Directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi.
The Euro-electro-pop of Daft Punk is married to an epic sci-fi story line in this ambitious anime project conceived by the band, Manga legend Leiji Matsumoto, and director Kazuhisa Takenouchi. Interstella 5555: The 5tory of The 5ecret 5tar System involves the plight of talented musicians from a neighboring galaxy who are brought to earth by an evil corporation. Stripped of their immense talents, they are turned into a band of emotionless, hit-churning automatons named The Crescendolls. As they play arena after arena in increasingly glitzy fashion, the plucky popsters fight to regain their identities to bring the world the sort of tunes they know they can deliver. Told entirely without dialogue, Interstella 5555 features Daft Punk's album Discovery in its entirety. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

"Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem is a visual interpretation of Daft Punk's album, Discovery. This film restored my belief in the value of animated features, given the more 'realistic' look of CGI animation. But its Daft Punk, and being grounded in some defined sense of reality has never been their deal. Each of the album's 14 tracks has been set to animation, telling the story of a nefarious music manager who kidnaps a 4-member pop band and brings them to earth with the intention of making them "the next big thing." Because there is no dialogue and few sound effects, it is the music that animates the characters and drives the story. In a traditional feature, the music adds depth and offers audio cues of what's to come. In Interstella 5555, the music is the story. This is definitely a film you have to experience. " [More]
