Directed by Ethan Coen, Joel Coen.
One of the best-loved films from the idiosyncratic British film studio Ealing Pictures gets an update from the equally idiosyncratic filmmaking team of Joel and Ethan Coen in this offbeat comedy. Marva Munson (Irma P. Hall) is a spry, elderly woman who attends church regularly, doesn't care for loud noises or harsh language, and is looking for a tenant for the spare room in her house. Enter Goldthwait Higginson Dorr (Tom Hanks), a silver-tongued college professor who moves in and gains Munson's permission to use the basement for rehearsals with his "medieval music ensemble." What Munson doesn't know is that Dorr's latest project is not academic, but criminal. Dorr is masterminding the robbery of a riverboat casino, and the fellow musicians in his ensemble are actually the crew he's assembled to pull off the job: foul-mouthed "inside man" Gawain (Marlon Wayans), clumsy demolitions expert Pancake (J.K. Simmons), quiet strong-arm man Lump (Ryan Hurst), and logistical expert The General (Tzi Ma). Despite the best efforts of Dorr and his cohorts (which aren't very impressive), Munson finds out about their scheme, and when she refuses to accept a share of the take in exchange for her silence, Dorr decides the best solution is to silence her permanently. The gospel tunes which grace the soundtrack to The Ladykillers were coordinated by T-Bone Burnett, who also helped assemble the acclaimed song score for the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou?. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"The Ladykillers is the Cohen Brothers worst film. Its even worse than original movie. While the first film was a boring collection of unfunny situations, the remake is an awful collection of unfunny situations that eventfully gets boring. Although the setting is changed from England to the American South, the basic story is the same: a bunch of criminals hide out in the house of an eccentric old lady (here played by Irma P. Hall) while they plot a robbery. What has changed however, is the tone: the original had a classic British understatement to it, here the Cohens are going for an all out farce. The problem is that what is presented is so disconnected from reality that theres nothing to care about. The first film was not a good movie, but its characters, (particularly Peter Sellers) were appealing. Every character in this film is such a cartoon that it gets grating watching them. The Cohens are going for a Dr. Strangelove style of humor where absurd things are presented seriously ... " [More]

"Yeah sometimes I think there may be the challenge of the exercise to it.The Coen brother remade The Ladykillers, but they said they didn't even rewatch it before they started working on it (who knows if that's true). But they totally redit it to put it in the American south. I always thought they were fundamentally American. And the characters are totally different. And the whole idea of some big job or a hiest gone wrong is pretty much right in line with the work they had done up to that point already. They also plugged in elements of other older movies like Sullivan's Travels. " [More]

"First of all, why is working with someone else's material "in their defense"? :)And also, according to IMDB, even though it's based on a novel, they did write the screenplay. It's definitely not the first time they've written a screenplay based on other material. The Ladykillers based off the original british filmIntolerable Cruelty seems to be based off of someone else's story. I know the screenplay was rewritten and floated around for many years.O Brother, Where Art Thou? from Homer's OdysseyThe Big Lebowski is in many ways a retelling of The Big Sleep (a novel first)Miller's Crossing was taken from the novels of Dashiell Hammett most notably The Glass KeySeveral of their other movies are specific homages to certain other movies or styles or eras of movies " [More]

"Hey great category, even though I'm sure I've not seen enough of the greats. For instance I've never seen Rififi, although I know it's considered the best. Although I HAVE seen Big Deal on Madonna Street, which from what I'm told is pretty much a parody of Rififi in a way.1. Reservoir Dogs. Yeah it takes all of the best and puts them together into something even better.2. The Killing. You said it well enough.3. The Sting. Does this count? They really didn't have to break into anywhere, but they sure did hussle a huge amount of cash. Oh well, it's a great freakin movie.4. The Ladykillers and the remake. Yes the original was fantastic, and no matter what many people say, I believe the Coen brothers can do no wrong.5. Sexy Beast. Wonderful heist sequence.I also seem to remember an interesting heist sequence in Dead Presidents, but don't remember it quite well enough.Joem, wonderful mention of Groundhog Day! There is something appropriate about Joel and Ethan Coen officially sharing directing credit for the first time with their remake of The Ladykillers. This film uses many tropes and devices familiar to fans of their work -- a big terse dumb guy, an overly loquacious main character, and American roots music, to name just three. While all these familiar elements add up to an entertaining film, The Ladykillers lacks the comic highs of their best work, though the film is well worth seeing for Tom Hanks. Finally playing an all-out bad guy allows Hanks to shred every ounce of movie-star self-consciousness. This is his first film since winning back-to-back Oscars in which he seems free from the need to have the audience like him -- and that sense of freedom comes through in the performance. The brothers have given him some of the most baroque dialogue they have ever devised, and Hanks twists and turns his voice so that he plays every nuance perfectly. His many speeches are certainly the best aspects of The Ladykillers. The final 30 minutes of the film feels like an extended version of the death of Wheezy Joe from their previous film Intolerable Cruelty, but the black humor loses shock value fairly early as if Joel and Ethan do not have the heart to stay wicked for such an extended period of time. While this is most certainly a minor work from Coen brothers, they never just go through the motions. The final joke, about what happens to the score from the heist, provides a scathingly funny final twist. Unlike most of Joel and Ethan's work, the pleasures here are mostly ephemeral. Fun while it lasts, The Ladykillers may be the first Coen brothers film that fails to stay with the viewer. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
