Directed by Michael Anderson.
In a hermetically sealed, post-apocalyptic urban environment several centuries hence, Logan 5 (Michael York) and his friend Francis 7 (Richard Jordan) lead unquestioning lives of hedonism. Entertainment comes in the form of casual sexual liaisons and gladiatorial games in which those who do not wish to undergo euthanasia at the age of 30 vie for the illusory chance of continued life. As "sandmen," Logan and Francis are charged with tracking down and killing "runners" -- those citizens who will submit to neither "renewal" (a peaceful death) nor "carousel" (a gladiatorial battle) when their time comes. When Logan grows intrigued by a beautiful young woman, Jessica 6 (Jenny Agutter), who plans to become a runner, he is forced to question the fundamental principles of his society. And when his superiors force him to pose as a runner himself to weed out Jessica's guerilla underground, Logan finds himself fleeing the city in search of a mythical place called Sanctuary where people are allowed to live out their natural spans. ~ Brian J. "I hadn't seen Logan's Run since pre-DVD era. It's not quite as entertaining as I remembered, probably for the reasons explained quite well by the All Movie Guide review below. I love sci-fi movies, but so many of them make a huge unbelievable leap setting up the current year's scenario and the viewer is just supposed to accept it.Logan's Run is set in the 23rd century. So sometime between 1976 and 2276 no human knows what a marriage or family is, what individual committment is, what purity might mean -- artificial intelligence takes care of everyone and no one asks questions. The tough sell with Logan himself is that you never can tell exactly what his motives are. He *seems* to truly side with the rebels early on but then alerts the authorities to his location. Then a minute later he seems on board with the rebels again. Because Michael York's acting is so intense and over-the-top, you feel like you should believe the obvious. He says he's with ... " [More]

"This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry.Logan's RunI just plain enjoyed this movie. Yeah there are some pretty dated special effects, but they are still enchanting. Jenny Agutter is gorgeous. And Peter Ustinov is brilliant.I really just like the story idea. I've still never read the book or seen the TV show, but I am interested now. All of the different areas of this world, the outside with the destroyed remnants of our old world, just all of the different settings were part of what made it so interesting as well.I hear there is a remake in the works and I actually really don't mind that. I think there's a whole lot that could be done with the movie. And the original movie isn't perfect by any means. I think an updated version could have a lot more or different things to say given the current state of affairs in the world. As long as they can find someone as good ... " [More]

"Former architect/advert director/David Fincher protege Joseph Kosinski has been hired to direct a remake of Logan’s Run. The script is to be written by Tim Sexton, who was nominated for an Oscar for Children of Men, and the film is expected to look more like the 1967 novel than the 1976 Michael York film. Before remaking his own King of Kong as a feature for New Line, Seth Gordon will direct Four Christmases, a Vince Vaughn/Reese Witherspoon comedy that the studio is rushing into production in order to secure a December 2008 tentpole in case of a strike. Sony Pictures Classics has bought a documentary about Jimmy Carter, titled Jimmy Carter: Man From Plains, and directed by Jonathan Demme. The film, which was produced by Jeff Skoll’s Participant Productions, will open at the Venice Film Festival before screening at Toronto. Originally posted on:Spoutblog " [More]

"A few of my favorite dystopian flicks have been mentioned (Brazil, Planet of the Apes, 12 Monkeys, Soylent Green, A Clockwork Orange) but I'd also like to mention Jubilee (weird but entertaining) and Metropolis (a f**king classic in every sense of the word). I also kinda liked Reign of Fire in that "It's on the SciFi Channel and it's 2am, why not?" sort of way. Logan's Run is one of my favorite pieces of cheeseball 70s crap also. Also: Dark City, 1984 (both versions), Fahrenheit 451, RoboCop.I remembered liking Equilibrium but when I rewatched it with my wife I realize what a steaming pile it really was. Demolition Man is another example of a steaming pile of dystopian (sorta) crap. Idiocracy had a good premise but was just a bad bad bad movie all around (die Dax Shephard, die). And, of course, two of the biggest piles of crap ever: Fortress & THX 1138. " [More]

"Here’s the dilemma. I have a list of well over three thousand movies I want to see saved on IMDB. I have a subscription to Netflix and recently every time I return a DVD it has been an extremely arduous task to make the decision as to which movie I should see next. In an effort to narrow down my choices and make the process of choosing slightly less overwhelming I have devised a system, almost a bit of a game for me. Here’s how it goes. For my first film selection, I have narrowed the options down to only films that were released in the year 2006. Then after I have watched that movie, my next selection would have to be a film released in 2005. Then I would see a film from 2004, then 2003, etc. The process of deciding is still laborious, but actually quite a bit more exciting. (I'm going by IMDB as my source for release years)I have already been making a list and have also already begun watching the films. I decided this might be a good time to start fooling ... " [More]

"THE DOT-MATRIX (1970)During the week, young Tom Anderson (Robert Redford) is a Mathematicion for a "research" company (cover up agency for the CIA) located in a desert airplane hanger. On weekends he's a motorcyclist. Tom runs out of gas one night along a desert stretch of highway and stumbles into a Native American sweat lodge where he meets "The Chief" (Iron-Eyes Cody). After ingesting an ancient herbal tea, The Chief takes Tom on a hallucinogenic journey where he discovers that a super-computer is feeding the thoughts of every American to them. Each human's thoughts are recorded on to a unique dot-matrix card filed away in an underground bunker. The Chief trains Tom in the ways of "seeing" and gives him a new name, Nubian. Although Nubian's mind is freed by the herbal tea, its effects will only last for 48 hours before he forgets his name and his thoughts are taken over again by the super-computer. So Nubian heads out to find the underground bunker and burn his dot-matrix card, b ... " [More]

"Logan's Run i watched Ewan McGregor in "The Island" a few days ago and I kept having thoughts of how it was basically a remake of Logan's Run. so I had to break out the classics. I forgot how much i really enjoyed this movie. Peter York was a perfect fit for the role. The special effects were pretty low-budget; everytime they would shoot at the runner it always made a spark at their feet. i guess in the future nobody is taught how to aim. it reminded me of the old bugs bunny cartoons where yosemite would shoot at the feet and yell "dance ya varmint". Aside from that, I loved the theme of the movie.who can forget the creepy "renewal ceremony" masks? " [More]

is neutral about it.
Taking its basic premise and characters' names but little substance from the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, Logan's Run appeared in the mid-'70s, after the grim sci-fi explorations of Stanley Kubrick, but before the populist success of George Lucas. Falling artistically as well as chronologically between those two directors' works, the film explores interesting sociological issues with more slickness than depth. As with many science fiction films, too much effort is spent explicating the scenario and too little is spent truly exploring the issues of morality and mortality inherent within. Brooding blond hunk Michael York plays the morally ambiguous protagonist with scowling proficiency, but fellow marquee name Farrah Fawcett manages to cram more wretched acting and non-sequiter facial expressions into a brief cameo than most actresses could fit into a leading role. The action sequences involving York's and Jenny Agutter's characters as they flee the city prove gripping and well-directed even though the final act collapses under the weight of its own silliness. Still, the what-if premise of Logan's Run proved resonant enough that it spawned a short-lived TV series the following year. Stylish production design offsets special effects so dated that you can practically smell the mothballs when the film receives contemporary screenings. Compare this with David Cronenberg's contemporaneous Shivers for a more nuanced extrapolation of '70s decadence. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
