Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
The director of Mortal Kombat (1995) adapts another popular video game for the big screen with this gory action thriller. Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez star as Alice and Rain, two members of a commando team assigned to infiltrate the Hive, an underground research laboratory owned by the faceless conglomerate known as the Umbrella Corporation. A bio-engineered virus has been released into the maze-like Hive, turning the facility's employees into mindless, flesh-eating zombies. A single scratch or bite from one of these rampaging ghouls dooms its victim, so the commandos have their work cut out for them as they attempt to reach the Red Queen, the lab's supercomputer -- and their sole hope of halting the spread of the contagion. Before they can complete their mission, however, the soldiers must overcome a variety of deadly obstacles, including mutant dogs, lasers, and a genetically altered beast known as The Licker, whose strength increases with every victim it slays. Alice and Rain also discover that the release of the virus may not have been an accident, and that a cure may exist somewhere in the deadly Hive. Resident Evil co-stars Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"Discussion of this summer’s heroine lack is in full throttle. Last friday, New York’s Vulture blog asked, “Where are the Roles for Superwomen?; Stu at Defamer jumped off from there, ultimately suggesting an X-Men spin-off for Ellen Page; John at The Movie Blog listed reasons “Why Most Female Lead Action Films Don’t Succeed” (shocker: men can’t identify with or believe in strong — and strong — female characters). Now, adding to the conversation in the least noble way possible, USA Weekend presents the appropriately titled “Girls Want to Have Fun, Too”, a cover story (with the least flattering photos I’ve ever seen) from its summer movie preview that spotlights Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Liv Tyler as the “leading ladies” of the season’s three big comic book adaptations. Of course, each of these three actresses are only secondary figures to their superhero counterparts (in Iron Man, The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk, respectively). But that’s not the worst of it: the ... " [More]

"Okay so I know that this is probably a stupid thread but I'm going to do it anyway! I don't know about you, but I think Zombified Animals are way scary...maybe even more so than Zombified Humans. I know that there are zombie dogs in Resident Evil. And there's also a zombie dog in Night of the Creeps, though I'm not sure if this qualifies as a zombie movie or not. Oh oh! And, though I didn't much care for the movie, Resident Evil: Extinction had some zombie birds. Wouldn't that suck. Not only is Petey obnoxious and tweets nonstop but he's also dead and will bite your ankles off if he gets out of his cage...sucky. That kind of brings about a whole 'nother set of problems when thinking about the movie The Birds. Eep! " [More]

"Ever since 2002 when it first came out, I had no intention of watching Resident Evil. I'm not a gamer, it nothing about the trailer appealed to me. Then recently I saw a teaser for RE: Apocolypse and the eeriness intrigued me. So up it shot in my Blockbuster queue. For my fellow zombie fans out there, this is in a Romero-ish mold -- if you get scratched, bitten, or even partially eaten by zombies, then you will share their fate. And like Day of the Dead - who knows, maybe there's a cure. For some mysterious (and obviously sinister) reason, a group of people are exposed to a virus and communication is lost. Enter elite soldier squad and our heroine, Milla Jovovich, to neutralize any baddies and rescue any hostages. For the first few minutes, Milla is actually playing the role of Leeloo from Fifth Element. I'm not complaining, just sharing the facts. I enjoyed it. I guess I had semi-low expectations considering its videogame roots, but it was a decent action flick. ... " [More]

"Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! My bad! I had my calender on the wrong page! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... At THIS moment in my life, my top-ten list would look s ... " [More]

"I'm pretty sure this is from Resident Evil (one of Ms. Froggy's favorite movies) I'm not sure though but I seem to remember that line in there from the 50 times that I've watched it but ya never know, it is 6:30 in the morning here and I haven't had any coffee yet and I was singing until after midnight last night so, I might be TOTALLY off... "As the Amazon woman cutting off one breast to better aim her bow and arrow, so tough are the women on this girl power rock block. Their similarities beg a double feature: each of these fine ladies are the only one capable in their respective flick of stopping evil corporations from procuring or manufacturing weapons destined to wipe out the human race in the name of “security” despite their heavily armed marine type escorts, each has an equally bad ass Hispanic Lady side-kick of sorts who bites it in a rough-ass way near the end, and they both also have some pretty sweet weaponry and skills at disposal. Aliens & Resident Evil The Bitch Is Back - Aliens In Aliens, Ripley is back from deep sleep in deep space, fresh memories of the Alien alive and well, and ready to battle with creature, marine and Paul Reiser alike, while savin’ babies from the clutches of evil Alien monsters. Ripley gets talked into returning to the scary-ass planet where she first encountered the Alien, o ... " [More]

"When I watch a zombie movie i'm inevitably moved to compare it to the first zombie movie I ever watched which was (as it was for so many of us) Romero’s “Night Of The Living Dead”. When I do make the comparison I look for two points. First, does the movie have the gross out factor that I experienced when Tom and Judy became zombie barbeque and second, am I as surprised at the end as I was when Ben receives a shot in the head from a zombie hunter. On both of these levels “Resident Evil” is only mildly successful. I Like laser security system effect. Getting cross cut into a million pieces is gross on so many different levels, but having seen quite a few slice and dice movies it’s not as effective as it might be. Surprise endings aren’t a major point for this movie however. I found little wonder in Milla ending up strapped to a gurney in a hospital and all of Raccoon City fallen to the Zombie Virus. All and All I would have to rate ... " [More]
