Directed by Richard Curtis.
All of London is in love -- or longing to be -- in Four Weddings and a Funeral writer Richard Curtis' first directorial effort. Billed as "the ultimate romantic comedy," Love Actually involves more than a dozen main characters, each weaving his or her way into another's heart over the course of one particularly eventful Christmas. The seemingly perfect wedding of Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) brings many of the principals together, including heartsick best man Mark (Andrew Lincoln), who harbors a very unrequited crush on Juliet. There's also recent widower Daniel (Liam Neeson), trying to help his lonely stepson Sam (Thomas Sangster) express his true feelings to a classmate. Across town, devoted working mother Karen (Emma Thompson) tries to rekindle the passion of her husband, Harry (Alan Rickman), who secretly pines for a young colleague of his. In the same office, the lonely Sarah (Laura Linney) not-so-secretly pines for a man just a few desks away (Rodrigo Santoro), who returns her affections but may not be able to dissuade her neuroses. Providing the unofficial soundtrack for all of the couples is an aging rocker (Bill Nighy) who just wants to cash in and get laid -- but even he might find a meaningful relationship in the most unlikely of places. A working print of Love Actually premiered at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

"[quote user="corvine"] Here are the rules: Two actors, actresses, or directors will be chosen. It is now your duty to try and connect the two using information on Spout (player pages and filmography). The more elaborate or funny the connections, the better. 6 degrees of separation is your goal but you are not limited to 6. Use Spout to search for the films to make your connection. Please indicate the person you are using as the connection and link the movie in which they appear. Good Luck. Here is the first one. "1. Love Actually -- Maybe not the most realistic representation of love on planet Earth, but the copious amount of varied stories on the theme might be helpful to an arriving alien. 2. Elf -- The story is pretty much an alien trying to fit into the real world. I think any non-Earthling could benefit from some of the tips Papa Elf imposes on Buddy, especially not to eat leftover gum. 3. Babel -- Very important Netflix fodder for an alien because it does not just showcase American cities and American problems, it is an Earth affair that tackles issues of communication, something an alien could easily relate to. 4. Lost in Translation -- A variation on the alien-in-a-new-land theme. Bill Murray gives a performance that maybe the most apathetic and sarcastic of aliens could get down with. Although I don't think that an alien is going to find its Scarlett Johannson counterpart quite as easily, or beautifully. 5. The Good Girl -- How do you know that this alien isn't going to visit a sma ... " [More]

"This has to be one of my favorite Romantic Comedies. I have a tradition now, along with the 1951 Scrooge movie and It's a Wonderful Life, to watch this film at Christmas time every year. I just LOVE all the different stories, some make you giggle, some make you get a little teary eyed, some make you sigh because you hope someday that might be you...but it's a GREAT movie with lots of twists and turns and I love how they are all tied together. I just think it's a great movie about hope and change and happiness and familarity and betrayal. I would have given it more stars if I could. " [More]

"Love Actually made we smile and, several times, laugh. It is a simple movie which, in case viewers couldn’t figure out such a simple movie, states its theme baldly in the opening seconds: ‘The news is full of hate. But whenever I am down, I like to think about the greeting area at Heathrow Airport, and it seems to me that . . . love actually is all around us.’ Then the movie follows about 8 love stories. Some people have complained they had trouble following so many stories, but I thought the movie did an excellent job of keeping them separate. There being no originality in the plot, the movie brought out the big-name stars: Emma Thompson does a perfect job of a middle-aged wife and Alan Rickman does one brilliant scene as her husband—as he is walking away from his secretary to go Christmas shopping, she says, “Are you going to get me something?” and through facial expressions and body language he conveys that he had not even thought of it, he w ... "Have you ever been in a store where DVD's are sold, and you're sort of shopping around for them, and you feel as if you just want something new, something different from what you've been buying or watching. I went to the store today for the purpose of buying Fraggle Rock on DVD and walked around looking at the sales and such, and I happened upon this movie, which I'd never even seen before. Everyone I know who has seen it pretty much loves it. I bought it. Yes, without having seen this movie, I took a chance. It has all the ingredients I usually go for: a smart story, a bunch of British stars, a great soundtrack. I figure...what are the odds I don't actually like it? Slim to nil. I have to watch it again, but it was a charming movie. It's full of commentary about love in life and life in love while stringing together seeming unrelated relationship stories of people who are only loosely connected. Plus, it's got two men from Bridget Jones and two men from the Hitchhiker's G ... " [More]

lost interest.
It isn't often that one gets to see a feature cobbled together from a dozen or so rejected script ideas, but that's exactly what prolific British romantic comedy writer Richard Curtis seems to have done with his first directorial effort. Tackling the venerable genre of ensemble comedy with an approach that's more Dr. Frankenstein than Robert Altman, Love Actually strives to encompass the romantic longings of a gaggle of characters both young and old, straight and rampantly straight, wealthy and merely middle-class. The film's prologue narration attempts to establish the overriding importance of love in a post-9/11 world, but many of the characters in Love Actually don't exactly support such a lofty theme; there's a crude bloke dying to get laid (Kris Marshall); an over-the-hill rocker just looking to get paid (Bill Nighy); and at least three randy employers (Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, and improbable Prime Minister Hugh Grant) longing to hook up with workplace subordinates. The film is packed with Curtis' trademark bon mots, stammering heroes, and wry melancholy, to be sure, but the cumulative aesthetic can best be described as "cute" -- certainly not the first word that popped to mind with the writer's more acerbic Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, or Bridget Jones's Diary. Any of Love Actually's plotlines -- well, at least six of them -- might have made a decent film on its own, but taken together, they buckle under the weight of the film's "all you need is love" mantra. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide
