The third entry in Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible film series involves super Impossible Mission Forces (IMF) agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) being forced back into the field just when he was planning on marrying his girlfriend, Julia (Michelle Monaghan). The agency asks Hunt to save an operative (Keri Russell) he trained after weapons dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) kidnaps her. With the help of his field team -- played by Ving Rhames, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and Maggie Q -- Hunt achieves his goal, but becomes involved in a web of double-crosses that leave him wondering if he can trust his superiors (Billy Crudup and Laurence Fishburne). Eventually Davian threatens Julia's life in order to get away with his evil plan. Simon Pegg appears as an IMF tech expert. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

"This review contains minor spoilers. Television uber-producer ("Lost", "Alias", "Felicity) makes his motion picture directorial debut with what must have seemed, on paper at least, to be a can´t miss proposition: the third installment in a summer action/adventure franchise starring one of the world´s biggest (if not biggest) male stars that officially kicks off the summer movie season. While "Mission Impossible III" fires on all the cylinders required of a summer tent pole movie, it fails to deliver in one critical department: character. Sure, Tom Cruise gets plenty of screen time and Ving Rhames reprises his role as Ethan Hunt´s (Cruise) right hand man Luther Stickell. However, the other two new field team members (Maggie Q and Johnathan Rhys Meyers) get no development whatsoever in the entire 126 minutes running time. They are mere pawns for Ethan to use and move around while trying to find something called the Rabbit´s Foot in order to save his wife Jul ... " [More]

"Mission: Impossible III is a slick, fun, and fast-paced action thriller with a plenty good performance turned in by Tom Cruise. If you're not busy burning his effigy, you just might like his character. It's not a terrific movie. It's an enjoyable rent; it is stylish, suspenseful, and adrenaline-laced until the very end, but its depressing opener and childish grasping at realism drag it down into the popcorn entertainment genre. Well-directed by J.J. Abrams. " [More]

"With the exception of Wes Anderson’s films, few entries in recent cinema have been as exciting to watch as first viewings of the Bourne films. Much has been critically made over the "spy with a conscience" that has already influenced major action films (namely Casino Royale), but the praise is wholly warranted. The only other times that I have been wowed so much by an action sequence was the bridge scene from Mission: Impossible III. For the series' third and final (?) installment, director Paul Greengrass and his crew (especially cinematographer Oliver Wood and editor Christopher Rouse, both so key to the maestro's trademark mixed camera surveillance look) ante up by having three such scenes. High octane is an understatement: with The Bourne Ultimatum, new standards in filmmaking have been set. " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Quick, which do you care about more: Shelley Winters or intense action? That’s likely to be the deciding factor in how you respond to Poseidon, Wolfgang Petersen’s redo of 1972’s The Poseidon Adventure. In the latter, Winters plays a rotund old woman who’s sure she won’t survive the wreckage of the titular ship and thus makes frequent ready-to-die remarks to her devoted husband. You ache for both of them. You pity the never-married, middle-aged man, played meekly by Red Buttons, who’s given up on finding a companion. You admire the God-questioning preacher, a tough-as-nails Gene Hackman, for his gumption in the face of a nonsensical universe. And the obnoxious cop played by Ernest Borgnine? You care for him, too—or you at least want to wax the hell out of those freaky eyebrows. In Poseidon, you get Josh Lucas and Emmy Rossum and Freddy Rodriguez—the first indication that the disaster movie has changed profoundly ... " [More]

"Now and again I have been seeing previews for the next Mission Impossible movie. I loved the first Mission Impossible movie and thought the second was 'so-so'. One way or another, I really want to see Mission Impossible 3 when it comes out. Being a developer on Spout.com I was browsing the new films in the database and saw this flic. I then noticed that the director for it is the same one that directs the LOST and Alias shows. I loved the first season of LOST, and some of the later episodes (I have lost touch with the show because of my schedule). Needless to say, I am looking forward to seeing this movie because of how I feel about the first MI and the fact that it is being directed by the director of LOST. " [More]

is neutral about it.
There is a thin line between a big dumb action film and a big ridiculous action film. The first assumes the audience will turn out no matter what the filmmakers do, while the second is made by people who enjoy the outrageous over-the-top stunts just as much as the audience. Mission: Impossible III is a big ridiculous action film. The action sequences for the most part do not inspire awe with breathtaking effects, but they do provide giggles because of how the complications pile up -- the big set pieces are well-written. The gadgetry and the pacing will remind viewers of the best of the Bond films, and the supporting cast often provides welcome surprises. Philip Seymour Hoffman is riveting as the bad guy, and fans of the actor will enjoy the moment when he gets to play Tom Cruise playing his character -- a sentence that will make more sense to those familiar with the Mission: Impossible series. First-time feature director J.J. Abrams strikes a fine balance between character and action, allowing supporting players to register without ever letting it feel like anyone other than Tom Cruise is the center of the film. That may be a stumbling block for those who have grown tired of Cruise, but anyone else should feel satisfied with this solid, enjoyable effort. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
