Directed by François Ozon.
François Ozon's psychological thriller Swimming Pool stars Charlotte Rampling as a mystery writer. When Sarah (Rampling) is offered the use of her publisher's vacation home, she accepts the offer. The conservative, repressed Sarah clashes with the house's other inhabitant, Julie (Ludivine Sagnier), the uninhibited daughter of the publisher. Julie's promiscuous sex life intrigues Sarah and starts to lead to the thawing of the emotional deep-freeze between the two. The death of one of Julie's nightly assignations complicates their lives. Swimming Pool was screened in competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

"Ok, so I just finished watching Swimming Pool which, like other films before it has a twist ending in which you realize that the past 100+ minutes might have been false. I did not enjoy this twist, while with the Usual Suspects (a film which I do still have issues with), you always feel like you are being manipulated, I felt that Swimming Pool doesn't accomplish the same feeling. For those not in the know and don't care about spoilers, Swimming Pool is the tale of an author who can't concentrate on writing, who decides to take a vacation in France, which is interrupted by the sex-loving daughter of her publisher. When the daughter kills a man who won't have sex with her, the story turns into a very similar looking murder mystery than that of the authors books. Unfortunately you realize that the character of the daughter is fake and that for the past hour and a half we have been watching the author write her book. The final twist is what I don't like about this ... " [More]

"Swimming Pool, The—Although this movie is engaging, it has two problems. First, the motivation of the up-tight English mystery writer to help the young nymphomaniac cover up a crime is not clear or believable. Second, the surprise ending has nothing to do with the theme or plot of the story, although it is cute. " [More]

Gorgeously shot and exquisitely performed, François Ozon's beguiling Swimming Pool casts a lovely dark spell, but a predictable plot twist in the film's final third ensures that the film ends disappointingly. While more enjoyable than Ozon's previous entry, the misbegotten musical mystery 8 Women, Swimming Pool doesn't match the disturbing psychological intrigue of the director's best work, nor does it follow through on its initial promise. Charlotte Rampling plays Sarah Morton, the repressed British mystery writer with a subtlety and grace that lends humanity to an archetype; and Ludivine Sagnier matches Rampling as Julie, the French wild child who invades Sarah's tranquil writer's holiday. Julie is also a type, but Sagnier plays the part with such full-bodied vitality and underlying vulnerability that it transcends cliché. The plot eventually fails this pair. To the credit of Ozon and screenwriter Emmanuele Bernheim (who collaborated with Claire Denis on the wonderful Friday Night), they keep the characters' true motivations opaque until well into the film. Eventually, they begin telegraphing the inevitable plot twist in embarrassingly obvious fashion. Perhaps it's all meant to be a sly comment on the nature of Sarah's work as a mystery novelist. In any case, the silly dénouement of the film fails as drama. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
