Directed by Gene Saks.
Based on the hit Broadway play by Neil Simon, who made his screenwriting debut with this adaptation, Barefoot In The Park follows the lives of newlyweds Paul (Robert Redford) and Corie Bratter (Jane Fonda) as they adjust to married life in a tiny Greenwich Village apartment. Paul is a buttoned-down, straight-arrow lawyer who's wound a little too tight, while Corie is an effervescent free spirit who won't let anything disturb her romantic bliss. Aside from the five-flight climb and the hole in their skylight, the Bratters must also contend with eccentric upstairs neighbor Victor Velasco (Charles Boyer), who must go through their apartment to get to his. Corie hatches a plot to get her mother (Mildred Natwick) together with Mr. Velasco, but the entire evening goes awry and even casts doubt on the viability of the Bratters' new marriage, as Corie tries unsuccessfully to loosen Paul up. All ends well, however, and Fonda and Redford are full of youthful appeal in this light domestic comedy. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

"Caught this one on TCM the other night (well, most of it, but I'd seen it before many years ago). It was much better than I remembered it, a lot of good Neil Simon dialog, and Richard Dreyfuss' Richard III is absolutely hilarious. The kid, as played by Quinn Cummings is really cute and appealling. Marsha Mason, though - boy did Neil Simon have a knack for writing annoying female characters (see also Barefoot in the Park, which I also recently saw), she spends the entire movie whining and complaining and its a wonder why Richard Dreyfuss falls for this neurotic mess. The ending is particularly disappointing, and I felt myself hoping the Richard Dreyfuss character would just leave for the west coast and never come back. " [More]

"Saw this one a couple weeks ago while we were waiting around for our teenage son to come home from a date. Had seen bits and pieces of it before, but never stuck with it for some reason. I was struck this time by what a good performance Robert Redford gives here, he really should have done a lot more comedy, he really had a knack for dry deadpan delivery, and of course, it doesn't hurt that his character gets all the funny lines. Jane Fonda is adequate, if a bit whiney, but she compensates by flashing a lot of leg throughout. Charles Boyer is appeallingly debonair in a caricature of his usual screen persona and Mildred Natwick is ok as the flustered Mother-in-law (although, what the Charles Boyer character sees in her is beyond me, she's constantly complaining about the least little obstacle).Fun Neil Simon adaptation - be sure to check out these others: The Odd Couple, The Goodbye Girl, Biloxi Blues, Brighton Beach Memoirs " [More]

The combined star power of leads Robert Redford and Jane Fonda elevate Barefoot in the Park above the level of standard Neil Simon fare. The matinee idols convincingly portray a young couple in their first few weeks of marriage: Fonda is well-suited to the part of the nubile free spirit, and Redford is amiably uptight as her lawyer husband. True to form, Simon populates the newlyweds' world with meddling parents, nutty neighbors, and the obligatory swipe at marital instability. Precious little happens in the G-rated feature; the threat of a sour ending is somewhat miniscule when the plot's most pressing conflict is sex kitten Fonda's fear that her husband doesn't love her anymore because he doesn't want to copulate all day. But director Gene Saks treats the material for what it is: a sunny vehicle for two engaging personalities. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide
