Directed by Nora Ephron.
Nora Ephron directed and co-wrote this updated adaptation of a classic situation comedy that also casts a satirical eye on the entertainment industry. Jack Wyatt (Will Ferrell) is a movie star whose career has been going into a slow and steady decline. Desperate for a project that will give his reputation a jump start, Jack agrees to star in a film version of the once-popular television series Bewitched as hapless hubby Darrin Stephens, under the condition that an unknown actress be cast as the female lead so he won't be upstaged. After auditioning dozens of women who fail to make the grade, Jack meets lovely and charming Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman), and is immediately certain she's the perfect choice to play witch-turned-housewife Samantha. However, there's one thing neither Jack nor the producers of the film know -- Isabel really is a witch, and while she's been trying to get along without her powers to better fit in among mortals, she will use her special talents when need be. The film also stars Michael Caine as Isabel's father, Nigel, Shirley MacLaine as Iris Smythson (the actress hired to play Endora), and Jason Schwartzman as Jack's agent. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Nicole Kidman’s streak of high-profile disappointments looks like it’ll continue with The Invasion. Dennis Harvey’s review confirms the bad buzz: “Perhaps the sole distinguishing element in this Invasion is that it provides a new transmission oh-so-characteristic of our filmic era: projectile barfing.” Jennifer Aniston will join Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly and Kevin Connelly in He’s Just Not Into You, making the New Line project surely the most star-studded movie based on a self-help book ever made. Rosario Dawson is teaming with the creative team behind the hit animated sci-fi web video series Afterworld to star in and produce The Gemini Division, a 100-episode “live-action/motion-capture animation online sci-fi series.” Emerging Pictures is calling on students at historically black universities around the country to help promote Honeydripper, John Sayles’ upcoming musical starring Danny Glover. EP, in partnership with Clark Atlanta University, is creating a college course t ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski The big-screen version of Bewitched has the same moral as its predecessor: You can’t change who you are. This adage is, naturally, embodied by Isabel (Nicole Kidman), the real-life discontented witch who ends up playing Samantha, the fictional discontented witch in the movie’s remake-within-a-remake of the 1964 TV series. But let it also be a lesson to Will Ferrell, whose character is a bumbling but arrogant actor with whom Isabel falls in love—and yet another role that the beady-eyed comic was never meant to play. (Two more: Melinda and Melinda’s lovesick nebbish and Kicking & Screaming’s suburban patsy.) Ferrell’s Jack Wyatt may sound a bit like Ron Burgundy, the mustachioed Lothario whose affair with Christina Applegate’s newswoman in Anchorman was as entertainingly ridiculous as the cast’s wide lapels. But the self-absorbed Jack would never declare that he wants to be friends with Isabel’s heinie, a ... " [More]

"The only reason I watched this movie is because I happened to catch it right at the beginning (a rarety!) on Encore. Initially, I did want to see it, but then I heard about it and was convinced it probably sucked. The premise: Hollywood is remaking Bewitched the TV show. Will Ferrell plays Jack Wyatt, a washed up actor looking for a comeback. Nicole Kidman plays Isabelle Bigelow, a Samantha-like witch who, through her expert nose wiggling, gets discovered by Jack as the nobody to his would-be star vehicle to play Samantha. Trouble is, she's a witch looking for normalcy. Apparently, she's tired of getting everything she wants (we always want what we can't have). This movie didn't suck hard, but it wasn't great. I'll do something unusual and start with my rating, which is a square 5 for mediocre at its core. It was a little better than fair (rating 4) in that there were some funny girl power moments. Nicole Kidman was an awfully cute Samantha knock-off. Michael Caine was del ... " [More]

"Have you guys seen Bewitched? If I weren't buzzed, it would be twice as brutal. Shallow characters, horrible story line.. a true hollywood failure. I hope they don't try and do a Bewitched 2. I don't even like Nicole Kidman, but thought I'd give it a chance b/c I like Will. " [More]
