Directed by Joe Ranft, John Lasseter.
A pedal-to-the-metal race car determined to prove his worth on the tracks discovers that life isn't always about crossing the finish line first in Toy Story director John Lasseter's mechanically minded tale of friendship and loyalty. Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) may be just a rookie, but he's convinced that he can realize his dream of zooming by the checkered flag if he can only make it to California in time to compete in the upcoming Piston Cup Championship. When Lightning takes a detour into the slow-moving, Route 66 town of Radiator Springs, however, it begins to appear as if his shot at the big time has effectively stalled out. Of course, Lightning's exciting cross-country trek wasn't all for naught, and after befriending such quirky Radiator Springs residents as Sally the Porsche (voice of Bonnie Hunt), Doc Hudson (voice of Paul Newman), and Mater the Tow Truck (voice of Larry the Cable Guy), the eager young racer learns that sometimes life is more about the voyage than the outcome of the race. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"By this time the novelty of computer animated films is completly gone, never to return. There was a time when every new CGI film (Toy Story, Shreck, A Bug's Life, Antz) was greeted with wide acclaim and enthusiam. In addition to being entertaining for young and old alike, there was just something cool about seeing something other than traditional cell animation. But now the days when the visuals of these films alone provided thrills is over, and the market is now being flooded with product (I think there were something like five CGI films released this year alone). Even Pixar, the standard for quality in the business, is begining to loose its luster. After a string of great films, culminating with the masterpiece Finding Nemo, which features more real drama between its animated fish than most films with human characters, the studio the good but not great The Incredibles. This year's Cars shows that the well has dried up. They need to go back the drawing board and come up w ... " [More]

"To see this movie is to know, instantly, why Disney was willing to spend lots and lots and lots of money to buy Pixar. Cars is another absolute winner in the in the Pixar stable (feather in the cap? trophy in the case? pick your cliché). Suffice it to say that adults will not be bored or disappointed and kids will love the film. I can't think of a single demographic that won't enjoy Cars. Oh, and for the tech geeks out there, most of the animation was about as good as animation has ever been. " [More]

"What do Richard Petty, Owen Wilson, & Paul Newman have in common? They're all in Walt Disney and Pixar's latest film 'Cars'. The story revolves around a rookie race car learning that life isn't about where you're going, but how you get there. Now I'll admit, last fall when I first heard about this movie I completely wrote it off as being utterly preposterous. Why? Simply because the idea of talking cars didn't seem entertaining in the least. It actually wasn't until the day before its release I said, wow, I think Disney's got something here. (Which only proved to be true after seeing it the next day.) John Lassester, the man who took us into the world of toys in 'Toy Story' and on a search for a young clown fish in 'Finding Nemo' has done it once again. First off, there's Lightning McQueen's (Owen Wilson) funny and irresistibly lovable new best friend, Mater. (Larry the Cable Guy) He adds to 'Cars' what Scr ... " [More]

"Loved this one. I watched this movie the same night I watched Talladega nights. I have to say this one won the race hands down. I love the Pixar films, and this one is a keeper. I will own this one, not just for the kids but for myself. " [More]

"My more detailed thoughts are, well, detailed in the Fantasy group. Truthfully, I belong to several groups that could discuss this movie (the CGI group, the Disney group, etc.). I wanted to add that I think Pixar is such a great animation studio. The writing is always superb, and the attention to detail is always astonishing. A world peopled by people-like cars is more fun than I thought it would be. My rating: a solid 9 out of 10 (which means not perfect but close and/or perfectly entertaining). The test: will she be buying it? The answer: a wholehearted yes. First, I have to have a current Pixar collection, and I own all of the other ones. Second, this would totally withstand repeat viewing, if for no other reason than the oodles of cameos from Pixar characters past in the credit gags makes the credit gags one of the best of the series. Third, it's just a solidly good movie and loads of fun. Go see it. " [More]

"I saw Cars tonight, a week late, but whatever. First, I should mention that I'm a Pixar geek. I love each and every Pixar movie. I love all of the little gimmicks and things that are trademarks to the franchise: the shorts that come before each movie, the logo, the voice talents, the imaginary worlds, the state of the art CGI animation, and the credit gags. Still, I was less excited for Cars than, say, Finding Nemo or The Incredibles just because it was a movie all about, well, cars. I'm not a car fan, in general. Cars are necessary to drive, but I was leery of watching a movie about cars with personalities. I imagined a wide variety of puns were in my future and wasn't sure this film was going to live up to its predecessors. I'm an avid reader of movie reviews. I like to get a wide spectrum of opinions from different types of viewers before I make a decision about seeing movies, except movies I really want to see. I read the review from the New York Times for Cars, which b ... " [More]

is neutral about it.
After a solid opening sequence that establishes the selfish nature of race car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), Cars takes what feels like an inordinate amount of time to strand him in the deserted town where he can learn lessons about selflessness. Once there, the situation and the dynamics of the characters are overly familiar from any number of films, from An Officer and a Gentleman to Mr. 3000. This is a surprising problem coming from Pixar, a studio responsible for beautiful scripts like Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2. Thankfully, the artistry of the Pixar animators has not diminished whatsoever. The reflections and shadows of the cars, the quality of the air in a Western town, and the details of Lightning's makeover from race car to '50s cruising machine offer just some of the visual splendors that are abundant throughout the movie. The problem is that with every other Pixar film the beautiful attention to detail usually does not register in full on the first viewing because the characters are so emotionally engaging. Because Cars fails to fully grab one's heart, it is easier to admire the scenery. This film certainly supplies a fine moviegoing experience, but it does feel like a disappointment considering what has come before. Pixar usually puts out breathtaking Porsches, but Cars is a dependable Honda. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
