Directed by Jessica Yu.
Award-winning short filmmaker Jessica Yu makes her feature-length debut with In the Realms of the Unreal, a documentary about outsider artist Henry Darger. Born in 1892, Darger lived in Chicago and worked as a janitor for most of his life. When he died in 1972, his landlord found his life's work: The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion (often simply referred to as The Realms). A massive, multiple-volume fantasy novel, The Realms also contains nearly 300 illustrations of collages, drawings, and paintings. Rather than interview art scholars and psychologists, Yu chooses to look at Darger's work from the viewpoints of those who knew him. Yu also incorporates animation segments into the documentary, using Darger's original images. In the Realms of the Unreal was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the documentary competition. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

"This is in no particular order... I guess I'm just trying to go for various aspects of human nature / behavior to share with these aliens in sort of broad strokes... 1.) Being There (1979) A great demonstration of how humans behave as leaders and followers and how the media exercises such a strong hold over society. 2.) Nobody Knows (2005) Shows the resiliency and unspoiled faith of children and the importance of familial / sibling relationsihps. 3.) S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine (2002) A documentary about the lowest and cruelist in human behavior, the ability (and necessity) to face the consequences of one's actions and the possibility of forgiveness and dialogue. 4.) In the Realms of the Unreal (2003) Another documentary, this one a remarkable testament to the mind's capacity for almost limitless creativity and the drive to create even if one's work is never recognized or shared. 5.) Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985) Aside from being flat out one of the best movies ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Henry Darger would have hated the attention. The subject of Jessica Yu’s documentary In the Realms of the Unreal, the Chicagoan was a lifelong recluse and likely schizophrenic who died in a poorhouse in 1973. Previously, Darger had spent 40 years living in a rented room, holing himself up after shifts as a janitor or dishwasher in local hospitals and rarely interacting with people, though other residents reported hearing what seemed to be conversations through his door. After Darger’s former landlords cleaned out his room and discovered the volumes of drawings and writing that had apparently been serving as his social outlet, Saturday-night entertainment, and entire universe, Darger suddenly became of interest to the world he shunned. His work is now displayed in museums and outsider-art galleries across the country, and in Realms of the Unreal, Yu takes ballsy liberties with Darger’s unwitting legacy, animating his illustrations and having a ...
