Everyone's favorite football-headed city kid graduates from television to the big screen in this animated comedy-adventure based on the Nickelodeon TV series. Arnold (voice of Spencer Klein) and his good friend, Gerald (voice of Jamil Walker Smith), live in a tight-knit neighborhood in the middle of a big city. Like most of their neighbors, Arnold and Gerald love their community, and when they learn that Scheck (voice of Paul Sorvino), a wealthy and powerful developer, plans to buy up their neighborhood, tear down the buildings, and put up a massive shopping mall in its place, they decide something has to be done. While the adults come up with a dodgy scheme to blow up the streets in their neighborhood, Arnold and Gerald hatch a more practical scheme, with the help of Helga (voice of Francesca Marie Smith), who can't decide if she likes Arnold or hates his guts. Arnold and Gerald learn that their neighborhood was designated a historical landmark years ago, but can they prove it before Scheck moves in with his bulldozers? Hey Arnold! The Movie also features the voice talents of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Christopher Lloyd, and Dan Castellaneta. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Let's pretend for a moment that movies such as Snow Dogs and The Hot Chick don't exist. The Washington City Paper tried to this year, devoting coverage to films that seemed a little more worthy, a little less my-cousin-in-law wrote-a-script-ish, and therefore spared me hours of boredom. But just as parents can't ever fully protect their kids from the bad people of the world, my editors couldn't save me from all of the bad movies of 2002. Here's an abbreviated list of bottom-scrapers that Oscar will snub for a bunch of very good reasons: Rollerball: There's a subtext of international conspiracy and a point at which things inexplicably go green--though you might assume it's just your reaction to watching two-years-running worst-of-lister Chris Klein. Big Trouble: A Get Shorty wannabe with airport bombs, a Martha Stewart-headed dog, and not a trace of Dave Barry's humor--which is odd, given that it's based on a Dave Barry novel. Slackers: High-sc ... " [More]

"Gentrification is a big issue for a football-headed fourth-grader to, uh, tackle. Yet in Hey Arnold! The Movie, the titular hero is expected to save his run-down but tightknit neighborhood from the cold bulldozer of progress while little audience members are expected to be entertained. Better luck next time, Nickelodeon. It's not only the animation that falls flat, with the TV series' simple lines looking crude on the big screen; the story also dives into political conflict almost immediately and fails to save itself, with hardly a charming character or goofy sight gag throughout. I suppose there's some commendable role-model thing going on with Arnold, given the number of times his friends comment about how he always "looks on the bright side." But does he have to be boring, too? Arnold (voiced by Spencer Klein) is the tiny adult in the household he shares with his explosives-wielding grandpa and seemingly hopped-up grandma (whose arrest and subsequent attempts to esca ...
