Directed by Wang Xiaoshuai
Set in a coastal town from which illegal immigrants often leave for the dangerous passage to America, Chinese Sixth Generation filmmaker Wang Xiaoshuai's film tells the story of a man who once braved that very trip, but was forced to return home. While in the United States, Er Di fathered a child with his employer's daughter, and was deported when her parents, who also came from the coastal town where the film is set, found out. Er Di leads a listless life, carrying on a secret affair with a worldly actress from the visiting Shanghai Opera, until he learns that his boss' family, along with his son, are returning. ~ Tom Vick, All Movie Guide

"Spoiler Alert: If you want the ending of Summer Palace to be a surprise, read no further. After watching two hours and twenty minutes of cigarette smoking in yet another Asian movie (see also my comments on the subject in my review of Drifters), I finally bestirred myself long enough to fish up the following news bites:"Guiyang, China — Here's some exciting medical news from the Chinese government: Smoking is great for your health. Cigarettes, according to China's tobacco authorities, are " [More]

"aka Er Di (2003)***SPOILERS*** ...but if you’re planning to watch this film for its narrative arc or for the final resolution of its principal plot points, I wouldn't recommend it to you in the first place. In the backstory, a young man ("Er Di" or "Little Brother") tries to immigrate illegally to the U.S., fails twice, finally succeeds as a stowaway, meets a young woman in America, and fathers a child. After several years, he is reported to the INS by the young wom " [More]

"What's a studio to do when a film made in a foreign country requires a new title for domestic distribution? In this case, 'Drifters' is an English-language title for 'Er Di,' the nickname for the main character of the film. Translated for DVD, the character's name is "Younger Brother," which is actually a much more appropriate title. Most of the characters have similarly simplistic yet evocative names - Little Girl, Big Brother, Old Man, Son. In fact, it's that last " [More]

"Drifters Er Di is the town 'celebrity'. But only for the none-too-exceptional feat that he had been a stowaway, and a multiple failure at that. One time he succeeded and managed to live abroad for a number of years before he got caught and was repatriated. Back in his hometown he spends his days as a slacker, busy doing nothing. There is just one person on his mind: Xiao Nu from a travelling Shanghai opera troupe, another lonely soul leading a listless life. Something of a romance " [More]

Beautifully filmed in a succession of perfectly composed scenes, Wang Xiaoshuai's Drifters enriches its minimal plot with deep reserves of emotion. The film's pace reflects the slow, melancholy aimlessness of its hero's life. Like many directors of his generation, Wang is concerned with the changes effecting contemporary China. Throughout the film, radio and television reports narrate China's acceptance into the World Trade Organization. These reports function as a backdrop to Er Di's predicament. Poor and desperate to see his son, he is at the mercy of the much wealthier family for whom he once worked, and their refusal to let him spend time with the boy leads him further into desperation. Gentle but powerful, the film concludes by sending its hero into an uncertain future. ~ Tom Vick, All Movie Guide
