Directed by Adam McKay.
Marking the directorial debut of Adam McKay, former head writer for Saturday Night Live and founder of the Upright Citizen's Brigade, Anchorman is set during the 1970s and stars Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, San Diego's top-rated news anchorman. While Burgundy is outwardly willing to adjust to the idea of females in the workplace -- even outside of secretarial positions -- he certainly doesn't want his own job challenged. Keeping that in mind, it's no wonder that the arrival of Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), an aspiring newswoman, is, in Ron's eyes, not the studio's most welcome addition. After Veronica pays her dues covering so-called female-oriented fluff pieces (think cat fashion shows and cooking segments), the ambitious Veronica sets her eyes on the news desk; more specifically, on Ron's seat behind it. Not unpredictably, Ron doesn't take the threat lightly, and it isn't long before the rival newscasters are engaged in a very personal battle of the sexes. Anchorman was co-written by Ferrell, and features supporting performances from David Koechner, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd, Tara Subkoff, and Maya Rudolph. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

""You know what I'm gonna tell God when I see him?............ I'm gonna tell him I was framed." - The Way Of The Gun "I'm kind of a big deal, I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of mohogony." Anchorman "Is that the one with the donkey and the chambermaid?" - Dead Alive Dead Alive is a very quote-worthy film. " [More]

"This has not been a good week to be at New Line Cinema. After getting enslaved by the Time-Warner media monolith last week, the company could not even trumpet its swansong. “Semi-Pro,” the Will Ferrell sports comedy, was the last film to be released while still remaining a “free agent,” tanked at the box office, squeezing out $3 million less than “Meet the Spartans” just a few weeks ago.Let that sink in.Will Ferrell, who has a string of successes and is a worldwide box office “star,” made less in a comedy than a film that’s biggest asset was a Britney Spears clone shaving her head and breakdancing gladiators.Prognosticators are scratching their heads as to how this could happen, offering theories of a tired formula (Will Ferrell + a sport + wacky non-sequiturs = funny), an unstable movie-going weekend (though “Ghost Rider” did better in its second week last year at the same time and “Madea’s Family Reunion ... "Will Ferrell is downright funny in almost anything. In this one he’s a full of himself newsman with a retro vibe. The jokes are silly and aren’t meant as any kind of sarcastic commentary on anything. They’re just plain juvenile and funny. I appreciate smartly written scripts, but occasionally mindless fun is needed. Pretty darn near the entire Frat Pack makes an appearance, and that’s a good thing. Special honorable mention goes to Paul Rudd who is fast becoming one of my favorite character actors. " [More]

"Great topic!!! I'll play.tmoney - my #1 is your #51.) Anchorman - Don't get me wrong. I actually like Will Ferrell. But not in this stupid movie. He made me want to hit him. Seriously.2.) Wedding Crashers - Please tell me why this movie is supposed to be funny. I'm asking. Oh, and Will Ferrell appeared in this one too. Hey, I thought he was hilarious as Ricky Bobby. I always say it's a crapshoot with him.3.) Citizen Kane - Ok, before you start hurling tomatoes, hear me out. Yes, it was a breakthrough. Yes, it was ahead of its time. Is it the greatest movie of all time????? Why? The movie is sooooooo boring! I like cerebral films, I do. I like those kinds of quasi-biographical quasi-allegorical type films. I don't hate it completely, but I'm tired of everyone telling me it's the best there is. I still think Casablanca and The Godfather are both far better movies, and they're entertaining too. Those movies have it all! Sorry, Orson. ... " [More]

"Okay, I know there are often films that many people call "great", and you have to bite your tongue to avoid an argument against the masses. Well here are my top five that I dislike. I can't say that I "hate" them, but it sounded like a better discussion topic to say the word "hate". And I'm not just talking about Pirates of the Carribean 8 that will still make a billion dollars, so the "masses" love it, but I'm talking about dissagreements with your respectable peers. This list is in no particular order and just some that came to mind. I'm sure I've got hundreds. 1. Reservoir Dogs - I have to say this film was a big dissapointment. Maybe it was the mood I was in, but it just didn't engage me. Violence and surprises. Not refreshing. It was an amateur film by a then amateur director. 2. Vertigo - Do not get me wrong here, I consider myself a Hitchcock fan, and this may be blasphemy seeing most people say this was his masterpiece. I found it excru ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski “Afternoon Delight” is a pretty stupid song on its own, but in the hands of Will Ferrell, it’s even stupider. Though it’s certainly been used as an easy punch line elsewhere, the ditty about daytime lovin’ wasn’t just thrown on Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy’s soundtrack: Ferrell and co-stars Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and David Koechner perform it in fabulous four-part harmony complete with skyrockets-in-flight noises. Not just the chorus, not just the opening lines—the whole godawful thing. Accentuating an almost-mushy talk about what love it, it’s one of several brilliantly silly scenes in a movie that could have easily gone the way of a Saturday Night Live skit writ too large and too long. With bad hair and worse suits, Ron (Ferrell) is the curiously adored lead anchor at San Diego’s No. 1 TV station of the ’70s. He’s also, as the opening voice-over informs us, “the balls&rdq ... "My at the time girlfriend was spoiled with fancy dinners and wine and treats when I moved back to New Orleans to keep us in good spirits. We had to commute to see each other, so there was little room for spontaniety. I had little interest in seeing this movie and I knew she wanted to. When she came up to my new house one afternoon, we got right back in the car to go see this movie at the theatre in Esplanade and I snuck in a flask of whiskey for us to drink. When I pulled out the flask as a big reveal treat for her, she got scared and asked me to put it away and told me she didn't want to drink any. The entire situation reminded me of our relationship. The movie reminded me of the Harold. The Harold is a long-form improvisation method. It's very popular in Chicago. A lot of guys who made it big after improvising in Chicago still use the Harold in their work. See: Austin Powers. See: Anchorman. Now, wherever you live, go watch Improv. It will change your life. And read up on ... " [More]

Fans of Will Ferrell argue that his relentless commitment to his characters is what makes him a special comedic talent. The downside of this intense commitment is that his characters often lack a connection to reality. His characters in Old School and Elf live in a world of their own and the comedy comes from those characters' inability to acknowledge life as average people live it. Anchorman continues this structure and gives Ferrell plenty of opportunities to engage in the kind of bizarre behavior and surreal non sequiturs on which he has built his following. The film is full of supporting characters who are basically pale versions of Ferrell's benignly egomaniacal Ron Burgundy. There is just one style of comedy on display throughout the film, and it is a type of comedy that does not allow the film to have any resonance outside of the world it creates. Ferrell does not commit to the character so much as he commits to a comic construct that he knows is funny. Instead of becoming the character, his intensity is a novel way of allowing himself to comment on the character. Therefore it becomes impossible for anything close to a three-dimensional person to develop. While Anchorman certainly offers ingenious moments of surreal comedy (especially whenever Steve Carell opens his mouth), the lack of any reality keeps the film from offering anything other than fleeting laughs. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
