Many married couples have secrets, but one pair of lovebirds discover they've both been living dangerous secret lives in this action thriller laced with comedy. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and play Jane Smith and John Smith, a suburban couple whose marriage has started to go a bit stale after five or six years. Both wish for more excitement in their relationship, but as it happens, each of them is finding plenty of thrills elsewhere. Both Jane and John are world-class assassins who will take on perilous missions for the right price, but neither is aware of the other's secret life - Jane thinks her husband runs a successful construction company, and John believes his wife works on Wall Street. However, when John and Jane are both assigned to take out the same target, one Benjamin Danz (Adam Brody), they become aware of each other's secret lives, and suddenly both their careers and their marriage go through some dramatic and potentially deadly changes. Mr. and Mrs. Smith also stars Vince Vaughn as an assassin with John's company who still lives with his mother and Kerry Washington as one of Jane's associates. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"It’s not always worthwhile to jump on rumors like this, but the idea that Brad Pitt could be cast as The Mighty Thor in Marvel’s upcoming movie adaptation (due June 4, 2010) is too good an idea to be left alone. The word comes from Latino Review that Marvel is simply tossing the actor’s name around, though apparently the role hasn’t even been suggested, let alone offered, to Pitt. Unfortunately, it’s hard to imagine that Pitt would be interested in playing a superhero. He’s still a big enough star and a talented enough actor that he might feel he’s above such a thing. However, if he wants to continue making great films like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which don’t make him much cash, he’s going to need some mainstream hits, and he could do much worse for a paycheck than wear a cape and helmet and fight evil as the Norse God of Thunder. So, I’ve come up with five reasons for Pitt to grab Thor’s hammer. Hopefully he’ll find the list convincing. Lucrati ... " [More]

"A great marketing tagline for “Jumper” could have been: Jumper: It's “Highlander” for the myspace generation! Both feature leaps through space (and logic), centuries-old rivalries, and an acting vacuum for a lead (Christopher Lambert in 'Highlander,' Hayden Christensen in 'Jumper'), and both are a laughable assault on the intellect (but 'Jumper” lacks that groovin' Queen soundtrack). Jumper may also be notable for no other reason than Samuel L. Jackson managed to wear a more bizarre wig than his Gumby model he sported for “Unbreakable” a few years back. Frosted an unnatural shade of white, he resembles a pissed-off piece of Sno-Caps candy. Perhaps it was the chance to jet to exotic locales on the director's dime that enticed the actor to sign off on this mess, or maybe he was looking for a role that would allow him to slap former co-star Christensen around a bit in retribution for wrecking the last two &ldqu ... "I have been making the case for Doug Liman for years now. I’d even recently given up the claim that I completely despise Swingers (it’s mostly the neo-swing soundtrack I hate). I constantly argued that his The Bourne Identity was better than Greengrass’ The Bourne Supremacy — in the end Greengrass’ The Bourne Ultimatum turned out ultimately the best — and still continue promoting the genius of Mr. and Mrs. Smith (I watched it with a newbie just the other night, and that person was convinced). But now, I am on the fence about Jumper, which I haven’t yet seen and which arrived in theaters today. I can’t decide whether to bother seeing it. The movie certainly looks stupid. I’ll admit it. Yet this is where my Liman defending came about in the past year, especially recently, as its release got closer. Every time the trailer or TV ad came on the screen, someone would turn to me and say it looks really stupid. Or I would overhear a similar statement coming from the mouths of strangers. O ... "I almost hate to admit this, but I honestly liked this movie. Lots of action, kind of fun twist along the way. Brad and Angelina do a great job. A decent story line, not bad acting, and was kind of fun.The ending is a little extreme, but you should know that going into watching the movie. Definitely recommend renting this one. " [More]

"Giving credence to rumors that have been floating around for many weeks, IFC confirmed yesterday that they’re planning to move away from distributing moderate-budget festival acquisitions in order to concentrate more attention on their IFC FirstTake program. This can only be good news for VOD-loving indie film fans. FirstTake has brought some of the year’s best films to cable boxes, including Day Night Day Night, Lars Von Trier’s The Boss of it All, and current selection This is England; they already have plans to distribute highly-anticipated (by me, at least) festival holdovers such as Hannah Takes the Stairs and Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park. Can you imagine what they could do if they tried harder? Fox has struck a deal with what appears to be some kind of unofficial union called the Writing Partners, designed to lure top screenwriters to the studio by promising that the scribes will earn money off the gross if the movies get made.  This seems to be more thinly-veiled strike hyst ... "By Tricia Olszewski The couple in Mr. & Mrs. Smith could be any of us, really. Well, set aside the fact that they’re assassins. And that they look like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Besides that, John and Jane Smith are pretty typical: They feel trapped in a joyless marriage. They barely hide their mutual resentment, whether discussing the drapes or correcting each other during a therapy session. They always eat at 7, usually silently, with sporadic strained conversation centering on what Jane has added to a same-old dish. Even if the pair weren’t trying to off one another, John’s observation to his wife would still ring true: “You obviously want me dead, and I’m becoming less and less concerned about your welfare.” See, the fabulous John and Jane, living luxuriously in suburbia and working for rival organizations (how many assassination agencies are there, exactly?), have long kept their true occupations hidden but now have, well, a profes ... "Yes, I hope those children will be extremely fortunate and grow up with a lot of love (either from them or their nannies...lol). It seems they really love their children and the kids always seem happy when you see pictures of them, so I hope they will grow up well adjusted. You know, I have to say my favorite Angelina Jolie movie is Original Sin with Antonio Bandares (it might have been because of him) but I really thought it was a good movie. Lara Kroft Tomb Raider was a pretty fun movie as well as Mr. and Mrs. Smith too.Brad Pitt - sigh, I just love looking at him. I think he was good in Meet Joe Black and of course A River Runs Through it... " [More]

"Sometimes I find single songs that I really like in movies. I love the song "Mondo Bongo" by Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros from Mr. and Mrs. Smith. There are probably more, but I can't think of them right now. Here are some soundtracks that I did like enough to buy...Titanic - And not just the one song, all of the other songs are just instrumental and they are deep and sad and pretty.Forest Gump - It really is a good mix of a lot of good songs.Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? - This is so unique and all of the songs are catchy and go together. Empire Records - This was a favorite of mine when I was in highschool. I can't say I listen to it much anymore, but it was an interesting mix of songs and brings back memories of highschool.Top Gun - "Take My Breath Away" was my favorite song for a long time, but all of them are so eighties and classic that the soundtrack has a very distinct feel to it. Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a first-rate piece of Hollywood blockbuster craftsmanship. Slick in the best sense of the word, the film seems effortless. By underplaying, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie consistently get laughs during the lengthy opening act of the film that establishes their stifling marriage. Director Doug Liman establishes their cold, ornate suburban home without lingering on it, allowing the surroundings to have the same suffocating effect on the viewer that it does on the characters. The film is not exactly deep, but it does offer more depth than most films like it. Liman and company have taken time to make the audience care about the characters, and provided enough thematic subtext about the nature of marriage. Because of this, the flamboyant action sequences have an extra kick. The car chases and shoot-outs generate excitement and laughs without ever sacrificing clarity. The expert editing not only allows the viewer to understand where everybody is and why each person acts the way they do, but also allows the comedic moments to register without slowing down the action. In the skillful hands of Doug Liman, a director who knows how to stage action scenes and comedy with equal aplomb, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers something more than just another piece of Hollywood product without sacrificing any of the fun. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
