Directed by Uwe Boll.
An otherworldly investigator learns of a secret which could mean the end of civilization as we know it in this thriller based on the popular video game Alone in the Dark. Edward Carnby (Christian Slater) is a detective with Bureau 713, a secret investigative team affiliated with the United States government that explores supernatural and paranormal events. One of Carnby's assignments leads him to discover the secrets of the Abskani, an ancient tribe that worshiped demonic forces which gave them incredible powers. Carnby's findings suggest that the Abskani are poised to return to take over the world, and only one person has the knowledge to stop them -- archeologist Aline Cedrac (Tara Reid), who happens to be Carnby's former girlfriend. But Carnby's psyche has been tainted by his encounter with the Abskani demons, and he must now fight against their attempts to take over his mind as well as their attempts to conquer the Earth. Alone in the Dark also stars Stephen Dorff, Will Sanderson, and Françoise Yip. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Ok.... I don't think ANYONE should be 'banned' from making movies, no matter how bad they suck... I have seen 'House Of The Dead' and it truly sucks... this is probably the WORST movie I have ever seen! (and that is saying a LOT!) ... but it is STILL a Horror Movie and it is better than the best romantic comedy... So where does that leave us... I hate it because it is terrible and yet I still love it... " [More]

"I think it's a rather moot point. There are always going to be "good" directors and "bad" directors, "good" screenplays and "bad" screenplays, et. al. It may not be any kind of majority, but some people do like his films and I think he serves a purpose (however inane it may be).Personally, I had wanted to see Bloodrayne when I found out that Guinevere Turner was scripting it (I liked Go Fish and The Notorious Bettie Page and loved American Pyscho) and was completely horrified when I had seen the final product. Interestingly, I was able to talk with Guinevere in L.A. through a friend of mine that was friends with her friends or some weird six degrees of separation like that. Anyways, I wanted to talk to her about Bloodrayne and when I barely finished speaking the word she rolled her eyes and made a look of disgust on her face that pretty much explained everything. She briefly mentioned fighting with Boll and his people over the script and how most of it was taken out of her hand ... " [More]

"I was just reading on the SpoutBlog (here's the link to the article) about director Uwe Boll. If you haven't heard of him, he's the guy who directed such gems as House of the Dead and Bloodrayne. Apparently, there is a petition out to stop Boll from making any more movies. But, Boll said that it would take a million signatures to get him to stop filmmaking. The petition now has about 60,000 blog signatures.Okay. The SpoutBlog makes a good point that if you aren't going to see the movies anyway, why should you bother saying they suck in the first place? Well, here's a good reason: if you've seen House of the Dead, you know that it sucks. Really. Really. Hard. It sucks SO much, that when I, personally, heard that Boll directed Bloodrayne, I crossed it off my "to see" list. He also directed Alone in the Dark which, wasn't necessarily horrible, but it weren't good neither. All the movies he makes, by the way, are usually based on v ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski There are dumb movies. Then there are dumb movies based on video games. And then there’s Alone in the Dark. Now, Hollywood packages plenty of product for the mouth-breathers of the world, but director Uwe Boll takes extra care to avoid having any of his Atari-playin’ viewers get too confused. So things are kicked off with a paragraphs-long backstory on an ancient civilization of supercreatures called the Abkani and their “savage experiments on orphaned children.” The scrolled history could be described as Star Wars–like—except a booming voice recites it, just in case anyone in the audience, y’know, can’t read too good. And in case anyone didn’t read or listen, a way-too-informed security guard at a history museum will reiterate who the Abkani are later—and also oh-so-casually mention that the faux-nerdy woman in glasses (Tara Reid) is the assistant curator of the museum, and that, gosh, this fresh deli ... "The majority, I'll bet, just on the off chance I'll bet, hate this movie and the very breaths that Uwe Boll takes just because it's the hip thing, the in deal to despise his very guts. Not unlike Vanilla Ice and Kevin Federline, I think simply that people loathe them purely because it's the trend, it's what's cool. Now, I have no particular love for the latter two and I'm generally mid-line about Mr. Boll, but I thought this was a cool flick with cool monsters and several cool deaths.Even if you didn't care for it or if you think, as I've actually heard, that Mr. Boll is the Anti-Christ himself, you still might like: http://bloodgutsandgore.com " [More]
