Final Destination 2 screenwriters Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber make their directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect. Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher with facial hair) wants to free himself from his disturbing childhood memories. As a kid, he often blacked out for long periods of time and tried to detail his life in a journal. As a young adult, he revisits the journal entries to figure out the truth about his troubled childhood friends Kayleigh (Amy Smart), Lenny (Elden Henson), and Tommy (William Lee Scott). When he discovers he can travel back in time in order to set things right, he tries to save his beloved friends. However, he finds out that relatively minor changes can make major problems for the future. The Butterfly Effect also stars Eric Stoltz, Ethan Suplee, and Melora Walters. The title was inspired by the story A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

"Saw the director's cut last night and definitely love the ending. However, I feel a bit weak here and there throughout the whole film, story wise. First of all, the medium of Evan's time traveling is his memory written photographed or filmed so going back to his childhood does make sense to me alright. But then after a while, I was wondering how he can "go back" after he goes back since the moemory is then not created yet. Therefore, he should live until he grows up again like in 君といた未来のために-I`ll be back-, over and over....,no? There is a time machine car in Back to the Future, a fairy in プロポーズ大作戦, an angel in The Family Man etc. so the traveler can go back (and forth).....what's for Evan? Another thing that I have been thinking is that timeline should be parallel from one's memory to another; therefore, the prisoner friend should see the marks already insead of as a "sudden stigmata." Ohhh....this "undo" and "redo" story al ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski In The Butterfly Effect, Ashton Kutcher’s brain hurts. OK, it’s supposed to be the brain of his character, Evan Treborn, who has suffered from blackouts since the age of 7 and learns as a college student that he has the ability to go back in time and stop the terrible, horrible, no-good happenings from his childhood. Whenever Evan alters the past—say, being molested along with his friend Kayleigh (Amy Smart) by Kayleigh’s dad (Eric Stoltz), or getting bullied by Kayleigh’s screwed-up brother, Tommy (played at 8 and 13 by Cameron Crigger and Jesse James, respectively)—a new history comes flooding into his pretty little head. You can tell, because Kutcher demonstrates the process by bugging his eyes, slackening his jaw, and generally looking as if he’s experiencing a Very Private Moment. Indeed, Kutcher’s first go at drama is often as comic as his work on That ’70s Show: He also blinks a lot when he’s li ... " [More]

"See, that's why I think science fiction has to necessarily have science in it. A What If question can be anything, anything at all. If we have to "imagine" the answer to the What If, I think that's when it becomes fantasy. If the answer we imagine is scientific in nature, or "sounds" scientifc, then it can be scifi. I don't think any What If is science fiction by default. That seems too broad, and I think there is a definite distinction between what is fantasy and what is scifi.Take The Da Vinci Code. I saw that as arguably fantasy because the What If centers on (no spoiler) the quest and the goal of the quest. Is it scifi? The What If is philosophical, religious, and possibly sociological in nature. Some people probably think it's not even fantasy, but I do.Or take The Butterfly Effect. "What if you had the power to go back and change something? What would you change? What would happen?" That can't be a scifi picture because it never attempts to ex ... " [More]

"I don'g get it. How do some actors end up playing roles in certain movies. You know what I am talking about. Like when Owen Wilson shows up in Behind Enemy Lines as a pilot...Sometimes these performances turn out ok and sometimes you just dont understand how an actor who was so good in a different movie could manage to be so bad in this one.Im gonna make a list of what I mean:John Cusak: This guy might be the king of this genre for me. I just dont get how he could be so brilliant in movies like High Fidelity and Say Anything but SO horrible in movies like Identity. Seriously...that movie is BAD.Owen Wilson: As mentioned before, this guy is similar but the opposite of John Cusak in that he has been the only redeeming part of MANY of the non-Wes Anderson movies that he has been in such as Behind Enemy Lines. Seriously...how does your career survive being in movies like You Me and Dupree and The Big Bounce? TERRIBLE!Ashton Kutcher: this guy seems like a tool to me. He is so ... " [More]

"Well...to quote some bad hair band (whose name escapes me right now) "Here I am! Rock me like a Hurricane..." Which is what I am about to do to you Rizzo....you wack head.Seriously...Hellboy? Better than Batman?? You must be joking. Unfortunately, you are normally funny...so I cant say this was a very successful joke. Haha.Dude, Hellboy was ok...but if you are talking about comic book movies of "recent years" then you are reffering to Batman Begins which is a fantastic movie. And most certainly superior to Hellboy. Even if you are refering to the original Batman movie with Michael Keaton, I can't really believe that you think Hellboy is better.Sure sure...these are supposed to be movies that surprised you in a good way, so it is FINE that you have Hellboy on your list...but saying it is better than the most recent Batman movie is silly. Here is my list:Hitch: after I got done watching this movie, i decided I didnt like it....but after thinking about it, i realized that ... Moviegoers who loved Back to the Future or Frequency salivated over the promise of The Butterfly Effect. Unfortunately for them, the film is more a repeating game of "do over" than a thought-provoking look at space-time conundrums. Taking inspiration from the notion that even a butterfly's flapping wings can send a ripple of causation through the world, the film tries to flesh out a murky premise about a boy (Ashton Kutcher) who can alter his past by mentally rearranging the writings in his diary. The words flutter, the physical world reverberates like a massive earthquake, and suddenly history has been rewritten. If what the film did with its core existential ideas was interesting, Kutcher's gift would not require in-depth explanation, nor would the rules that govern it be very important. But Butterfly is no Donnie Darko, despite stealing some of that film's tone and plot elements. Darko is far more successful at de-emphasizing plot clarity in favor of style and a penetrating emotional truth. Crucially undercutting this film's power is the fact that it presents Kutcher's alternate pasts in a sequence that builds toward the most comic version --- intentionally or otherwise --- rather than the most tragic. The writing/directing team behind Final Destination 2 brings a similar slick palette of ominous blue hues to this film. But it's Kutcher's lack of gravitas, the reason he's cast in comedies more often than thrillers, that becomes an insurmountable problem at exactly the wrong time. As a result, The Butterfly Effect has no effect. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
