Directed by Bernhard Sinkel.
Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning American author Ernest Hemingway (Stacy Keach) begins his family and career in Europe, survives combat and marriages, struggles with a ragingly out of control lifestyle, and returns to Idaho where, at age 61 and with his best writing behind him, takes his life. He leaves behind a legacy of great literature and a great legend. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

lost interest.
Produced in Germany in 1988, Stacy Keach as Hemingway bears all the hallmarks of a late 1980s television miniseries: It moves at a glacier pace, is acted as if by wooden marionettes and plods from point A to point B with little style or grace. The film attempts to be definitive by not leaving out any known detail of "Papa," but in the process looses dramatic locomotion and momentum. Stacy Keach brings a respectful, brooding sincerity to Hemingway the man, but he's too respectful to sully a reputation that Hemingway himself dashed against dangerous rocks time and again. In the main, there is never a sense of the energy or larger-than-life aspects of the legendary writer: He's played more as Hamlet than Hemingway. If you don't choke this one down in one night, chances are you'll never be in the mood to get through the remainder of the 300 minutes. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide
