Directed by Gus Van Sant.
Gus Van Sant's dreamtime riff on Shakespeare's "Henry IV, Parts I and II" features River Phoenix as Mike Waters, a narcoleptic male hustler who is first seen drifting on a stretch of highway in Idaho. Mike shifts from Seattle to Portland, where he has taken up with Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves), who is also a hustler. The difference between them is Mike's sleepy state betrays an uncertain future, while Scott is ready to inherit a fortune from his father within a week. Mike feels a real affection for Scott, but Scott does not believe men can really love each other. Besides, Scott is mostly hustling as a means of slumming and killing time before he inherits his money. Mike, however, delusionally thinks Scott will continue with his life as a drifter after receiving his inheritance. Mike's belief is shared by the dregs of Portland, who live out of an abandoned hotel with their spiritual leader Bob (film director William Richert). They're convinced Scott's fortune will benefit them all, when in reality Scott has other plans. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

"Released: September 27, 1991 (New York Film Festival)Director: Gus Van Sant*****The greatest tragedy to come out of My Own Private Idaho has nothing to do with the unrequited love story between two hustlers (River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves), but with the untold potential which died with Phoenix in 1993. As involving as Reeves is here, the story is about Phoenix's Mike and his longing to find love no matter what form it might take. This isn't a gay film, per se, though it has been labeled as such. Yes, Mike declares his love for Reeves' Scott and the hustling sex is primarily between men, but the love goes beyond the physical kind. Mike is in search of any kind of love he can can get his hands on; he'll make due with attention, too, which he then mistakes-perhaps-as love from Scott. The theme is pounded throughout the script alongside flashes back to Mike's mother and an unsettling encounter with a man who is supposed to be Mike's brother-only he isn't.As hustling stories go, My Own ... "Man, this movie is bizzare. Although I have mixed feelings about it, I certainly have to give it points for quirkyness and originality. On the other hand, at the very end of the film, I had no idea what the point was. The film is centered around the lives of two men, both bisexual male prostitutes. Mike (River Phoenix) has narcolepsy, and has been wandering around aimlessly, suffering from a childhood traumau. Scott (Keanu Reeves) is the son of a rich businessman who is about to recieve a huge inheritance. When he turns twenty one, which is only a week away, he plans on giving up his life and following in his father's footsteps, becoming respectable. Before that happens, Scott decides to help Mike in an effort to find his mother, who has haunted Mike since childhood. The film is based on Shakespeare's King Henry IV, Part One. I have not read the play, or seen it performed, but the Shakespearn orgin is easily betrayed. Characters often have solilquries, and it's clear that m ... " [More]

"There’s some cool new promo stuff up online for Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind. The film is about two video clerks who accidentally demagnetize every VHS tape in their store while their boss is on vacation, and then proceed to produced no-budget camcorder “remakes” of the most rented titles. The studio is–smartly, I think–exploiting the DIY theme of the story in order to sell it to kids who live online as a user-participatory event. First, go to the official website. Wade your way through the animation about the internet being erased, and tell it that you want to rebuld the internet. Eventually, you’ll get to a place where you can insert an image of yourself into a VHS box of a “classic” film, such as, um, Drop Dead Fred. I went with My Own Private Idaho, because I thought it would be funny. See above. Then, there’s the obligatory “viral” video component. So far, there are three trailers on YouTube, representing three of the films remade within Be Kind Rewind. I’ve pasted my favori ... " [More]

"My list is more guilty pleasures as actors, not films. I could probably make Top 5 lists out of each of these people and more... but here goes: 1. Sylvester Stallone: Rocky II, III & IV. I don't include the first because it's a great movie and I am not ashamed of liking it. I didn't include V because it's crap. And I haven't seen Rocky Balboa so I can't say one way or the other. Also Cop Land.2. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 80s (and early 90s) catalog defines guilty pleasure over and over. I hate that I like Twins, Terminator, The Running Man, Total Recall, Predator. However, I will proudly say that I like T2. Now if only T3 had been watchable...3. Keanu Reeves - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey, Matrix: Reloaded/Revolutions (the first wasn't a guilty pleasure in my book), Point Break , Feeling Minnesota, My Own Private Idaho, The Devil's Advocate, The Watcher.I could almost combine 4 - 5 and some of them probably aren't ... "Watched Klute last night. I'm a bigger fan of Donald Sutherland than I am of Jane Fonda, but she was terrific in this movie. This film had a very crisp, clean look, considering the subject matter. Started thinking about the fascination cinema has had with prostitutes.Child prostitutes in Pretty Baby and Taxi Driver.Male prostitutes in American Gigolo and My Own Private Idaho.Offbeat movies: Whore, Crimes of Passion.Mainstream: Pretty Woman.Others: Leaving Las Vegas, Blonde Venus, A Streetcar Named Desire What's the fascination? Gus Van Sant's third feature further established him as a spokesman not just for alienated gay men but also for disaffected youth in general. A harsh, beautiful, and fervently original portrait of alienation, betrayal, and unrequited love, My Own Private Idaho was one of the defining films of both Van Sant's career and the New Queer Cinema of the 1990s. While Drugstore Cowboy (1989), Van Sant's previous film, had focused on a group of people driven to society's fringes by their drug addiction, Idaho dramatizes a group of people driven to society's fringes by their sexuality. As in Cowboy, Van Sant refrains from grand pronouncements about the lifestyle of the social/sexual outlaw; and his focus on the relationship between River Phoenix's Mike and Keanu Reeves' Scott gives the film emotional resonance. Phoenix in particular is heartbreaking as the lovelorn, narcoleptic Mike, whose campfire-side declaration of love for Scott remains one of the most poignant and honest depictions of male-to-male longing ever captured onscreen. Phoenix's quiet, raw portrayal of the young hustler would be constantly referenced in tributes to the actor following his untimely death in 1993, and the close association seems fitting: with its bleak, dreamy ambience and mournful yet unsentimental story, My Own Private Idaho feels less like a narrative than like an elegy for the romantic aimlessness of youthful alienation. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide
