A group of feisty forest critters awaken following the winter freeze to discover that not only has a new neighborhood cropped up during the cold months, but living in close proximity to humans may have its benefits in this computer-animated comedy-adventure for all ages featuring the voices of Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes, Avril Lavigne, Eugene Levy, and William Shatner. Despite Verne the Turtle's (Garry Shandling) initial hesitance to breach the formidable foliage that has appeared on his doorstep since last fall, the arrival of fearless raccoon RJ (Willis) and revelation that their new human neighbors throw out enough food in one day to feed a whole forest lead the gang to consider taking the plunge and exploring the snack-filled suburbs. As Verne and RJ learn to work together in taking on their strange new surroundings, Stella the Skunk (Sykes), Hammy the Squirrel (Carrel), Heather the Opossum (Lavigne), and Heather's father, Ozzie (Shatner), join in on the fun by scavenging for Girl Scout cookies and attempting to scuttle past the pesky new suburbanites undetected. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Who would've thought Bruce Willis would be playing a troubled NYPD officer and a mischievous raccoon both in the same year? Well he has, and done both quite well. Bruce Willis, along with Eugene Levy, Nick Nolte, Wanda Sykes, & many others appear in the all-new Dreamworks animation, 'Over the Hedge'. Which is brought to us by the director of 1998's 'Antz', Tim Johnson, and the producer of last year's hit 'Madagascar' and the writer of the upcoming 'Charlotte's Web', Karey Kirkpatrick. In 'Over the Hedge' we are taken into what is left of some woodland creature's home, now invaded by suburban life and surrounded by an encompassing hedge. They now have a dilemma. Where are they going to find food? That's where Bruce Willis' character, RJ the raccoon comes in. He explains to them on the other side of the hedge that there are plenty of delicious varieties of food. Including Hammy the squirrel's (Steve Carell) ... " [More]

"7/10 Enjoyable animated madness When raccoon RJ accidentally destroys bear Vincent’s entire food supply, Vincent gives him one week to recollect the food, or else... RJ sees a chance to fulfill his mission (and save his life) when he meets a group of forest animals led by turtle Verne, whose food supply has just been cut off by a suburban neighborhood surrounding a tiny remaining speck of forest. RJ decides to take them over the hedge and into suburbia to discover the wonders of nachos, cookies and energy boosters. I didn’t like Dreamworks Animation’s last few efforts, as I thought Shark Tale and Shrek 2 were almost insulting and completely uninspired with their total reliance on pop-culture references and I found Madagascar simply unfunny with mediocre animation. Over the Hedge is Dreamworks’ latest animated comedy adventure and one I thoroughy enjoyed. As per usual with contemporary animation the cast is almost entirely made up of celebrities lending their voices to the character ... " [More]

Howard Hawks once said that a great movie is four good scenes and no bad ones. Over the Hedge is halfway there -- it has two good scenes and no bad ones. The two extended sequences that fire on all cylinders are good enough to make the film worthwhile. The first of these sequences, involving Bruce Willis' raccoon explaining how suburbanites live their whole lives around junk food, strikes the perfect balance of social satire and savvy filmmaking. However the pièce de résistance is a two-minute bit where Steve Carell's hyperactive squirrel downs a caffeinated drink. The filmmakers have set up how they decide to portray this situation with such skill that the entire time it plays out any audience member should not be able to keep from laughing and laughing hard. Every time Carell's character opens his mouth, the results are comic gold, and Willis as well as William Shatner deliver smart performances that walk the line of being self-aware without being condescending. SCTV fans will savor Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara playing porcupines with heavy Canadian accents. The animals are all drawn with big expressive eyes, making it easy to find them cute and adorable, even if the film has no interest in building a strong emotional arc for anyone other than Willis' raccoon. Over the Hedge is a solid family film that will not remind anyone of the Pixar films, but is far better than many feeble contemporary animated animal movies such as Shark Tale. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
