Directed by Fabrice Cazeneuve.
Fabrice Cazeneuve's coming-out comedy drama You'll Get Over It (Tu Verras, Ca Te Passeras) was originally aired on television in France. Teenage Vincent (Julien Baumgartner) is the golden boy of his high school and family. He's on the swim team, has an adoring girlfriend in Noemie (Julie Maraval), and a loyal best friend in Stephane (Francois Comar). However, he secretly sees an older Bruno (Nils Ohlund) for discreet sexual encounters. When the new kid at school, Benjamin (Jeremie Elkaim), tries to pick him up, everyone finds out his secret. His previously supportive network begins to falter, while his mean older brother Regis (Antoine Michel) eggs them on. You'll Get Over It was screened at the 2003 San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

"SYNOPSIS: Everything is coming up roses for 17 year old Vincent. He's the star of his high school's swim team, has two best mates (one boy and one girl), is an excellent student and is the apple of his parents eye. Things become complex, however, shortly after he has sex for the first time with his female friend and a new boy moves into the city. During one fleeting afternoon when they meet, Vincent kisses Benjamin who inadvertently lets that slip out on the street. Soon, everyone is rallying against Vincent, including his former friends and his family. If this sounds at all interesting, ANALYSIS: Anytime I hear the words "coming of age story", I cringe. Not because the coming of age story is a bad one; it's just that these type of stories always begin a certain way, tell the same exact story and end in the same predictable way. And when you tack on "gay" ... " [More]

"You’ll Get Over It is melodrama redeemed by subtlety and adept acting. The script, written by Vincent Molina, is intelligent and truthful, and if it never exactly transports us to the higher realms, it has a grace and precision that carries the story without resorting to the usual, overwrought tactics you might expect from a film dealing with teenagers and homophobia. The pace is fairly quick, there are silences, but for the most part the information comes fast and steady, and the dry delivery is just right, I’m thinking, for what must certainly qualify as “loaded material.“ It’s always a pleasure (and far too rare) when a movie assumes we’re smart enough to get certain details without having them spelled out for us; there aren’t a lot of tears, but the pain comes through. We see it in Vincent’s red, swollen eyes, the way he huddles alone in bed in contrast to his mom and dad, his two best friends (Stephane and Noemie) making love. Th ... " [More]
