Directed by Edgar Wright.
It's often said that the true character of a man is only revealed in times of dire crisis, and for likable, lovelorn loser Shaun (Simon Pegg), that moment of reckoning came when the dead rose from their slumber to feast on the flesh of the living. A hapless electronics store employee who spends most of his spare time downing pints at the local pub with his roommate, Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun's life seems to fall apart when he is dumped by his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield), and his obnoxious stepfather, Philip (Bill Nighy), shows up to berate him for not being more attentive to his caring mother Barbara (Penelope Wilton) -- especially since he forgot to send flowers for her birthday. Things take a turn for the worse when the dead return to stake their claim on the Earth, and though the chaos that follows threatens to swallow up all of England, it's up to Shaun to keep his cool and prove himself once and for all by successfully rescuing Liz and his mother. With his trusty roommate by his side, nothing -- not even the living dead -- can stand between Shaun and the two most important women in his life. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Diane in "Shaun of the Dead." I'm artsy, and would probably end up doing some pretty desperate and retarded things in the face of a zombie attack. I dunno if I'd run into a crowd of zombies weilding my boyfriend's leg as a cudgel, but who knows. " [More]

"Superbad Junket Meltdown on FunnyOrDie.com Two newly announced collaborations are making my birthday a very special one. In one corner we have the casting of Michael Cera in an Edgar Wright film, which seems almost like an intentional gift from a regular SpoutBlog reader. The only thing missing is the news that this film will also feature the Muppets, a plot involving an Objectivist teleporter and a 3-year-old Star Wars fan. The Cera/Wright team-up is titled Scott Pilgrim’s Little Life, and structurally it sounds like Wright’s Shaun of the Dead. Based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel Scott Pilgrim Volume 1: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, and scripted by Wright and Michael Bacall (Manic), the story involves a “young slacker” (Cera) who must defeat the evil ex-boyfriends of the girl he loves in order to win her heart. As if Cera couldn’t win any girl’s heart just by doing nothing. See the video above for the first sorta collaboration between Wright and Cera (and Jonah Hil ... " [More]

"There may not be any literal baton passing going on in the marathon-set screwball comedy Run, Fatboy, Run, but the movie, which was directed by Friends star David Schwimmer, is noteworthy for its hand-offs. The first has to do with the writing of the film, which began as an original screenplay by American actor/comedian/writer Michael Ian Black (Wet Hot American Summer) and was later reworked by British actor/comedian/writer Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead). Despite the screenplay credit confusingly indicating the two writers collaborated, it is more a matter of one taking over from the other and going the distance with it. The second pass relates to the actors. Although Run, Fatboy, Run is sold as a Simon Pegg comedy, the true stand-out is lesser-known Dylan Moran, who supports as Pegg’s character’s best friend. Familiar to most Brits as the star of the Channel 4 series Black Books (which I keep meaning to finally rent), Moran has also appeared in minor roles in the movies Shaun of ... " [More]

"Awesome TopicThe New World - Just as T-Money said, this movie seemed advertised as a war movie, instead of the contemplative piece it was.Shaun of the Dead - I thought this movie looked so incredibly stupid from the trailer. So much so I never wanted to see it, until finally I was forced to, and thought it was the best comedy I had seen in a long time.Hot Fuzz - This time i didn't let the trailer discourage me, but still...people can't seem to give these films the advertisement they deserve.Night Watch - After seeing the trailer, I was so excited to see this film. I had to...every moment without it was painful. And then I watched it, and was disappointed. The movie isn't necessarily bad, but it's not nearly as good as the trailer makes it out to be. Although, I might just be partial to the M83 song they played over it (which never actually makes it into the film).Domino - Okay so the movie was exactly like the trailer. Just extended. When I first saw the trailer, I ... " [More]

"Edgar Wright has been linked to an adaptation of the Marvel superhero Ant Man since before even Shaun of the Dead was made. Surprisingly, he’s still attached to the project, a feat that is rare in Hollywood. But since Ant Man is a lesser character in the Marvel Universe, there seems to be less of a rush to get him up on the big screen. However, last week Wright told Empire that he has at least completed a screenplay after all these years, and he is taking a meeting (undoubtedly with someone from either Marvel Studios or Paramount) about the movie this week. The writer-director, who last gave us Hot Fuzz, is still unsure what his next gig will be, though he seems to have it narrowed down to Ant Man and another comic adaptation titled Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, the plot of which sounds more in line with Wright’s penchant for comedic gore. While I eagerly anticipate anything that Wright serves up, I’m especially interested in the Ant Man adaptation. In an interview with Mov ... " [More]

"Simon Pegg was great. It was sad what happened to his mother in the movie. His friend in the basement chained up and playing video games was pretty much where he had been before getting infected by the walking dead zombies. I've heard Simon was funny in Hot Fuzz, you know, the one where the British cop ate the twinkle and started having headaches? " [More]

"It’s an ultra-crowded weekend at the box office, with four major films (Michael Clayton, We Own the Night, Tyler Perry’s latest, and the sequel to Elizabeth) either opening or expanding. It’s so bad that neither studio prognosticators nor Variety are even willing to venture a guess as to the eventual winner. “Studio sources uniformly agreed that the weekend looks like a toss-up, with any of the four debuts having the potential to break out,” goes the Variety story. “The four bows are aiming at somewhat different auds, leading studios to hope they can co-exist peacefully.” J.J. Abrams is stocking his Star Trek movie with stoner comedy veterans. John Cho (better known as Harold) will play Sulu, and Simon Pegg (better known as Shaun) has been cast as Scotty. 77-year-old Jean-Luc Godard is expected to show up at the 20th European Film Awards in December to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award. Shaun of the Dead is an uproarious romantic zombie comedy that amazingly lives up to each of those genres in a fully respectable and entertaining way. With a return to the type of George Romero zombie logic that many genre throwbacks around this time threw out the window in favor of super sped-up monster attacks (see Dawn of the Dead remake or the laughably bad House of the Dead for reference), Shaun embraces the lumbering menace these type of undead creatures originally possessed, though the filmmakers aren't too afraid to poke their noses at it from time to time. With a hilarious cast headed by co-writer/director Simon Pegg (who along with co-director Edgar Wright created the hit U.K. television series Spaced), this tale of gory suburban survival is brought to life by a lively bunch of characters that each bring their own classic moments to the screen. Wonderful as well are the touching scenes that come out of nowhere and punch the viewer square in the gut just when they were least expecting it -- something incredibly rare in the horror comedy world and a direct result of a shrewd script and the gusto performances that pull them off. With scene after scene of inspired comic setups by a brilliant ensemble cast along with heaps of the red stuff when needed, Shaun of the Dead lives up to its near-unanimous hype and adds its very own touch to the world of gut-munching cinema. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
