Directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Perhaps the most highly anticipated film of 2003, Kill Bill Vol. 1 marked the return of renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino after a six-year hiatus. Re-teaming the director with Uma Thurman for the first time since 1994's Pulp Fiction, the film was originally the first half of what was to be a three-hour-plus movie before being split into two films. Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When The Bride opts to leave the outfit for a life of marital bliss, it doesn't sit well with her boss, Bill (David Carradine), so he has her former cohorts, played by Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, and Michael Madsen, show up at the nuptials, leaving behind a blood bath. Miraculously, The Bride survives a bullet to the head and, four years later, she sets out for revenge against her four assassins and their employer. The story is concluded in Kill Bill Vol. 2, released six months later. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"[quote user="Dr_Gor"] (I have ALL of Bruce Lee's movies as well as MOST of Sonny Chiba's, Chuck Norris', Steven Segal's and Jean Claude Van Damme's... and many others (ever heard of James Ryan?) ... I am a huge fan of David Carradine in whatever he is in. [/quote] I haven't heard of James Ryan, recommend a movie in particular? I watched Kill Bill 1 and 2 in the same night with porcupine and mattypro one time. I felt very . . . full . . . after watching both of them in a row. Like I'd eaten a greasy wet burrito smothered in meat sauce, topped with nachos. Yeah I felt that good, and a little sick, too. " [More]

"[quote user="mercurial"] When done right, a scene that utilizes split screen techniques can become unforgettable. Done wrong, and, well . . . %$*@! 5.) Jackie Brown - Adds that extra something during the latter half of the film. I could switch this with Kill Bill, but I personally like the use of it here a little more. 4.) Requiem For A Dream - Used throughout the film to emphasize the effects of the various drugs consumed by the characters. I'd say it worked. 3.) When Harry Met Sally - The bedroom scene in which Harry and Sally are watching television from their own separate bedrooms but split screen to appear they are in the same bed. Amazing dialogue and just plain fun. 2.) Timecode - Four interweaving stories occurring simultaneously, each a single continuous shot. Wow. 1.) "YES! I was so tired of getting into arguments with people as to why I thought Tarintino was overrated. I don't have to worry about that any more as Kill Bill is a masterpiece. Before we go any futher, let's make it clear that this is one movie in two parts. Volume 2 is not a sequel, it's the second half. It's an epic, brillantly directed and written, featuring amazing performances from Uma Thurman and David Carridine, great photography and editing-in fact, aside from an unessary couple of scenes near the end, it's just about perfect. My problem with Tarintino's previous work was that it seemed like exceptionally well written but lackluster retreads of the trash movies the director loved. Although I, live everyone else admired the non-linear structure and dialouge, I thought that Reservior Dogs, Pulp Fiction, "The Man From the South" from Four Rooms and Jackie Brown did not have much to say. To me, recycled trash is still trash. They were made worse by somevery ugly, overexpos ... " [More]

"Discussion of this summer’s heroine lack is in full throttle. Last friday, New York’s Vulture blog asked, “Where are the Roles for Superwomen?; Stu at Defamer jumped off from there, ultimately suggesting an X-Men spin-off for Ellen Page; John at The Movie Blog listed reasons “Why Most Female Lead Action Films Don’t Succeed” (shocker: men can’t identify with or believe in strong — and strong — female characters). Now, adding to the conversation in the least noble way possible, USA Weekend presents the appropriately titled “Girls Want to Have Fun, Too”, a cover story (with the least flattering photos I’ve ever seen) from its summer movie preview that spotlights Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Liv Tyler as the “leading ladies” of the season’s three big comic book adaptations. Of course, each of these three actresses are only secondary figures to their superhero counterparts (in Iron Man, The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk, respectively). But that’s not the worst of it: the ... " [More]

"Undoubtedly one of my favorite trailers has been for Kill Bill. I remember the trailer vividly and couldn't stop thinking about it even through the film I had paid to go see in the theater and went immediately home and scoured the internet so that I could watch it ad nauseam. It didn't show too much of the film, just enough from key scenes to make my inner samurai scream "I WANNA SEE NOW!"http://www.apple.com/trai lers/miramax/kill_bill/Even now it's like a fun little recap of the first volume. "After much deliberation, I have created a comprehensive list of my current 30 favorite movies ever made. I am still debating about it in my head, considering there are still so many more movies that I want to include on it. However, I widdled it down to 30. I'll reveal them periodically over the next few days, with my absolute favorites (1-10) having long explanations, and then after that getting shorter and shorter. Here's numbers 21-30 with brief explanations.21. The Shining Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece of horror is in my humble opinion the scariest film ever made. I have never seen anything that has contained as much suspense and as much sheer terror as this movie. And while I usually don't like the genre a whole lot, I love this movie.22. The 40 Year Old Virgin/Knocked Up There was a tie here, and I figured I could group them together since it's the same crew. Apatow's movies have changed comedy, and both of these films are almost beyond hila ... " [More]

"Emilio Maille's Rosario Tijeras is a surprsing period piece and drama. When I first read about it I expected it to be more like a Kill Bill. It isn't. The film is filled with wondrous scenary, and a very human drama. It forsakes flashy killing and comic book blood for a strong story and amazing acting by Flora Martinez. The story revolves around two friends who meet Rosario at a club. The swinger becomes enraptured by her. It is his friend who becomes the keeper of Rosario's secrets. For a film about a killer there are very few murders in it. Flora Martinez is a star who should be seen a lot more. In this part she is sensual, dark, vunerable, and fearful. She gives Rosario a strong mask hiding her pain behind a party woman lifestyle. Her best work comes at the end of the film when she says more in her eyes than the part could ever transmit. My one complaint with the film is the extras were not subtitled. The extras include a making of, and the casting tapes of Martinez. " [More]

"Hi!I am Elli. New in Spout. I found Spout watching the Four Eye Monster -movie in Youtube. This is a place for me. Movie fanatic like the rest.Genres are great. I guess I mostly enjoy good comedies with a sparkle of darkness/drama. Like Little Miss Sunshine, Garden State or Lost in Translation. But I get trully excited with good action scifi stuff like the marvelous Sunshine or the first The Matrix. I love to spend time with good animation like the old Disneys The Little Mermaid or The Lion King or Japanese creations like Miyazaki`s Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi. When I want something really romantic I watch Before Sunset. I regard Clueless as a classic. Fabuleux destin dÁmelie Poulain makes me smile, some Bollywood movies and Moulin Rouge (in the end) makes me cry and Quentin´s Kill Bills makes me want to go jogging. Horror I cannot watch because with my over active imagination I get nightmares. Usually I prefer to see a movie I haven´t yet seen over a good mov ... " [More]

Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol. 1 is the work of a master filmmaker falling in love with directing all over again. After a layoff of six years, Tarantino pulls out all the stops to serve up an entertaining shot of action cinema. The film has momentum and an infectious sense of over-the-top fun that manifests itself in the various styles Tarantino employs. The anime section is brilliantly conceived and, quite frankly, live actors performing the story would have probably kept the film from getting an R rating. The same is true of the decision to film in black-and-white during the final battle. Had the splattering blood and flying limbs been presented in color, the ratings board would probably have balked. However, by choosing to shoot the sequence in black-and-white, Tarantino gets around that problem and forces the viewer to concentrate more on the choreography and the editing than the bloodshed. Judging this film is dicey, as it truly is nothing more than the first-half of a movie that was always intended to be a three-hour extravaganza. Kill Bill Vol. 2 hit theaters the following year and answered the question as to whether Vol. 1 was an emotionally empty exercise in (admittedly highly entertaining) style(s), or the first half of an epic that contained hidden depths of character and nuance. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
