Directed by Jared Hess.
The directorial debut of filmmaker Jared Hess, who also co-wrote the screenplay, Napoleon Dynamite is a quirky, offbeat comedy set in the small Idaho town of Preston. Jon Heder stars in the titular role, a carrot-topped oddball with a decidedly eccentric family that includes his llama-loving, dune-buggy enthusiast grandmother. The story centers on the local high school's race for class president. Using some nontraditional means, Napoleon is determined to help his pal Pedro (Efrem Ramirez) run a winning campaign and defeat popular girl Summer (Haylie Duff). Also starring The Drew Carey Show's Diedrich Bader, Napoleon Dynamite premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"The elements of this are familiar to us ...somehow..The dysfunctional ,bizarro family, the idiot savant,or is he just an idiot?...the sympathetic "crazies" ,lining up and taking on the "normal" people..."Napoleon Dynamite" is totally charming and life affirming...At it's core is something as warm-hearted ,romantic and melancholic as "Gregory's Girl".and it's very very funny...what more could you want? "Everybody’s talking about how the WGA strike may affect this year’s Sundance marketplace (Variety and Scott Foundas among them), but studios looking to make up for a lack of in-house product with appealing-looking indies may want to think twice before opening the checkbook. It’s easy for buyers to forget that Hollywood still knows nothing about what moviegoers really want, and it’s very easy to waste a whole lot of money bidding on a film that isn’t going to be worth it’s purchase price. This week, the Onion’s A.V. Club features a list of Sundance flops — those movies that were a big deal at the festival yet failed at the box office. It’s probably meant to just be a fun look back at the errs of the marketplace, but really it functions as a warning to this year’s buyers. What they think is the next Napoleon Dynamite could really be the next Tao of Steve (which happens to have sparked a hilarious discussion in the comments section — possibly featuring Donal Logue himself). "I’ve read two stories in two hours that refer to Juno as “crossover hit.” I’m not denying that it is, so far, a hit, both with audiences and with critics. But tell me again how this film??????made by a not-exactly-maverick director for a studio specialty division, starring three known actors and one tabloid staple, targeted at teens and young adults, both thematically and stylistically indebted (or, at the very least, related) to previous hits like Superbad, Ghost World and Napoleon Dynamite??????qualifies as a “crossover”? Yes, Searchlight bought “indie” credibility by taking Juno to a bunch of festivals and rolling it out slowly. But we’re also talking about a film that’s been advertising on NYTimes.com for over three months. This is so clearly a studio film that, in a bit of smart awards season strategy, has been sold by its distributor as an indie. Why are journalists who should know better playing along? "This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entryWelcome to the DollhouseThis is the second movie year countdown movie in a row that was suggested to me by Andy. However I already had my eye on this movie since I had thoroughly enjoyed Todd Solondz's Happiness. However my eye was on one of his other movies before this one. Something about the fact that the main character was an adolescent girl made me think i just wouldn't connect. I was way wrong.I watched this one with Adam who said something like, "this movie is like Napoleon Dynamite if it were more realistic and more funny." He might have also said something about and if it were a lot more sad and painful to watch too, but that might have been implied. Of course Welcome to the Dollhouse came out almost ten years before Napoleon Dynamite too.I find this movie to be so perfect. Off the top of my head I can't think of a better movi ... " [More]

"I have never been to a Film Festival before, so I was pretty fresh to the scene at Water Front in Saugatuck, MI this year. It was a small, quiet resort town, mostly untainted by hype or the onslaught of cinephiles. There were just a lot of people, anywhere between the ages of 1 and 80, who simply came out to enjoy the films and maybe meet a few other film-lovers. The festival itself flowed pretty smoothly (except Fed-Ex some how managed to misplace several films, which then had to be shown in digital instead of celluloid; much to the film-purists chagrin), which is pretty incredible considering it is a completely volunteer-run festival. Even the promotional media that they showed before films seemed well-done, and were at the very least clever and humorous. The first film I watched while I was there was The Go-Getter, a film by Martin Hynes; his second after a film he made in 1999. The Go-Getter stars Nick Offerman, Jena Malone, William Lee Scott, Zooey Deschanel, and Lou Taylor P ... " [More]

is neutral about it.
Napoleon Dynamite shows the hilariously terrifying high-school life of a social outcast with equal parts of raw, firsthand-experienced truth and oddball surrealism. At times, it makes the viewer wonder just what time period or what world the film is actually set in. Much like the work of director Todd Solondz, this debut film from first-time director Jared Hess tricks the audience into laughing at the main character's awkward situations and nerdish dialog about ninjas and dragons one minute, and then shows the harsh reality of the world he is forced to inhabit. Napoleon's (Jon Heder) world is populated with characters who are just as over-the-top peculiar as he is, which, along with its obvious love of early '80s fashion, distances the audience from the film. Perhaps the director intended to not let the audience connect with any of the characters. Perhaps while watching the film, we are to experience exactly what Napoleon feels, as he never opens up to anyone around him and we see all of his missed opportunities pass by. While the film does often seem unfocused, its flaws do not fully weigh it down. It is easy to root for Napoleon during his quest for some kind of emotional connection. Even though the payoff in the film's ending is surprisingly warm and good hearted, it's hard to not wish there was just a little more to grab on to. ~ Jason Gibner, All Movie Guide
