Directed by George Miller.
This stunning, post-apocalyptic action thriller from director George Miller stars Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky, a policeman in the near future who is tired of his job. Since the apocalypse, the lengthy, desolate stretches of highway in the Australian outback have become bloodstained battlegrounds. Max has seen too many innocents and fellow officers murdered by the bomb's savage offspring, bestial marauding bikers for whom killing, rape, and looting is a way of life. He just wants to retire and spend time with his wife and son but lets his boss talk him into taking a peaceful vacation and he starts to reconsider. Then his world is shattered as a gang led by the evil Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) murders his family in retaliation for the death of one of its members. Dead inside, Max straps on his helmet and climbs into a souped-up V8 racing machine to seek his bloody revenge. Despite an obviously low budget and a plot reminiscent of many spaghetti Westerns, Mad Max is tremendously exciting, thanks to some of the most spectacular road stunts ever put on film. Cinematographer David Eggby and stunt coordinator Grant Page did some of their best work under Miller's direction and crafted a gritty, gripping thrill ride which spawned two sequels, numerous imitations, and made Mel Gibson an international star. One sequence, in which a man is chained to a car and must cut off a limb before the machine explodes is one of the most tense scenes of the decade. The American version dubbed all the voices -- including Gibson's -- in a particularly cartoonish manner. Trivia buffs should note that Max's car is a 1973 Ford Falcon GT Coupe with a 300 bhp 351C V8 engine, customized with the front end of a Ford Fairmont and other modifications. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

"So many fun little features to choose from, where ever shall I begin? Undeniably the best (or just the most pervasive) films about living in a post-apocalyptic society are: Battle Royale The Matrix Mad Max, The Road Warrior & Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome 12 Monkeys & La Jetee Delicatessen & The City of Lost Children Those straddling the line with extreme lovers and haters: Reign of Fire Tank Girl The Omega Man I Am Legend The Day After Tomorrow Waterworld Akira Doomsday Southland Tales The Matrix Reloaded & The Matrix Revolutions And those that have been cast into the gallows of film history: Titan A.E. Aeon Flux (the movie, not the television series) The Postman Teenage Caveman Battlefield Earth Lastly, Wall-E, which is apparently the best movie ever. I haven't had a chance to see it yet. And The Road, which has yet to come out yet, but after having read the book I am utterly certain the film will be incredible. " [More]

"Mad Max 2: The Road WarriorI used to say that this was probably the best pure action movie I had seen. However after seeing Lone Wolf and Cub 2: Baby Cart at the River Styx not too long ago, I think that movie has taken over that title. I would say both of these movies are just great pure action movies though. This is pretty different from the original Mad Max which was almost in another genre. That one is much more drama based. In The Road Warrior you get a great setting, lively exaggerated characters, and the best chase scene with some wild vehicles and fun crashes.EnjoyRating: 9/10 " [More]

"We meet Max, a cop in the future where motorcycle gangs run rampant across the country side. The most gangish and rampant of these gangs is headed by a man known as Toecutter. The movie in the end has a really simple story; Toecutter kills Max's friends and family and so Max has to chase him down and kill him which he does. That is like one of the shortest summaries of a movie I think I have ever seen. That does not make this one bad. We have an action packed adventure with great characters and bad ass pyrotechnics. That is pretty easy to like. But this movie actualy gives more than what we see at first glance. But below that there is allot more to the movie and allot more important and interesting things. This movie came out in 1979. And we see something that was just beginning to take force, a new way of seeing the future or at least the first time anyone had seen this on film. What I am talking about here is the distopia. A distopia is as you may know or have guessed is the op ... " [More]

"The original Star Wars / Empire Strikes Back / Return of the Jedi will always be the best for me, but I would have to agree that Back to the Future is near perfect as well.I don't know if I would actually call Sergio Leone's and Clint Eastwood's "man with no name trilogy" a real trilogy since it just sort of uses the same character but wasn't really intended to be a trilogy from what I know. But they are great movies. The Mad Max trilogy is kind of fun too. With my favorite being Road Warrior, then Beyond the Thunderdome, then the original.Heh there are actually a couple movies that I have seen that are part of a trilogy and they are really good, but I haven't seen the rest of the movies in the trilogy. As for Dogville, I don't think the last movie has been made yet. However with the Three Colors Trilogy, I have seen Red, and it's so good I don't know why I haven't seen Blue and White yet. There are a few that I eally want to see but are hard to ge ... "interesting topic, I must admit I like a lot of films with higher budgets but here is my top 5 without spending too much time looking up the numbers- 1. 12 Angry Men - $350,000 in 1957, about $ 5.6 mil. in today's dollars according to your rules. This is one of my favorite films. Yeah, the setting is a couple of rooms, but the direction is taut and wow, what a cast!2. Mad Max - est. $350,00 in 1979, about $ 2.8 mil. Amazing low budget film. They got a steal with an unknown Mel Gibson, but it's pretty gutsy to make a futuristic movie with this scale.3. City of God - This movie looks like it was made with $ 50 mil. thanks to the direction and cinematography, but can you believe it only cost Miramax $ 3.3 mil. ?4. Donnie Darko - This is another one that looks like it cost a lot, but it was made with $ 4.5 mil. and I loved it 5. Reservoir Dogs - I know it's hip to trash Tarantino as just a hip poser, but he made an outstanding debut for $ 1.2 millionin 1992. Big budgets, sm ... " [More]

"Double it up by reading Richard Morgan's; Market Forces (fiction ) along with Confessions...Market Forces takes it to the future and combines somewhat of a Mad Max / Death Race 2000 road rage feel along with economic manipulation, but I thought the 2 worked really well together; and maybe even combine those 2 with Chalmers Johnson's; The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic...on second thought...it is really grim reading maybe stick to Basho's Haiku. Though not as polished and fascinating as its sequel, Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior), Mad Max features some of the most impressive and intense action sequences ever filmed. The first effort from writer/director George Miller, the film is reminiscent of a low-budget road movie in the style of Roger Corman. It was Mel Gibson's second film, and his Max is a vengeful loner anti-hero out of a Western. Instead of the yet-to-be-tamed Old West, however, the setting is an eerily barren world vaguely of our own time. And the horses have been replaced by roaring, menacing cars and motorcycles. The movie's weird characters and tawdry atmosphere, though, suggest something more culty, perhaps a post-apocalyptic Japanese anime film. Unlike such mainstream sci-fi films of its day as Star Wars or Alien, Mad Max has a homespun quality. At the time of its release in the United States, Mad Max hardly made a splash, and it wasn't until Mad Max 2's release that the film was recognized in America. However, it was very popular in its native Australia and elsewhere around the world. ~ Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide
