Directed by Danny Boyle.
Animal rights activists free a group of infected chimpanzees to horrifying results in this speculative sci-fi horror effort from Trainspotting director Danny Boyle. Waking from a coma in a deserted London hospital 28 days later, bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) takes to the deserted city streets in a state of mystified confusion. Joining forces with another group of survivors following a terrifying encounter in a seemingly abandoned church, Jim soon learns the truth behind the deserted streets and the menacing creatures that lurk in the shadows. It's soon revealed that the chimpanzees had been harboring a deadly virus that sends its victims into a furious, murderous rage, and in the days following the initial exposure, the entire population was nearly wiped out due to the resulting homicidal rampage. Is there still a glimmer of hope for humanity -- or has the deadly "rage" virus found its way to foreign shores and infected the entire planet? ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Sunshine is such an impressive throwback to the almost lost thinking man’s genre of Science Fiction that you can almost forgive it’s final act. The combination of director Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy is as potent as it was in 28 Days Later. The lives of six billion people rest in the hands of eight, fraying crewmembers. Taking place in the near future when the sun is rapidly cooling due to an unexplained phenomenon; the movie starts with the spaceship, the Icarus II, hauling a bomb the size of Manhattan to the sun in an effort to restart the star. This is the second and final attempt. The first ship that was sent seven years ago never completed the mission. All of the remaining fissionable material on Earth was mined to make this last bomb. The crew is beginning to come apart as the movie starts. They are about to enter the dead zone where radiation from the sun will cause too much interference for messages to be sent to home and they won’t receive any either. ... " [More]

"well done xavier- it is 28 days later... right before the protagonist finds out that zombies have taken over the London. I haven't seen the original AS film, which is on my must see list. I hope to watch it before I see the A&E series. I also do hope to be a long time and dependable contributor to this group... lol " [More]

"[quote user="magrebi"] [quote user="lopezdash"] So what'd you guys think about A&E's 2-part mini-series Andromeda Strain? [/quote] never got around to watching it- as soon as it is available on Netflix however... question: What movie features this group's tag line (not description), written in blood (I think) on the wall of a church. [/quote] You stumped me for a second, but the answer is 28 Days Later. Welcome to our group, Ian! I do hope you'll become an active contributor! " [More]

"28 Days Later is a movie we've all seen several times before, with a story that will be familiar to anyone with a even a passing famililatiy with science fiction film, TV shows, or literature. Although it's not a bad movie, it is a pointless one. There was no reason for this film to exist. The film opens with shades of The Omega Man. A young man named Jimmy (Cillian Murphy) awakes at a London hospital. It is clear he has surgery on his head recently. He walks through a completely deserted London until he comes upon two people in gas masks. There names are Selena (Naomie Harris) and Clifton (Luke Maybe), and they explain what's going on. Twenty eight days earlier, a strange virus called The Rage began to spread. The Rage causes its victims to go berserk and become little more than homicidal zombies, it is incurable and has only a twenty second incubation period. Infection is spread by the blood or saliva of an infected person entering the body. Nearly the entire ... " [More]

"The bar for zombie movies has been raised. You almost can't say zombie since they don't stumble around blindly searching for "BRAINS". The concept here is a highly contagious virus called "RAGE" that the government has been developing for use as a Weapon of Mass Destruction. The afflicted go berzerk, killing anything in there path. They are fast and they know how to operate a door knob. Contact with their blood and you have thirty seconds before you become a raving bloodthirsty maniac. The whole voodoo concept of a gas that reanimates the dead or a spell that opens a portal to hell seems so yesterday now. Now movie makers are challenged to keep up with our fears of secret govt. testing facilities and Chemical warfare. Great movie. Great concept. High speed camera work to match your heart rate. Focuses less on the rotting flesh special effects and more on the tactical response needed to stay in front of the advancing hordes. For zombie-files, this is a mu ... " [More]

"You forgot to mention the zombie-cat from Pet Sematary . At the time this movie came out, my Mom had a big, fat, grey cat named 'Smokey' who was absolutely identical to the one in the movie... Pretty creepy... But you MUST check out the 'zombie-horses' (!) in Amando DeOssorio's Return of the Evil Dead aka Return of the Blind Dead aka El Ataque De Los Muertos Sin Ojos ... Those things are pretty freaking cool! " [More]

"Here is my list, although it is a bit different in that the list allows only one Film from each of the 31 years, which believe me, limits the choices; for instance 1986: The FlyFrom BeyondHenry: Portrait of a Serial KillerThe HitcherInvaders from MarsManhunterNomadsVamp1987 is just as hardI am working on another one, which is just my 31 favorites regardless of how many a year. These choices listed, fit my definition of horror. They are horrifying and extremely unsettling, but may not be, in the strictest sense, horror. but well, here it is. Oh, I also did not not include the Alien films which although 'monster goes boo!', even though I love every one of them, fall somewhere in the realm of Science Fiction to me...enough gibberish, here it is:By the way, I want 'Mommie Dearest' to be No. 1, but that is another story.Years 1976 through 2007 ( the Spout year listings are a bit different than Wikipedia's which I used ) 31. 1984 A Nightmare on ... "SUNSHINE is one of those films that had me hooked for most of its length, but then during the last act almost completely lost me; although not entirely in this case, thankfully. I was slightly disappointed that Danny Boyle, the director the film (also TRAINSPOTTING and 28 DAYS LATER), went for the conventional mainstream plot devices that he threw into the last act of film. I won’t say what they were… you’ll just have to see the film, and we can talk about it afterwards if anyone wants to… but anyway… I really liked the film overall – it’s one of those apocalyptic, end of the world scenarios that we’re presented with: in a nutshell, the sun is dying, and world governments assemble a team of scientists and astronauts to go on what is essentially on a suicide mission, into space, in a ship armed with a nuclear weapon meant to be launched into the sun’s core, where it will explode and reignite the sun… a scenario which we ... Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland (and Boyle's longtime collaborator, producer Andrew Macdonald) bounce back from the relatively big-budget debacle of The Beach with 28 Days Later, a kinetic low-budget horror film. The filmmakers gratefully acknowledge their debt to a bunch of classic horror and science fiction movies, especially George Romero's Living Dead films. There's even a kickass black woman (Naomie Harris) who saves the hero's neck like in The Omega Man. But 28 Days Later has its own style. Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (The Celebration) uses digital video surprisingly effectively, adding to the film's gritty immediacy, with a few nice surreal touches (e.g. the painted flowers along the road) thrown in. The dark inflections of John Murphy's bass-driven score help moves things along, too. The story is simple and lends itself to allegorical readings, with its somewhat pro forma anti-authoritarian slant. There are a few nicely played shocks, and some amazing, haunting images of a deserted, "Rage"-ravaged London. The recently comatose main character, Jim (Cillian Murphy), begins as a cipher, but gradually comes into focus thanks to Murphy's soulful performance, and his chemistry with the fierce Harris. Brendan Gleeson (Gangs of New York) maintains his excellent track record as a lovably gruff father vainly trying to keep some sense of normalcy in his young daughter's life. Things get a little ham-fisted in the last third of the film, bogging down a bit when the ragtag group reaches a military outpost in northern England and predictably finds something even worse than the diseased lunatics they're fleeing. But for the most part, 28 Days Later is a good, scary horror film, and a worthy successor to the forebears it references in nearly every frame. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
