Directed by Anand Tucker.
Steve Martin wrote the screenplay and served as co-producer for this screen adaptation of his short novel, which takes a witty but bittersweet look at a young woman and the two men involved with her. Mirabelle Buttersfield (Claire Danes) is an aspiring artist in her mid-twenties who, after graduating from college, moved to Los Angeles, where she works at the glove counter of an upscale department store. Mirabelle's job is simple and not demanding, but it doesn't pay especially well, and she finds herself struggling to get out from under a growing mountain of debt from student loans and credit cards. One night, while doing her laundry, Mirabelle meets Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman), a scruffy but likable would-be musician who makes ends meet selling guitar amps. While Jeremy is obviously infatuated with Mirabelle, she isn't sure how she feels about him, especially after she meets Ray Porter (Steve Martin), a man in his fifties whom she meets at the store. Ray is independently wealthy, intelligent, and charming, and after asking her out on a date he sweeps her off her feet. However, while Mirabelle quickly falls for Ray and he's generous to a fault with her, he refuses to commit exclusively to her and suggests they should both see other people, a prospect that no longer holds much appeal for her. Shopgirl received its world premiere at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Shopgirl was my Netflix movie of the week, a romance to commemorate the annual week of romance (this message brought to you by Hallmark). I digress. I had no expectations or preconceived notions about this movie; I only knew that it was based on a novella written by star Steve Martin, whom I adore, and who also wrote the screenplay. Also, I generally love Claire Danes and Jason Schwartzman, the other stars of this film, which, along with Martin, were the reasons my interest was piqued. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to maintain my interest in this film, which had potential, but which left me feeling about as blank, empty, and numb about a film as I can be left to feel - and all without preconceived notions, as I mentioned previously.Danes plays Mirabelle Buttersfield, a transplant to Los Angeles from Vermont. She is an aspiring artist plagued by mountains of debt and. the viewer comes to learn, medicated depression, and she earns her meager living by working behind the glove ... " [More]

"I was kind of disappointed with this film. I had read the Steve Martin's book and was drawn to Mirabelle's problems but in the film her depression is barely mentioned. Sure, it was mentioned but it didn't make the same impact on her life and her decisions as it did in the book. There was a sense of disconnect in the film from all of the characters that caused me to not really care about what happened to any of them. Maybe I'm bias though, since i loved the book so much, so overall, w/out my bias, it was a pretty alright film...plus Jason Schwartzman's in it.... " [More]

"I didn't really like this movie, and no, it's not because I'm squeamish about old guys like Steve Martin getting naked. The main reason why this movie didn't work for me was because of the watch scene. For those who haven't seen the movie, there is a scene where Steve Martin takes off Claire Daines's watch, puts his hand around her wrist, and says something like, "I'll be your watch." At the showing, a good number of people actually burst out laughing, including myself.Aside from that, I don't like either one of the men that she's with. One is a pennyless loser who tries to use a plastic bag as a condom, and the other is a rich perv who can't find a woman his own age. Even when the loser cleans himself up and puts on a suit, I still don't think he's sympathetic enough that I should cheer when he gets the girl.I like unusual movies, especially unusual romances, but this movie didn't do it for me. Sorry to all the acto ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Shopgirl, based on the novella by Steve Martin, will inevitably be viewed as Martin’s Lost in Translation. It’s a story about disconnected people tentatively coming together. It’s quiet and understated. And the majority of its plot is focused on the relationship between a 20-ish woman and a middle-aged man. Both erstwhile comics went serious for their roles, but Martin, it turns out, is no Bill Murray. His 50-year-old Ray Porter pursues Mirabelle (Claire Danes), a clerk in charge of the dress-glove department at Saks Fifth Avenue, for purely sexual reasons. And though Ray’s wooing, aided by his wealth, is relatively tasteful and restrained—he sends Mirabelle the long velvet gloves he bought from her, then invites her to dinner at a posh restaurant—the look in his eyes often is not. Martin’s white-haired Ray may present himself as high-class and even tender, but there are moments when he’s with the wide-eyed Mirab ... " [More]

"A lot of talent went into this film, but despite being an interesting study of characters and beautiful to look at, it wasn't particularly engaging. I had a hard time caring about either Mirabelle or Ray; neither struck me as really likeable. It was Jason Schwartzman's Jeremy who brought warmth and interest to the story. I kept hoping he and Mirabelle would end up together, if only for his sake, but I wished for him someone who'd appreciate him more. " [More]

"Shopgirl (2005) is the film version of Steve Martin’s novella, Shopgirl. It is not a comedy. Numerous critics trashed the movie because it was not a romantic comedy. This is like criticizing Macbeth for its dirth of hilarity. It was never meant to be funny. The movie is the sad story of a desparately lonely small-town girl (Claire Danes) in Los Angeles. She attempts a romance with a young, eccentric, and egocentric artist (Jason Schwartzman). It is odd and a pathetic. Fortunately, he goes on the road with his favourite rock band, only to discover that instead of listening to screaming anthems, they are into meditation tapes and personal growth DVDs.Meanwhile, a 50-year old, single, millionaire (Steve Martin) spots the shopgirl behind her counter at Saks. She slowly falls in love with him, but he remains a bit distant, until she asks in bewilderment, “Why don’t you love me?” He has no ready answer. Meanwhile, the eccentric artist has learned something on the ... " [More]

Claire Danes gives an interesting performance in Shopgirl. Her character is looking for happiness and fulfillment, but she suffers from depression and takes medication that flattens out her moods. Her Mirabelle Buttersfield has a pretty good clue as to what she wants out of life, she is simply having trouble finding it. Ray Porter, the older man who romances her, sees her as a delicate, elegant, fragile creature. Those adjectives are all accurate descriptions of her, but they certainly do not describe her completely. Steve Martin imbues Ray with an inherent coldness that never thaws, even as he gets himself more involved with her than he ever intended to. One of the best aspects of the film is the cinematography by regular David Cronenberg DP Peter Suschitzky. The stylish look of the film also has a fragile beauty that encourages the audience to see Mirabelle exactly as Ray does, something that makes her performance all the more interesting. The audience begins to see more in her than Ray does. The love triangle involving the two of them and Jason Schwartzman's twentysomething Jeremy plays out with a simple straightforwardness that suffers mostly because one of these three characters does not grow up -- anyone should figure out early on who will end up with whom. The film moves at a deliberate pace that allows the viewer to understand and appreciate Mirabelle's many wonderful qualities, but neither of the men seem particularly worthy of her even if one does become an obviously better choice. As a romance, Shopgirl comes up short, but as a portrait of a young woman at an early crossroads in her life, the film offers a mix of emotional truth and nonjudgmental observation that makes it a worthy character study. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
