Created by Joss Whedon (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Firefly was an "outer-space Western" set some four to five centuries in the future. Nathan Fillion starred as Captain Mal Reynolds, a disillusioned interplanetary-war veteran and outlaw of the Alliance, the current ruling government. Reynolds was skipper of the transport ship Serenity, a "Firefly-class" vessel. The cast of characters included Inara (Morena Baccarin), a doctor named Simon (Sean Maher), and a mystical preacher named Book (Ron Glass). Firefly made its American network debut on September 20, 2002, on Fox; it was cancelled after only 12 episodes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Director: Shawn KuUS, 22 minutes, colorCinema 4 Rating: 5Despite a title sure to be at least partially tempting to any horror nut, Pretty Dead Girl: A Musical Necromance turns out to be rather tame. And if you could get the subject of necrophilia past the initial tsk-tsking of your grandma, there is a good chance that she would end up at film’s end thinking the movie was rather sad and sweet, and would hardly take offense at all to what is being suggested by its potentially creepy premise " [More]

"Behold the latest episode of The Dr. Steel Show, about an evil doctor bent on taking over the world. Sound familiar? Apparently it’s been ripped off by the new Joss Whedon project, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which Karina commented on yesterday. And as early as Adam’s praise last week when Whedon’s series launched, SpoutBlog has been receiving comments from followers (known as the Army of Toy Soldiers) of the allegedly real-life Dr. Steel. Every other online acknowledgment of Whedon’s proj " [More]

"Choices, choices. Download the three-part web series Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog over the next few days, or wait for the DVD release? Maybe both. Dr. Horrible is Joss “man with the Midas touch” Whedon’s experimental comedy/sci-fi musical. If the trailer above doesn’t lie, the whole shoestring production will shine like B-grade gold. The story: Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser, MD) is Dr. Horrible, too shy to talk to his crush (Felicia Day from The Guild) and struggling to prove himself to " [More]

"It's amazing how a cast can instantly make us fans of a movie. If I had nine bucks, I would fork it over to see these two remakes of Raiders: Second Place to dansinch for imagining a cult classic that never was. I'm a big fan of Raiders and Big Trouble in Little China, but I think I like this movie more than either of those: John Carpenter's Raiders of the Lost Ark [SkyPilot's notes in brackets] Kurt Russell &nbs " [More]

"I definitely was more than annoyed the first time I watched Serenity. The pseudo-futuristic amalgam language that's used and never explained (yeah, ok, it's mostly just cuss words but still), the references to other characters and places and events that are never shown or explained in the film, and just the weird Western-like nature of it. I had never watched Firefly and knew virtually nothing about the show. When watching it, I was so distracted by it all that I couldn't really focus on w " [More]

"While I'm thinking of titles to toss out for discussion - I'd have a hard time coming up with a Top 5, although Once Upon a Time in the West is also my favorite, and I would make the case for McCabe and Mrs. Miller (as implied by one of my previous comments) - I'd like to suggest High Noon (1952; another candidate for my 5 were I to come up with a real one). It's an artfully made film, thoughtfully photographed, and with one of the best uses of a single, simple musical the " [More]
