Directed by Kerry Conran.
Directed by Kerry Conran, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow revolves around the mysterious disappearance of some of the world's most revered scientists. When an investigation is launched, Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow), reporter for the prestigious Chronicle, and Sky Captain (Jude Law), resident flying ace, are at the forefront of the case. Though the mission's perks include traveling around the world, the stout-hearted duo are nonetheless risking their lives with each passing moment, as the culprit is none other than the nefarious Dr. Totenkopf, and his goal, from what they can gather, is to destroying the earth in its entirety. Luckily, Sky Captain and Polly are not alone -- Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie), the commander of an all-female amphibious squadron, and Dex (Giovanni Ribisi), an unparalleled technical genius, have joined them in hopes of saving the planet before it's too late. Laurence Olivier appears posthumously as Dr. Totenkopf, via old film-clips "recycled" (or CG-altered) to fit the dialogue and scenes at hand. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

"After seeing the sleek teaser trailer for The Spirit, Frank Miller’s adaptation of the classic Will Eisner comics, it’s hard to believe that this new leaked trailer (originally posted on Film School Rejects, where it may still be available) is for the same movie. It begins with an arty, perfume-ad sort of misdirected marketing angle and then evolves into a goofy mix between the campy Batman series/movies, Sin City, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and Brenda Starr (remember that piece of crap?). And I’m not alone in thinking it now looks pretty terrible. Bloggers and commenters around the web are mostly critical of Samuel L. Jackson’s look. Personally, I think Gabriel Macht, as the lead, looks about as lame as Billy Zane in The Phantom (is it possible domino masks are never cool on an actor?). For a roundup of what others are saying, since you probably can no longer see the clip out yourself, check out some links after the jump. Wired’s Underwire blog says the new trailer “s ... " [More]

"Life is as it should be now that I watched a movie instead of studying. And though I am going through movie withdrawal and would rather watch Boondoc... no, I'd rather do homework than watch such an awful movie as Boondock Saints again. But even though I am having withdrawal syndromes and would watch almost anything just not to do homework, I can honestly say that Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is worth the watch anytime. It is not a perfect movie: at times, the acting is so off that it is hard not to picture Gwyneth Paltrow running around in front of a green screen (ex. When she runs under the robots and reacts to the stomping) but for the most part the hammy dialogue and delivery comes off as tongue-in-cheek. Also, for the most part, I am impressed with the look of the movie. I hate CGI effects, but in Sky Captain and the world of Tomorrow utilizes the CGI to create a stunning visual spectacle. The CGI creates a unique world and is probably the main factor that distingu ... " [More]

"One reason I like having The Big Sleep in our home library is the final shot. The shot begins as Bogart/Philip Marlowe hangs up the phone in Arthur Geiger's (Theodore von Eltz) house, having called the police to help mop up Eddie Mars' (John Ridgely) gang. He moves from the phone towards Bacall/Vivian Rutledge into a medium profile shot of the two stars/characters, oriented more towards Bacall/Vivian than Bogart/Marlowe. Bogart/Marlowe lays out options for dealing with Vivian's father, General Sternwood (Charles Waldron), and sister, Carmen (Martha Vickers), and Bacall/Vivian says, “You've forgotten one thing. Me.” The camera moves into a close-up as Bogart/Marlowe responds, “What's wrong with you?” “Nothing you can't fix,” she says.Sirens sound, and the two of them move their heads to face the camera, but averting their eyes, ostensibly looking towards the sound of the oncoming police. In the final moment, they look towards each other, with Bacall/Vivian still oriented towards the ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski It was a first-time filmmaker’s dream: With nothing but six minutes of footage and a script, couldn’t-be-greener writer-director Kerry Conran secured Hollywood darlings Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law for the leads in his CG-crazy debut, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Conran took his trusting stars, both used to less technically demanding work, and denied them context, forcing them to develop their characters in front of blank blue screens. And then he made them punch each other. Although the relationship between Paltrow’s Lois Lane–like newspaper reporter, Polly Perkins, and Law’s smug superpilot, Joe “Sky Captain” Sullivan, crackles only on the far side of the love/hate equation, Conran sure has fun with his characters’ bitterness. Schadenfraude—and, eventually, an exchange of blows—dominates the former lovers’ 1939 reunion, the first since Polly, suspecting Joe of having an affair, sabot ... " [More]

"Sleek, evanescent, shadowy, with a low-gloss platinum luster reminiscent of Wender's Wings of Desire, Kerry Conran's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a grand ride, full of whiz-bang gimmickry and homage to the glory days of retro-Science Fiction. An attempt to refine, fulfill, and exceed the spirit of wonder and astonishment that permeated comic books, novels, and movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still, Flash Gordon, and Metropolis. Funny though, once you start making a list of Sky Captain's numerous visual allusions, it's hard to know where to stop — Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Star Wars, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Veronica Voss — with its expressionist use of high relief, dusty sunlight, and columns of smoke. It's all tossed into the mix, with no attempt at concealment. And all things considered it works surprisingly well. Despite the borrowed structures of its milieu, there are no apparent seams. It has a look all its own. Many of the estab ... " [More]

"I loved so many things about David Moreton's Testosterone that it's hard to know where to begin: I was thrilled to see a movie called Testosterone in which heterosexuality was marginalized and machismo was not claimed as the exclusive domain of male breeders; in which the hero — graphic novelist Dean Seagraves (David Sutcliffe) — was an angry, unapologetic, passionate, deranged queer boy going full steam ahead to get resolution (or at least answers) from his boyfriend, Pablo, who disappears one night after leaving to buy cigarettes.I loved that Dean doesn't (pardon the expression) pussyfoot around, that when he unexpectedly spots Pablo's mother (Sonia Braga) at an art exhibition he doesn't hesitate to confront her. I loved that all the gay men in the film were assertive, ravishing and indiscreet. How often have we all seen movies built around straight men who would stop at nothing to reclaim their lost female loves?Don't get me wrong on this next ... " [More]

"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) is an old-fashioned boy’s adventure comic come to the big screen. The number of things that could have gone wrong with this movie is enormous, but Sky Captain deftly steers around the obstacles to become a good movie. This is a movie with style—set design in the vaguely 1930s era, lighting and camera work from 1920s German expressionism, costumes from 1940s film noir and war movies, and so much computer-generated stuff that the credits to technical workers go on forever. Gwenyth Paltrow, whom I have never particularly liked in any movie except Shakespeare in Love, plays the aggressive young reporter determined to travel with Sky Captain (Jude Law) to save the world and maybe rekindle their old romance. She wears a Humphrey Bogart outfit and high heels. This could easily have been ridiculous, but she and the cinematographers pull it off beautifully—pun intended. This is also a movie about adventure—monstrous robots ... " [More]

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a grand, lush spectacle that can astound or let down its audience at each wildly creative turn. To its credit, the film is lighthearted and visually sumptuous, packed with the kind of gee-whiz awe that rarely makes it to the big screen. Refreshingly, it does so without one bit of camp or irony in its bones. Hearkening back to the sci-fi pulp of the '40s, the film's look is a living and breathing homage to everything from Max Fleisher's Superman cartoons to Flash Gordon serials. The world that director Kerry Conran and his production designer/brother Kevin meticulously realized is one where the imagination of yesteryear is translated through the help of modern technology into a magical place where big robots and jetpacks reign supreme. Though the groundbreaking painterly effects define Sky Captain's world, it's the characters who populate it that pull the film's canvas together. Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow do an extraordinary job interacting with sets that were never there, but its their stumbling on the lackluster script that results in poor chemistry and cringe-worthy banter. Law himself shows zero machismo as Sky Captain; while his costar excels at playing, well, a feisty version of herself. On the upside, Giovanni Ribisi banks on subtlety with his sidekick character and it works, as does Angelina Jolie, whose tough British sneer chews up the screen charmingly well and makes each and every viewer wish that she owned the screen more than her top-billed thespian costars. Though the flick loses some of its steam after the bravura first act, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow still is an impressive start out of the gate for first-timer Conran, who gets to live out his dream here, viscerally satisfying audiences in a way that even the Hollywood heavyweights have a hard time delivering these days -- it's just too bad that more time wasn't spent on selling the drama rather than the eye-popping effects. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
