After suffering the humiliation of being given the third degree by his girlfriend's father, one man now faces the even more embarrassing task of introducing his own mother and father in this star-studded sequel to the box-office smash Meet the Parents. After getting off on the wrong foot (to put it mildly) with his prospective in-laws, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) has finally won the grudging approval of Jack and Dina Byrnes (Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner) to marry their daughter Pam (Teri Polo). But after clearing the first hurdle, now Greg has to face an even bigger challenge -- introducing the straight-laced Byrnes family to his folks, free-spirited sex therapist Roz (Barbra Streisand) and eccentrically open-minded Bernie, who blend with Pam's parents not quite as well as oil and water. Meet the Fockers was directed by Jay Roach, who handled the same chores for Meet the Parents. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"The Rage in Placid Lake is a beautiful, funny encouragement to lead a less structured life in order to achieve greater happiness. The titular character, so named by his anti-establishment parents in hopes of him living up to that image, is a human Gumby in the middle of a frantic social tug-of-war. Placid’s parents use him as a guinea pig for exercising their oddball societal beliefs. Their clueless experiments consistently transform Placid into a lamb to the slaughter, similar to Marcus in About A Boy. The continual adolescent opposition Placid faces as a result of his stark differences is personified by the brutal ostracism and fists of three bullies. These abusive classmates are the epitome of the Lake parents’ collective enemies and yet the adults continue to assume that their failed vicarious efforts are beneficial to their son. Poor, mangled, confused Placid. And then there is Gemma, Placid’s lifelong platonic female friend who has been the only rock in ... " [More]

"I watched this immediately after I watched Meet the Parents, which I'm glad about. All the standard sequel setups were no problem for me. I remembered all the inside jokes and film-specific gags without hesitation. I should watch film series like that more often. This movie was not as good as the first one. Yet, I liked it better. Allow me explain. Meet the Fockers followed the two standard sequel rules: 1) Recycle as much you can, and 2) More is Better. Many of the gags were repeated but to a higher degree, and then new jokes and gags were added. The movie, as a result, was less tight than its predecessor, lost focus at times (Little Jack? hello), and, in some ways, felt forced. Except! I liked this movie because of the brilliant casting choices of Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand as the title characters. They. Were. Hilarious. I cannot laud them enough. Gaylord "Greg" Focker has put off marrying Pam Byrnes for years since he first met her parents, mainly because he k ... " [More]

"Swingers's detail pageI thought I wouldn't like participating in this group at first because it get's frustrating complaining about movies, but I can't seem to hold myself back. Puhnner, you asked me to list some of my overrated movies, referring to my definition of overrated by ratio. Well I'm not sure if this is going by the same criteria, but I've come up with a list from another source. I also rate movies at the website movielens. It will give you recommendations based on your ratings and whatnot. It also gives some interesting statistics. For one, it tells me which movies I have rated the lowest compared to the average rating on their site. So I have looked at that list and picked several of them. The thing about this method is that I am not using what my impression of the ammount of acclaim a movie has received for the ratio but rather what the ammount of acclaim a website thinks a movie has based on the votes from it's users. The rare sequel that is far funnier than the box-office smash upon which it is based, Meet the Fockers (2004) is flat-out hilarious. Credit must be given to director Jay Roach and his team of writers for recognizing that the largely one-joke Meet the Parents (2000) coasted too much on the power of its high-concept premise and that any subsequent story would need to be more character-driven and superbly cast. It's a testament to their understanding of comedy that Robert De Niro's Jack Byrnes character is as much the protagonist of Fockers as Ben Stiller's shlubby Gaylord, which gives the story a little more comic elbow room, opening it up for the introduction of Roz and Bernie Focker. They're stereotypes to be sure, but character clichés are where the laughs and the fun are in this franchise. What is Jack if not the boiler-plate Republican father? What is Greg/Gaylord if not the next-generation Milquetoast boyfriend, and both Dina (Blythe Danner) and Pam (Teri Polo) if not the shiksa goddesses of the entire Woody Allen catalogue? Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand seem to be having a genuine ball as gooey-liberal Florida retiree foils, their energy kicking the rest of the cast up a notch. Even De Niro, who has been sleepwalking through some of his latter-career roles, is more engaged, particularly in his scenes with Hoffman and the twin infant actors portraying his grandson, "Little Jack." Meet the Fockers (2004) goes awry in a third act that shoehorns a pointless chase sequence and a star cameo into the mix, but it's over painlessly quickly and strikes the only false chords in what is otherwise a hysterically funny follow-up. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide
