to me at least. " [More]

"Primer is an accomplishment. Ignoring the fact that the budget was only 7 thousand dollars, the film is very entertaining. Primer never slows down and last a good length so that you can watch it without feeling like you're watching an epic. It really does go straight back to classic sci-fi comparable to "The Fly" and "Pi" " [More]

"This is by far the best science fiction movie I have ever seen. I didn't understand all of the technological (apparently Carruth was some kind of engineer) lingo, or even all of the levels that this thing may possess, but I was instantly aware of its intellectual superiority. The tone is low and slow. It will lose a lot of its audience in the first fifteen minutes due to an abundance of narration that is impossible to follow. But disregard all of that. Upon watching it in completion for the first time, I was blown away! I understood everything that happened, but just couldn't believe it. At a very short running time, 93 minutes or something like that, I pushed play again and just sat back, determined to learn more. Incredibly realistic (except for the whole time travel part). Insanely cheap production cost ($7,000). Amateur acting that isn't even noticable. This is one impressive film. I recommend it to all. " [More]

"I read a bevy of reviews concerning this mind game, to see if I grossly overlooked something or if the narrative really was as disorganized and unsure of itself as I thought it was. It danced around a focus but never quite lighted upon it; the inner workings clicked and clacked but never got rolling; it aspired for a lot and is up for debate as to whether or not it made it. Shop around, if you will, for other thoughts and reviews for a collective opinion is more reliable and informative than a single review, plus several are quite eloquent, succinct and wrap up the author's thoughts in a neat package. Check external reviews on imdb.com for definitive takes on this odd, quirky flick. Classic tagline though: "when you always want what you can't have, what do you want when you can have anything?" There's a moment in Shane Carruth's impressive debut feature, Primer, that sums up the filmmaker's point-of-view quite nicely. It's not the line quoted in many reviews, where one addled engineer asks another, "Are you hungry? I haven't eaten since later this afternoon," although that line exemplifies Carruth's prickly wit. It takes place before the main characters' great, accidental discovery when two men discuss NASA's efforts to develop a pen that would work in zero gravity. After spending millions trying to work out the problem, the agency ended up using a simple pencil. Primer is the science-fiction film equivalent of that pencil, and the remarkable amount of bang the film gets for its buck is only one of its virtues. A less imaginative filmmaker with a big budget at his or her disposal would have started the film where Carruth ends Primer, a precarious moment when it seems the world is about to change. But Carruth is more interested in intimate moments of discovery, as the moral and philosophical implications of Abe (David Sullivan) and Aaron's (Carruth) invention reveal themselves. Because Carruth trusts his audience's intelligence, he allows us to share in these discoveries, rather than spelling everything out. Which is all well and good, to a point. But even the most attentive viewers may have trouble finding their bearings as the film opens with a quick flow of engineering jargon, and anyone who can follow the temporal twists and inversions of the film's final third probably deserves an engineering degree. Primer is a witty, well-shot, and convincingly acted science-fiction brain twister, leading one to suspect that on repeated viewings a rock solid narrative will reveal itself. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
