In this adaptation of Ian Fleming's 1955 novel, James Bond (Roger Moore) must thwart Sir Hugo Drax (Michel Lonsdale), who plans to wipe out all of humankind and replace it with a super race that he has cultivated in a massive space station. The girl in the case is American secret agent Holly Goodhead, intelligently played by Lois Chiles. "Jaws," the steel-mouthed henchman played by Richard Kiel in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), makes a return appearance in Moonraker, turning good guy (complete with a girlfriend of his own) in the process. Bernard Lee makes his last appearance as "M" in this most costly of James Bond's 1970s escapades. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"I haven't seen any signs of recent life on this board, but will throw out a suggestion... RANK THE BOND FILMS. Against each other, of course, not necessarily individual ratings. A friend of mine challenged me to re-watch them chronologically and as quickly as possible. We each made our own notes along the way and ranked them. The ranking below was created prior to DIE ANOTHER DAY, so I need to consider where it fits in. I will tell you exactly where CASINO ROYALE fits in (see below). This is all very subjective, but I'd be interested to see other's thoughts. For example, do you loathe YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE because of its finale or do you forgive that portion and rank it higher? "I have to admit, I have been away from the Bond franchise for some time. The last one I saw was 'Goldeneye', and while I thought it was a cut above the previous few entries, I was getting a little tired of the concept, thinking "how long can they keep milking this?" -- Well we had heard that this new Bond Daniel Craig was worth a look, so we ventured out to our local multiplex to check him out around December. Additionally, the 'Encore' channel started running all the old Bonds around the New Year (and if you got the 'on demand' option with your cable service, you could watch all of them at your leisure in widescreen no less!), so around here, we've been thoroughly drenched in Bond for the past few months. This weekend, we were snowed in and watched one of the more recent Pierce Brosnan entries, so with all this is mind, I thought I'd do an overview of the 007 pantheon (at least the ones I've seen, who knows how many times by now).I have to start ... Moonraker is quite simply one of the weirdest James Bond movies out there, as close to accidental spoof as anything in the series (not counting Casino Royale, which was supposed to be real spoof). Not only does it feature the larger-than-life, metal-toothed villain Jaws (Richard Kiel), performing even stranger feats than he did in The Spy Who Loved Me, but also a downright loopy foray into outer space, complete with an exchange of laser blasts better suited to the contemporaneous Star Wars movies. Of course, diversions from the straight and narrow in a long-running series like this are always welcome, and Moonraker has fun with its lighter tone and silly finale. Directing his third Bond film, Lewis Gilbert also knows how to provide the goods, including a taut sequence atop a tram that'll be a doozy for anyone afraid of heights. Of course, the fact that Jaws is severing the tram's thick support wire with his teeth just restores focus on the sense of kookiness that suffuses the whole enterprise.
