"This movie one needs to have a couple of beers before it starts. As the movie progresses then add a couple more. That is what I should have done before I started to watch the Adam Sandler character that is tormented by his sisters. Not to mention whatever is going on in his head. The only solution to the movie is like I have stated is to watch it while getting a buzz and keeping a buzz while enjoying the beer, oh and not to mention the movie. From the beginning when he is asking about the frequent flyer miles on American Airlines and getting his Healthy Choice food it just seemed as though the two companies paid for the entire production. Barry Egan is Sandler's character’s name as he somehow falls in love with Lena. She is right up there with Barry missing a few cards from the deck. Between both of them you might be able to get a full deck, " [More]

"This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown round #2”. Read more about that here.Hard EightP.T. Anderson's Magnolia and a Punch-Drunk Love are two of my favorite movies. I also think Boogie Nights is a very good movie, although it doesn't affect me as profoundly as those other two. I just watched Hard Eight, and have yet to see There Will Be Blood. So far my feeling is that each of Anderson's movies have been subsequently better. Hard Eight is a solid movie with good characters and good use of a style that would come to be perfected. Boogie Nights may just not appeal to me as much because I can't get entirely invested into the world of the pornography industry. But it is still well done. Magnolia is simply perfect, and Punch-Drunk Love is somehow even better in it's own way. Due to this trend in my personal enjoyment of his movies and the " [More]

"Where to start. Well, first, a note about the director. Paul Thomas Anderson, in his third feature film, seems to be developing a penchant for the odd and random. But then, when your full length film debut is a pic about porn, where do you really go from there? Well, one option might be an over-the-top artsy film featuring a huge ensemble cast, more plotlines than the average moviegoer is willing to tolerate, and frogs falling from the sky. For his third film, Anderson made a character study, if you will. Punch Drunk Love is a journey into the psyche of Adam Sandler. It’s got all of the elements from Sandler’s best known films, but taken from a more realistic perspective. Unlike most Adam Sandler films, this one is set in a bit more realistic world, where crude behavior and rage blackouts are not considered to be acceptable behavior. Sure, the characters in the movie are caricatures of your average human being, but their behavior is not presented as a picture of ... " [More]

"UPDATE: A story published in Saturday’s print edition of the New York Times has some additional information on Jeremy Blake’s disappearance and Theresa Duncan’s death. The story says a note referring to Duncan was found with Blake’s passport on Rockaway Beach. NYPD scuba teams have searched for but have not yet found a body. Rumors are swirling that artist Jeremy Blake has gone missing, a week after his girlfriend, filmmaker/blogger Theresa Duncan, committed suicide. Kate Coe alerted me to the news, which she’s rounded up from several sources at FishbowlLA. Duncan, a former videogame creator, was known in the blogosphere for her sometimes eccentric but often fascinating ruminations on art, imagery, culture and perfume. Her blog The Wit of the Staircase had its second anniversary on July 4th; she last updated July 10. She was apparently in New York, directing an adaptation of a Francesca Lia Block novel for Fox Searchlight. There is no IMDB entry for the film, or for Duncan; I don’t ... " [More]

"The gay marriage debate seems to have been relegated to the back-burner of late (apparently, there’s a war going on). Could Adam Sandler help bring it back? At AfterElton.com [via GreenCine Daily] Alonso Duralde says I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry “will probably do more for the national debate on gay marriage than every book written by conservative gay writer Andrew Sullivan and every letter you’ve sent to your senator put together.” He goes on to explain that this is mostly because “average” Americans are apparently willing to pay money to see Adam Sandler do just about anything, regardless of whether or not the themes of his films jibe with their personal preferences or political beliefs. It seems like a valid point, even if Paul Thomas Anderson might disagree. But at the Village Voice, Nathan Lee has much more fun nailing Chuck and Larry’s potential power; the o " [More]

"Finding ,as i do ,most of Adam Sandler's "output, totally unfunny...i would say that this is undoubtedly his BEST so far... The character seems to have anger issues, possibly an "Aspergers syndrome" sufferer?..bi-polar obessive compulsion,or whatever we are calling getting a bit nutty these days, seems to come into it,especially concerning Harmoniums. Emily Watson ,knowing her only for the infuriating "Breaking the Waves",seems inexplicably transformed into one of the SEXIEST women on the planet . Mary Lynn Rjaskub, i've loved her in everything from "The Larry Sanders Show" to "24" is wonderful,as one of the many sisters.."Barry,your sister's on line one..." Philip Seymour Hoffman,is someone else who is never less than tremendous, and has gone from strength to strength..As far as "PDL" goes "That's that.." This is a triumph of quirky ,darkly comic, yet romantic film making... Director P.T.Anderson is ,of course, about to be lauded for his latest ... " [More]

"Well, I’m back from my glamorous and exciting vacation. I have too many RSS feeds to catch up on to bore you with details, but suffice it to say, my Thanksgiving adventures looked a lot like the above scene from Punch-Drunk Love, except I fortunately managed to make an escape before damaging any property. I want to thank Pamela Cohn and Chris Campbell for filling in while I was gone; if you missed their posts, you can check out Pamela’s here and Chris’ here. Originally posted on:SpoutBlog " [More]

"In my opinion, Adam Sandler sould stick strickly to the "immature" comedy roles everyone loves seeing him in. When that's what we're used to seeing, that's what we expect. This is why "Punch Drunk Love" doesn't appeal to many Adam Sandler fans. I know that this means we're not leaving him any room to progress in his roles, but when it was such a dramatic change you have to have an extremely open mind. At least his movie "Click" was still funny, and it did have some more serious points as well. " [More]

The news of Duncan's suicide and Blake's disappearance stems from this perfume message board, which was then picked up by L.A. Observed. Blake, in apparent reaction to Duncan's death, disappeare ...
