Directed by Boaz Yakin.
In this comedy from director Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans), Brittany Murphy stars as Molly Gunn, the daughter of a dead rock star, who lives off her inheritance and has never worked a day in her life. When her father's estate is swindled away from her, Molly suddenly finds her life of luxury and excess pulled out from under her. Begrudgingly, she decides that she has to get a job and is hired as a nanny for Ray Schliene (Dakota Fanning), the daughter of record executive Roma Schliene (Heather Locklear). At first Molly can't shake her spoiled-brat personality, but eventually she and Ray discover that they have a lot in common and a strong bond is formed. Jesse Spencer plays Molly's boyfriend, and Donald Faison, who previously worked with Murphy in Clueless, plays another record executive who offers Molly a place to live until she gets on her feet. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"By Tricia Olszewski Usually a line such as "Are you on crack?" is played facetiously. Especially in a comedy—and especially when delivered by an 8-year-old. But in Uptown Girls, the exasperated inquiry is pronounced with such gravitas that the audience, already puzzling over where lead Brittany Murphy got her inspiration to play twitchy rich-girl-turned-baby-sitter Molly Gunn, will likely think, Ahhh, so that's it! Of course, for some, the epiphany might not come until "Her au pair said my new nanny was a slutbag whore!" Both these pearls of perception come from Ray (Dakota Fanning), the tiny adult whose difficult personality spurs a high turnover in caretakers. Molly, a late rock legend's daughter, is forced to take the job after her accountant runs off with the family fortune. The film's most obvious problem is the irksome personalities of these two characters: Ray is an uptight smartass, while Molly is the type who spends her fab 22nd-birthday celebration asking her frien ... One of several misguided, ill-fitting Brittany Murphy vehicles, Uptown Girls has enough elements in the right place to make you wish it were better. A sort of Cinderella-in-reverse tale (see also the execrable Lindsay Lohan-starring Just My Luck), the film has the look and feel of a modern-day Manhattan fable, thanks in large part to ace cinematographer Michael Ballhaus. The quartet of female screenwriters involved in the project have also given the material a hip, slightly satirical fairytale vibe, presenting Murphy as a poor little rich girl who just needs to be shown the light of compassion by a littler poor little rich girl (played with a scary intensity by Dakota Fanning). As they bark at each other for the majority of the picture, you cease to care whether or not they're going to break out of their hard, calloused shells; not the best mood to be in while watching a light coming-of-age chick flick. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide
