Directed by Rob Bowman.
Medieval fantasy meets futuristic science fiction in this effects-heavy action epic from former X-Files director Rob Bowman. In present-day London, 12-year-old Quinn Abercromby witnesses the awakening of a hibernating dragon from a centuries-long slumber, the result of a construction dig supervised by his mother and an incident for which Quinn feels partially responsible. Twenty years later, the adult Quinn (Christian Bale) is the fire chief of a refortified castle community, responsible for dousing the blazes lit by the dragon's prodigious number of flame-spewing offspring, airborne juggernauts that have wreaked havoc across the globe, torching civilization and turning humans into an endangered species. Hope arrives in the form of Denton "Dragon Slayer" Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey), an American known to be the only man to ever kill one of the dragons, and Alex (Izabella Scorupco), a scientist/pilot who's a member of Van Zan's army, a zealous fighting force that includes a secret weapon: the Archangels, paratroopers using themselves as bait to attract and then dispatch the deadly beasts. Reign of Fire (2002) co-stars Gerard Butler, Alice Krige, and Alexander Siddig. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"
12 Monkeys & La Jetee Delicatessen & The City of Lost Children Those straddling the line with extreme lovers and haters: Reign of Fire Tank Girl
I was wondering if anyone would bring up Tank Girl. I thought I may have been the only one that liked it. As For La Jetee, I think I've seen it. Is it told entirely through still shots. I really can't remember if I liked it or not or if I maybe just saw part of it on the special features or 12 monkeys. " [More]

"So many fun little features to choose from, where ever shall I begin? Undeniably the best (or just the most pervasive) films about living in a post-apocalyptic society are: Battle Royale The Matrix Mad Max, The Road Warrior & Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome 12 Monkeys & La Jetee Delicatessen & The City of Lost Children Those straddling the line with extreme lovers and haters: Reign of Fire Tank Girl The Omega Man I Am Legend The Day After Tomorrow Waterworld Akira Doomsday Southland Tales The Matrix Reloaded & The Matrix Revolutions And those that have been cast into the gallows of film history: Titan A.E. Aeon Flux (the movie, not the television series) The Postman Teenage Caveman Battlefield Earth Lastly, Wall-E, which is apparently the best movie ever. I haven't had a chance to see it yet. And The Road, which has yet to come out yet, but after having read the book I am utterly certain the film will be incredible. " [More]

"
I thought the third one rocked. I hope the fourth will be a kickass little B-movie too. Hey, it can't be worse than Reign of Fire.
Lol. Reign of Fire. That movie was so bad, and yet I can't seem to stop watching it. Whenever it's on TNT it seems to be the only thing on tv worth watching, which just proves that there is nothing worth watching on tv any more. " [More]

"A few of my favorite dystopian flicks have been mentioned (Brazil, Planet of the Apes, 12 Monkeys, Soylent Green, A Clockwork Orange) but I'd also like to mention Jubilee (weird but entertaining) and Metropolis (a f**king classic in every sense of the word). I also kinda liked Reign of Fire in that "It's on the SciFi Channel and it's 2am, why not?" sort of way. Logan's Run is one of my favorite pieces of cheeseball 70s crap also. Also: Dark City, 1984 (both versions), Fahrenheit 451, RoboCop.I remembered liking Equilibrium but when I rewatched it with my wife I realize what a steaming pile it really was. Demolition Man is another example of a steaming pile of dystopian (sorta) crap. Idiocracy had a good premise but was just a bad bad bad movie all around (die Dax Shephard, die). And, of course, two of the biggest piles of crap ever: Fortress & THX 1138. " [More]

A creaky B-movie plot is given an A-list treatment in director Rob Bowman's future-primitive action flick, which delivers just enough thrills and eerie atmosphere to put it above the ranks of the usual, uninspired summer fare. Reign of Fire doesn't try to subvert or mock the conventions of the creature-feature, instead, it approaches them with just the right balance of stone-faced seriousness and levity. The dialogue is threadbare but functional, giving stars Christian Bale -- in his first big-budget action lead -- and Matthew McConaughey plenty of room for appropriate, unapologetic scenery-chewing. And what scenery it is; the real star here is Wolf Kroeger's production design, awash in orange, black, and gray, offering up one of the most vivid, lived-in post-apocalyptic landscapes since the Mad Max series. Reign of Fire's sole drawback -- and it's a big one -- is its last act, in which the tension dwindles just as it should be taking off into the stratosphere. It's here that the script fails Bowman and his game cast. Unlike James Cameron's B-masterpiece Aliens, the scattered plot points don't inform the finale in a satisfying way; instead, it's a warmed-over reenactment of Jaws, with a fire-breathing dragon standing in for a Great White. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide
