Directed by Fred Dekker.
A group of adolescent monster movie enthusiasts form a club that meets in a treehouse in this pre-teen horror feature. When Dracula, The Mummy, Frankenstein, and The Wolfman are joined by Gill-Man in the search for a magic amulet, the boys form the Monster Squad to battle the forces of evil. The boys get unexpected help from Frankenstein when the monster grows tired of being continually bossed around by Dracula. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

"The Monster Squad was one of my most favoritest movies when I was young. When the DVD was released, I had a fear of revisiting. What if it wasn't what I remembered? What if all my childhood dreams were crushed just like when I rewatched that Alice in Wonderland TV miniseries recently. I didn't think I could bear it.Luckily, The Monster Squad still rules. It has everything I could possibly want. Humor, monsters, children who have to save the world while their parents have no idea what is happening. The film is rated PG-13 which is mostly for language and some violence. Otherwise this would be a perfect family movie. Some of it is cheesy. But most of the effects hold up really well. Make-up almost always works better than CG. I recommend this to everyone, especially if you love monster movies.Winter Passing stars Zooey Deschanel ("Bride to Terabithia") as the estranged daughter of two great writers. She returns home to find some love letters that her father (Ed Harr ... " [More]

"The answer is YES...Now I MAY be a bit biased (considering that the hours i spent watching this little gem throughout my childhood probably could total to a couple of weeks) but frankly I don't give a damn, this is a classic. I mean think about it, you've got a typical 80's film (it even has a KILLER montage to the tune of "Rock Until You Drop") with the typical non-politically correct cast of preteens...you've got tons of monster archetypes...you've got Tom Noonan in one of his best roles ever (the loveable heart-warming Frankenstein's Monster)...and best of all you've got a (light-brown-haired) Dracula calling a 4 year old girl a bitch and then hissing at her...what more could you want?I just found out that this film (the absolute MOST deserving B-Movie out there) has finally gotten a proper DVD release. Now I will not be forced to deal with my crappy bootleg copy any longer. If you will excuse me, I have a DVD to purchase, and so do you...THE END.P ... " [More]

"This reminds me of an Honorable Mention for my own list: Harry and the Hendersons.I couldn't agree more. My daughter is 9 months old and already I'm collecting movies for her to watch later. This is one of them (along with Fraggle Rock).Loved both of these. Which reminds me of others for the Honorable Mentions list: Princess Bride and The Monster Squad. " [More]

is neutral about it.
The horror comedy is usually a contradiction in terms but The Monster Squad is a rare successful example of the format. The secret of its success is Shane Black and Fred Dekker's script, which blends homage and lampoon in a way that sees humor in the horror genre without ever disrespecting it. Dekker carries that approach over to his work as the film's director, giving the film a light-hearted 'pop' feel during the segments dealing with the young heroes but creating a convincingly spooky atmosphere for the monster sequences. His work in both areas is aided tremendously by slick cinematography from Bradford May and a rousing orchestral score from Bruce Broughton that hits all the right emotional notes. It's also worth noting that Dekker maintains a tight pace throughout and weaves in some unexpectedly affecting moments of pathos between the scares and laughs. Finally, it's the acting that completes the film's crowd-pleaser appeal: everyone acquits themselves well but the real scene-stealers are Duncan Regehr's regal yet nasty turn as Dracula, Tom Noonan's appealingly childlike take on Frankenstein and Leonardo Cimino's subtle and dignified work as Scary German Guy, the one adult who immediately understands what the kids are up against. In short, The Monster Squad is a smart, fast-paced delight that horror fans of all ages can enjoy and appealing enough to cross over to viewers who aren't genre fans. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
