Directed by Naoyuki Tomomatsu.
This 2001 J-Horror effort from director Naoyuki Tomomatsu is set in a future dystopia where teenaged girls begin dying for no apparent reason -- and often in an elated, chronically happy state of mind. One of these girls, Stacy, is back from the dead, however, and she's ready to gorge herself on human flesh. As more and more teenage-girl zombies begin to feast on the living, the people of Japan brace themselves and try to find a way to end the madness. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

"It seems like it happened when nobody was looking, the return of the zombie film. They’ve been popping up all over the place. Heck, even the local Cineplex 47 near the mall has been showing ‘em. Great news indeed. Especially for all of us who’d prefer to see the fat zombie on that abandoned boat in the harbor get shot again… rather than resigning ourselves to another evening of “I Screamed On Halloween When I Heard The Legend of The Witch Who Knew What You Did Last Valentine’s Day… Part IV”. It may lead to a surprising revelation to stop and think, for a moment, about who it is that has left the deepest bite-marks upon the neck of this most beloved sub-genre as of late. It’s not Italy, it’s not America and it’s not Spain. Who’s left? Japan, that’s who. They have unleashed some of the wildest, weirdest and wettest zombie films seen in over a decade. Witness the savage and uncontrolled excesses of Wild Z ... " [More]

"Hey, to each his own, Doc! I'd be the first guy to admit that Japanese horror isn't for everyone. All your info about Audition is right on the money. The man responsible is Takashi Miike (or "the master," as some of us call him). Toward the end it gets a little surreal, so it's not straight-ahead horror by any stretch. When you do screen it you'll have to give me a shout and let me know what you thought.I've heard good things about Stacy. It's on my pile of movies to watch -- eventually. " [More]

"I have not yet seen "Audition". I have heard of it and I intend to watch it,,, someday! That is that Japanese director ... Mikke What'shisname ... Yes? Please correct me if I'm wrong. To tell you the truth, I am not all that into Japanese Horror. I have seen several and I was never all that impressed ... There were some cool gore scenes but I find that usually the Movies are just too ludicrous and difficult to watch .... I thought "Stacy" was pretty funny and had some pretty entertaining Gore FX, (I watched this on a recomendation from Mr. Quint), but the movie itself was pretty lame and difficult to watch. I would much rather watch the WORST American Horror Film, like "Mesa Of Lost Women" or "Plan 9 From Outer Space" or "The Beginning Of The End" or "Night Of The Lepus" or ... my God! The list just keeps going and going! ... I better quit while I'm ahead! " [More]

"I was drawn to this film by the idea of a near-death happiness that preceeded becoming a zombie. My own ideas about zombies require a similar state of mind. I don't like the thought of the slow decay into death. If you're going to go undead, why not have an extra dose of life first? " [More]

is neutral about it.
Former adult film director Naoyuki Tomomatsu obviously knows his audience, because jokey George Romero and Evil Dead references abound in this over-the-top zombie story. Stacy will appeal to fans of zombie films and those with Asian girl fetishes (there should be a fair amount of crossover between the two), and despite a rather slavish devotion to genre, it tries to advance more than just cannibalism and sexy Japanese teenagers. Adapted from the novel by Kenji Otsuki, Stacy envisions a future plagued by a worldwide epidemic that kills off females between the ages of 15 and 17, who then rise as undead cannibal zombies called "Stacies" that can only be stopped by being chopped into exactly 165 pieces. This wild concept doesn't carry the existential dread of Romero's unexplained zombie infestations, but it's far more intriguing than the average walking dead scenario found in a hundred weak Night of the Living Dead rip-offs. Unfortunately, the abrupt conclusion suggests that Otsuki's book had far more plot than Tomomatsu was willing to work with, as voice-over narration explains how the world deals with the Stacy problem over the next several decades. Stacy has energy to spare, but the digital video cinematography doesn't help the believability factor any, and most of the budget was probably spent on the film's endless violent effects. Gorehounds will bust a gut over the prodigious blood, organs, spinal chords, and rubber limbs on display, a juicy buffet that wavers in authenticity but packs a nauseating punch. Overall, a good effort at expanding a staid subgenre that hardcore adherents will appreciate. ~ Fred Beldin, All Movie Guide
